PATENT OFFICE.
SPIRIT-LEVEL FOR BORING-BITS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,379, dated May 4, 1886.
Application filed September 22, 1885. Serial No. 177,823. (Model) .To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. GWYER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spirit- Levels for Boring Bits and other Uses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of one of my improved levels, shown as applied to a bit-brace, and with the cap removed, parts of the brace and bit being broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the level, the spiritbottle being removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the level and a side elevation of parts of a bit-brace and bit, and showing in full lines a second method ofsecuringthe level in place, and in dotted lines a third method.
The object of this invention is to provide spirit-levels for boring-bits, and other uses, constructed in such a manner as to show when the boringbits or other articles to which they are applied are in vertical positions, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient and reliable in use.
The invention consists in the construction of the various parts of the level, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then claimed.
A represents the spirit bottle, which is made circular in form, and preferably with its upper side slightly convexed, the highest point being exactly in the center of the said bottle. The spirit-bottle A is placed in a case, B, where it is secured by an annular cap, 0, screwed upon the upper part of the said case, as shown in Fig. 2, or by other suitable means.
Upon the center of the bottom of the case B is formed a screw, D, which is designed to be screwed into a screw hole in the bitbrace E, in line with the bit F, as illustrated in Fig. l. \Vith this construction, when the bit F is vertical, the air-bubble will be exactly in the center of the spirit-bottle, and theleast variation of the said bit from a vertical position will cause the air bubble to move away from the center, so that the operator can at ways know when he is boring a vertical hole.
If desired, the screw D can be omitted and the case 13 formed upon or attached to the upper end of the bar G, the lower end of the said bar having recessed projections H, to rest against the shank of the bit F, and being provided with the thumb-screws I, which screw into a short bar, J, placed upon the other side of the said bit-shank, and having recessed projections K resting against it, as shown in full lines in Fig. 3, so that the spirit-level can be secured in place by tightening the thumb screws I and can be detached by loosening the said thumb-screws; or the case B can be formed upon or attached to the end of an arm, L, so shaped as to fit upon the lower arm of the bit-brace E, and secured to the said bit-brace arm by screws M, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
I am aware that a bit-stock has been provided with a spirit-level; also, that a circular spirit-level has been heretofore. constructed, and I do not claim the same, broadly, as of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The case B,l1avinga circular recess therein open at its top, attaching device on its outer side, and a circular glass spirit-bottle fitting within the recess in the case, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the case B, of the circular glass spiritbottle fitting therein and formed with a convexed upper surface, the highest point thereof being exactly in the center of the bottle, substantially as set forth.
3. The case B, formed with a screw, 1), on its under side, in combination with the circular glass bottle A, fitting within the case, and the cover 0, screwing on the case, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the bit-stock E, having a screw-threaded aperturein theupper surface of its lower arm, in vertical alignment with the bit-socket, of the circular casing B, open at its top and provided on its bottom with screw D, and the circular glass spiritbottle A,fitting within the open case, substantially as set forth.
