Description
Nov. 19, 1968 H. WARINER GOLF SWING TRAINING DEVICE Filed Sept. 19, 1966 FIG.4
INVENTOR HENRYLWAR/Nfl? United States Patent 3,411,789 GOLF SWING TRAINING DEVICE Henry L. Wariner, 318 Highland Ave., Fayetteville, N.C. 28305 Filed Sept. 19, 1966, Ser. No. 580,348 1 Claim. (Cl. 273186) This invention relates to a simple inexpensive instructional, recreational and entertaining golf device, designed to improve the knowledge and skill, and to afford necessary exercise and entertainment for anyone choosing to use the same.
The invention relates particularly to an attachment applicable to the head of a golf club, and a mat, the attachment including a depending member of wire, or the like, with or without a bowed portion for striking the mat when the club is swung, the mat being of the magic slate type so that a mark will be made by the depending member, and the top sheet being capable of being lifted either by the fingers, or foot manipulated to raise the top sheet.
It is an object of the invention to provide an instructional, recreational, and entertaining golf device relating to a popular past time, golf, which device can be produced at relatively small cost and used in the home, in a hotel room, or other place indoors or out, as for providing entertainment, physical and mental exercise, and recreation, as well as for instruction, and muscular development and coordination.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective illustrating the use of the invention;
FIG. 2, an enlarged perspective of the marking device attached to a golf club;
FIG. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 4, a perspective of the mat; and,
FIG. 5, an enlarged section on the line 5-5 of FIG. 4.
Briefly stated, the invention is an attachment for the head of a golf club which attachment has 2. depending member of wire or the like, the lowermost portion of which is adapted to serve as a marking device and may be curved or not as preferred. A mat is provided to be marked by the depending member such mat having a tacky surface with a plastic overlying sheet commonly known as a magic slate which plastic sheet when engaged will adhere to the underlying tacky sheet and present what appears to be a mark in effect. On the top surface of the overlying sheet is a representation of a golf ball and space guide or sight lines so that when the golf club is swung to strike the imaginary golf ball or the representation of the same the depending marking member will contact the upper sheet and press it into engagement with the underlying sheet to provide a mark indicating the direction of which a golf club is swung across the mat. The mat is provided with raised ribs across which the upper or overlying sheet extends and can sag into contact with the upper surface of the mat. The upper sheet is attached to the remote edges of the base on which the sheet is carried and an operating strip is provided attached to the portion of the sheet between one of the ribs and the adjacent edge of the base so that when the strip is stepped upon lightly or manually raised, the mat will be extended and consequently raised from the base on which its carried thereby erasing the mark it has made.
With continued reference to the drawing the golf device of the present invention includes an attachment for detachable application to the head of a golf club 11. The attachment includes a spring clamp 12 by which it may be secured onto the head of a golf club.
3,411,789 Patented Nov. 19, 1968 To the attachment 10, is fastened a depending marking member of spring wire 13 or other form, having a loop 14 for the reception of a mounting bolt or pin 15. The upper portion of the spring wire 13 may have a part 16 extending at right angles to the plane of the lower end portion thereof, thus maintaining the spring wire in a definite predetermined position at all times and generally normal to the spring clamp 12 and the head of the golf club. The mounting bolt or pin 15 extends through the loop 14 of the spring wire and is received in a pair of lugs 17 struck from or otherwise joined to the attachment 10. The depending marker may be curved as illustrated, or not, as preferred.
When the golf club with the attachment thereon is swung in an arc the depending marking member 13 is adapted to leave a mark on another surface and in order to accomplish this a mat 18 is provided having an underlying base 19 the upper surface 20 of which is tacky and has overlying flexible translucent surface sheet 21 so that when a portion of the surface sheet is depressed into firm engagement with the tacky portion a line is apparent as if by magic. This mark may be readily erased by raising the surface sheet enough to separate the same from the tacky surface 20.
The underlying base member 19 may have upright ribs 22 and 23 extending a slight distance above the surface of the same. The rib 22 being spaced inwardly of the lateral edge, and the plastic sheet 21 being attached to the edge 24 and to the upright rib 23 and overlying the rib 22. A strip 25 of relatively stiff material is attached to the upper surface of the sheet 21 intermediate the edge 24 and the rib 22. The sheet is of such a length that it may normally lie flat over the tacky surface of the base 19 until such time as the strip 25 is depressed into engagement with or raised sufiiciently to separate the sheet from the tacky surface of the base 19 between the ribs 22 and 23. The plastic sheet 21 may have guide lines 26 and the representation of a golf ball thereon with the guide lines extending in the direction of the proper movement of the golf club in use.
The entire device may be contained in a relatively small package and carried in a piece of luggage and readily removed and used when desired at which time the mat 18 will be placed on the floor and the attachment 10 applied to the club head as illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2 and the club head swung as in usual manner whereupon the depending member 13 will engage the upper sheet 21 and depress it along a line producing a mark 28. This line may be scrutinized and then by depression of the strip 25 the line will be erased by raising the surface sheet 21 from contact with the underlying tacky surface 20. The attachment includes a spring clamp 12 by which it may be secured onto the head of a golf club of conventional character or may be composed of upper or lower telescopic parts as illustrated.
What is claimed is:
1. A golf practice device comprising the combination of an attachment adapted to be secured to the head of a golf club, and a mat over which the golf club can be swung, said attachment including a springy member having a portion adapted to extend below the sole of the club head when secured thereto and of a character to en gage and move along the mat when the club is swung, said mat having a flexible top sheet secured at spaced locations to a base member, a recording surface on said base member extending between said locations and above which said sheet extends, the characteristics of said recording surface being such that it will reveal a line when 3 4 the top sheet is engaged by said springy member and References Cited pressed into engagement with the recording surface, and UNITED STATES PATENTS by a separation of the top sheet from the said recording surface the line will be erased, said base member in- 1651264 11/1927 Fish 273 194 X eluding a raised elongated portion extending between 5 said s aced locations, and the ortion of said to sheet P P P P 3,152,406 10/1964 Marques 35-66 between one of said locations and said raised elongated portion bein spaced above said base member whereby a golfer by stepping on said portion of said top sheet RICHARD PINKHAM Primary Exammer' may separate said top sheet from said recording surface. 10 GEORGE I. MARLO, Assistant Examiner.
