(Cl. 249-219) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for assembling forms used in the construction of poured concrete structures. Two pieces of flat metal bent to hold wood forms are held together by a single fastener and can be disassembled after the concrete has hardened to allow removal of the concrete forms. A portion of the apparatus is designed to snap off and remain in the concrete structure.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in construction form holders, and more particularly, to form holders which are designed to be used in connection with the pouring of concrete.
It is an object of this invention to provide such a holder which is simple and efiective, yet capable of cheap construction.
It is a further object of this invention to provide such a 'holder which can be constructed of standard strap iron which further reduces the cost of fabrication.
A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevation view of the form holder in place supporting form members;
FIGURE 2 is a side elevation view of the main member of the device alone;
FIGURE 3 is a front view of the main member;
FIGURE 4 is a side elevation view of hook member; and
FIGURE 5 is a front view of said hook member.
In the preferred construction of my invention, the main member is formed from Standard strap iron in the rectangular configuration shown in FIGURES 1 and 2 so that its upper portion is adapted to hold in place a form member 19. A hole is provided in said upper portion through which a nail can be driven into the form member 19, thus holding it in place. At the lower end of the main member 10 is .a projection 13 which serves to hold the form holder away from the concrete blocks 16 for the proper distance to maintain the form holder in proper alignment.
A hook member 11 is likewise formed of strap iron, terminating at its upper end in a hook adapted to fit over the upper edge of a common concrete block 16 and into its cavity. Said hook member 11 has a hole 14 in its lower portion, adapted to receive a fastening means 12, a common nut and bolt. Said hook member 11 also incorporates an indentation 15, which acts as a snap-off point.
In operation, the form holder is applied to the top course of blocks 16 which have been laid in the customary fashion to form a foundation for a concrete deck, as in a porch, for example. The space inside the block wall is filled with sand 18. The form holder, assembled from the main member 10 and the hook member 11 by the fastening means 12 is applied to the 'block wall and wooden form members 19 placed inside the cradle formed by the upper portion of main member 10 and the block Wall. A nail is then driven through the hold in the upper portion of main member 10 into wooden form 19 to hold the form in place. The concrete 17 is then poured, forming a cap over the block wall. After the concrete hardens, the fastening means 12 is removed, releasing main member 10 and the forms 19. The lower portion of hook member 11 is then pried outwardly from the block wall, snapping off at 15. The balance of hook member 11 remains under the concrete and not normally visible. With the provision of a new hook member 11, the form holder can be re-assembled for re-use.
It is readily seen that I have provided a novel form holder which makes it possible for one person to build and level a form, whereas previous methods required the use of elaborate supports from the ground upward, as well as several persons and considerable time to level the forms. This form holder automatically levels the form members with the top of the concrete block wall.
It is apparent that I have provided a simple yet efficient form holder, and it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the form, detail and proportion of parts without departing from the scope of my invention as claimed in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A construction form holder comprising a main member, a hook member, and detachable fastening means for holding the two together, said main member comprising an upper portion with a hole therein and extending in an upward vertical position, a middle portion continuous with said upper portion and ninety degrees thereto, and a lower portion continuous with said middle portion and extending downwardly therefrom and ninety degrees thereto and incorporating an inwardly extending spacing projection ninety degrees to said lower portion, said hook member comprising a generally flat structure terminating at its upper extremity in an inwardly projecting U shaped hook adapted to engage a hollow concrete block.
2. The device as claimed in claim 1 wherein said hook member incorporates a transverse indentation across its lower portion.
