(Cl. 49-62) ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE A main sash is mounted in a frame and has end connected rails and stiles receiving a pane in a pane opening thereof. The rails and stiles ha-ve lengthwise bores therein in a common plane parallel to and spaced normal to the plane of the pane, and also channels from said bores opening toward said pane opening in said parallel, spaced plane. Fasteneres are received in said bores securing said rails and stiles together, and latch plates of a storm sash in said pane opening are received in said channels and bores.
Background of the invention This invention relates to a closure with improved storm sash fastening incorporated therein and, more particularly, to a closure of the type having a main sash having a storm sash removably secured thereto and covering the pane of said main sash wherein the fastening between said main and storm sash is of an improved form permitting a greater range of glass thicknesses in the main sash.
The invention of the present application is an improvement on the closure disclosed and claimed in U.S. Letters Patent No. 3,208,111, granted Sept. 28, 1965, and entitled, Closure With Longitudinally Movable Sash. As disclosed in Letters Patent No. 3,208,111, the form of closure herein involved includes a frame mounting one or more mian sash. Where two main sash are included in said closure, one of said sash may be an outer stationary sash and the other of said sash may be an inner, longitudinally movable sash, but in any event, each of said main sash will include a storm sash removably secured to and covering the pane of said main sash.
In the closure of the aforesaid patent, the rails and stiles of the main sash are formed with bores lengthwise therethrough for receiving fasteners secured therein and end connecting said rails and stiles in the required rectangular configuration. Said rail and stile bores extend in a plane parallel to, but spaced transversely from, the sash pane. Furthermore, storm sash fastening channels are formed in said rails and stiles separate from said bores in a plane parallel to, but spaced transversely from, said sash pane a distance greater than the plane of said bores, said storm sash fastening channels opening inwardly toward said pane.
Thus', the storm sash is received within the main sash for removable securement therewith and has a resilient gasket for abutting and sealing against the main sash pane. A plurality of pivotal latch blades are mounted on the storm sash for selective engagement in the main sash fastening channels, thereby securing the storm sash to the main sash.
By combining in the present construction the functions of the latch and sash fastener receiving bores and channels, the extrusions constituting the sash have been reduced in weight. Furthermore, a greater range of glass thickness is receivable in the sash without increasing the transverse cross-sectional dimensions of the sash.
Objects and summary of the invention It is, therefore, an object of my invention to provide a closure with improved storm sash fastening incorporated therein whereby the transverse dimensions required for Patented Nov. 19, 1968 ice the storm sash fastening in the main sash are reduced to thereby reduce the material of the main sash and permit a greater range of main sash glass thicknesses. According to the present invention, the storm sash fastening channels of the rails and Stiles are formed in the same plane and opening into the rail and stile fastening bores so that the main sash may be formed for receiving glass of greater transverse thickness without increasing the overall transverse thickness of the main sash.
It is another object of my invention to provide a closure with improved storm sash fastening incorporated therein whereby not only is a reduction in main sash material and permissible increase in glass thickness obtained, but the storm sash may be removably received in and Secured to the main sash in virtually the identical manner heretofore provided. The storm sash is, therefore, provided with the same form of pivotal latch blades selectively received in the main sash fastening channels to secure the storm sash with the main sash.

Description ofthey best embodiment contemplated As hereinbefore stated, the closure with the improved storm sash fastening incorporated therein of the present invention constitutes an improvement in the closure construction set forth in the prior Patent No. 3,208,111, said improved storm sash fastening being incorporated in said prior construction. For this reason, the details of the overall closure are only briefly described herein t0 the extent necessary to understand the overall working relationship between the frame, the stationary sash and the longitudinally movable sash, with said prior patent being referred to for a more complete description of said closure. There are certain structural changes in the closure and sash shown herein from those of said prior patent which are not of importance to the improvements of the present invention, but the overall construction an operation of the closure shown herein will be clear from a complete understanding of said prior patent.
Referring to the drawing hereof, a closure, generally indicated at 10, is generally rectangular in inward and outward appearance and includes a frame 12 having a header 14, a sill 16 and longitudinally spaced, side jarnbs 1S, said jambs maintaining the header and sill in operative and spaced relationship in the usual manner. Furthermore, the header, sill and jambs 14, 16 and 18 co-operate to forwardly and rearwardly divide the frame 12 into a pair of upper tracks 20 and 22, a pair of lower tracks 24 and 26 and preferably pairs of side channels 28 and 30 on each of the jambs 18.
Viewing the closure 10 from the inner side, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 4, the lower side of FIG. 2 and the righthand side of FIG. 3, a stationary outer sash 32 is mounted in said frame within the upper and lower tracks 20 and 24 and within the side channel 28 extending longitudinally of said frame and being Secured intermediate thereof by a tie bar 34. The stationary outer sash 32 includes upper and lower rails 36 and 38 maintained in operative and spaced relationship by longitudinally spaced Stiles 40 and 42, said rails and Stiles appropriately enclosing a glass pane 44. The stile 42 intermediate the frame 12 is secured in the tie bar 34.
A longitudinally movable inner sash 46 is received at the right-hand side of the frame 12, as viewed in FIGS. v1 and 2, within the upper and lower tracks 22 and 26 and is normally also received in the right-hand side channel 30 when said movable inner sash is in closed position, as shown. The movable inner sash 46 includes a glass pane 48 appropriately enclosed by upper and lower rails 50 and 52, a stile normally at the jamb 18 and a stile 56 normally intermediate the frame 12 and preferably inwardly overlying and covering the mating stile 42 of the stationary outer sash 32. The movable inner sash 46 is mounted in the frame lower track 26 for longitudinal movement relative to said frame and said stationary outer sash 32 by means of a carriage 58 supported on appropriate rollers 60, again more clearly described in said prior patent, No. 3,208,111.
