B. W. INGLE.
SAFETY VALVE ATTACHMENT FOR LAMPS. No. 341,483. Patented Ma 11, 1886.
EEN!!!" i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA \VILLIAM INGLE, OF FORT \VORTH,,TEXA'S.
SAFETY-VALVE ATTACHMENT FOR LAMPS.
EPLGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,483, dated May 11, 1886. Applicaiion filed January 8, 1885. Serial No. 152,256. (No model.)
T 60% whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA WILLIAM INGLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort \Vorth, county of Tarrant, and State of Texas,
have invented certain new and useful Improvemenis in Safety-Valve Attachments for Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a lamp-top and burner with my improved safety-valve applied thereto; Fig. 2, a sectional view of the lamptop with the burner removed; Fig. 3, aplan 5 view of the hinged collar; and Fig. 4 a detail view in perspective of the valve.
The present invention has relation to safetyvalve attachments for lamps, to permit of the escape of any gas which may be formed in the upper part of the oil-reservoir by the eva porization of its contents; and the object thereof is to provide a simple form of valve stamped from a single piece of sheet metal, with a shank adapted to be inserted through a slot in 5 the lamp-collar and the valve afterward bent down over the valve-opening, thus presenting a valve that will be sensitive to the pressure of gas within the reservoir, and consequently insure its successful operation at all times, while the valve is capable of being produced at comparatively small cost and attached to the lamp with little trouble, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents 5 the usual lamptop provided with a screwthreaded neck for attaching it to thelampreservoir, and B represents the collar hinged to the top A, and held down thereon byasuitable fastening, a. I
The collar B has interior screw-threads for connecting thereto the usual burner, C, and is formed with a valve-opening, d, and immediately above it a slot, 0, these collars, as above described, being stamped from sheet metal, either ornamental or plain. It is the object to manufacture these collars complete, ready to attach to the top of any lamp, after which any one can apply the valve, it being simply stamped from sheet metal by suitable dies, the valve, as shown at D, having a shank, b.
In applying the valve to the collar B, all that is necessary is to insert the sheet-metal shank 1) down through the slot 0 and afterward bend the valve D down against the surface of the collar until it fits nicely over and around the valve-opening (I, thus enabling it to be quickly and conveniently attached by most any one, as no hinging thereof to the collar is required or any means of attachment that would require a skilled workman.
The valves, being cut or stamped from sheet metalcomplete and ready for attachment to the lamp, can be made in large numbers and placed in the market for the trade at a comparatively small cost, and can be applied by any one.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a lamp-collarhaving a valve-opening therein and a slot immediately above it, of a hingeless valve formed from a single piece of sheet metal, with a shank entering the slot, and the valve bent down over the opening, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EZRA \VILLIAM INGLE.