A resilient bumper 62 may be mounted on the frame jamb 18 within the channel 30 for abutment by the stile 54 of the movable inner sash 46 when said sash is moved longitudinally of the frame into fully closed position, as shown in FIG. 2. In addition, the stiles 40 and 56 may be provided with appropriate flanges 64 and 66 projecting from said stiles inward of the frame 12 for hand engagement in order to move the movable inner sash 46 in the direction toward its fully closed position. Furthermore, a spring biased bolt 68 of a latch 70 mounted on the stile 56 is adapted for engagement in a keeper 72 of the stile 42 on the stationary outer sash 32 for locking said movable inner sash 46 in said fully closed position.
More particularly to the improvements of the present invention, each of the rails 36 and 38 and the Stiles 40 and 42 of the stationary outer sash 32, and each of the rails S and 52 and the Stiles 54 and 56 of the movable inner sash 46 is formed with a circular cross section bore 74 extending lengthwise and the total length thereof. Said bore 74 extends in a plane parallel to, but spaced transversely inwardly of the glass panes 44 and 48 of said sash. Thus, the various rails and stiles may be secured end connected perimetrically defining the rectangular openings closed by said glass panes 44 and 48 by fastening screws 76 received through certain of said rails and Stiles and secured in the bores 74 of the adjacent of said rails and Stiles in the manner shown in FIG. 4 wherein a fastening screw is received through the stile 40 and into the bore 74 in the lower rail 38 of the Stationary outer sash 32.
Also, a Storm sash fastening channel or slot 78 is formed in each of said rails and Stiles lengthwise thereof opening into said `bores 74 and inwardly toward said sash openings or the glass panes 44 and 48. Said storm sash fastening channels 78 extend in the same described plane as the extension of the bores 74, that is, spaced transversely inwardly of the glass panes 44 and 48. Thus, the storm sash fastening channels 78 are positioned in the same plane as the sash bores 74 for fastening together the sash rails and Stiles by the fastening screws 76, rather than said bores and channels extending in separate transversely spaced planes, as in the closure construction of Said Patent No. 3,208,111, as hereinbefore described.
It is preferred that all of the sash, rails and Stiles will be formed as metal extrusions, preferably aluminum, as are many of the other components of the closure 10. All of the rails 36, 38, 50 and 52 of the stationary outer and movable inner sashes 32 and 46 are identical cross section, S0 may be formed of the same metal extrusion .4 cut to proper length. All of the Stiles 40, 42, 54 and 56 of said sashes 32 and 46 are, however, each of slightly dilferent crosssectional configuration and must be formed of separate metal extrusions cut to proper length, but still each including the described bores 74 and storm sash fastening channels 78.
A storm sash 80 is received in the stationary outer sash 32 within the rails 36 and 38 and the Stiles 40 and 42 thereof. The storm sash 80 is appropriately formed with a frame 82 pivotally mounting a plurality of spaced latch blades 84 around the perimeter of said frame and pivotal to positions in which said latch blades depend from the frame perimeter toward the sash rails and Stiles. The storm sash 80 is received in the stationary outer sash 32 at the inner side of said sash, with a resilient gasket 86 sealing against the sash glass pane 44 and with the latch blades 84 aligned with the storm sash fastening channels 78 for pivotal slidable reception in said channels to secure said storm sash with the stationary outer sash.
The movable inner sash 46 is similarly provided with a storm sash 88 of the same construction, including a frame 90 having a plurality of latch blades 92. The storm sash 88 is similarly received in the movable inner sash 46 within the rails 50 and 52 and the Stiles 54 and 56. A similar resilient gasket 94 seals against the inner side of the sash glass pane 48, while the latch blades 92 are aligned with and pivotally slidably received in the storm sash fastening channels 78 of said movable inner sash, thereby securing the storm sash therewith.
According to the present invention, therefore, I have provided a closure with improved storm sash fastening incorporated therein having the principal advantages of permitting an overall reduction in the Weight of the sash extrusions while permitting a greater choice of glass thicknesses without increasing the transverse dimensions of said closure. As hereinbefore described, the bores 74 for receiving the fastening screws 76 to secure the main sash assembled and the storm sash fastening channels 78 for selectively removably receiving the latch blades 84 of the Storm lsash to secure said storm sash with said main sash all extend in the same general plane, rather than in separate, transversely spaced planes, as in the prior constructions. As a result, the transverse dimensions of the closure of the present invention are not increased by increased sash glass thicknesses.
I claim:
1. In a closure of the type having a frame including a header and a sill maintained in operative and spaced relationship by jambs connected between opposite extremities thereof, a main Sash including upper and lower rails maintained in operative and spaced relationship by Stiles end connected between opposite ends of said rails, said rails and Stiles perimetrically defining a pane opening, a pane mounted in said opening extending in a plane between said rails and Stiles; the improvemnet comprising the combination of: each of at least one of said rails and Stiles having a lengthwise bore formed therethrough in a plane parallel to and spaced normal from said plane of said pane, lengthwise channels formed in said at least one of said rails and Stiles opening into said bores throughout the lengths thereof and opening toward said pane opening in said bore plane spaced normal from said plane of said pane, fastening means received lengthwise in said bores for securing said rail and stile ends; and a storm sash received within said main sash extending parallel to and covering said main sash pane and pane opening, a plurality of latch blade means operably connected to said storm sash and received in said main sash channels and bores for removably securing said storm Sash to said main sash.
2. A closure as defined in claim 1 in which all of said rails and Stiles have substantially identical cross section bores and channels formed therein aligned perimetrically in said bore plane.
