F. MARKOE.
SHEET METAL PIPE.
No. 340,800. Patented Apr. 27, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK MARKOE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO EMANUEL STETN, OF SAME PLACE.
SHEET-METAL PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,800, dated April 27, 1886.
Application filed October 31, 1985. Serial No. 161,451. (No model.)
To allwhom. it may concern.-
Be. it known that l, Fnuniamrok MARkoE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Pipes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the acconr panying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invent-ion relates to sheetinetal pipes constructed of two longitudinally parted halves or sections; and it consists in constructing one of said sections with a rectangular grooved flange on each of its longitudinal edges, except for an inch or more at one end, which part is separated from the flanged edge by a cross-cut, and flattened down to form a projecting lip at right angles with the grooved flange, the other of said halves or sections having a flat rectangular tongue or flange on each of its longitudinal edges extending to within an inch or more of its extreme end, which end is in like manner separated from the flange by a cross-cut, and, instead of being flattened down, is cut away entirely by a second cut at right angles to the first. The sections thus constructed are held together to form a complete pipe by means of said flat flanges or tongues fitting into said grooved flanges, and locked therein by means of said projecting lips, which, by this construction, are thus brought within the opposite section when the two are put together, and abut against the termini of the tongue-flanges thereof, and at the same time keep the pipe in proper shape, as hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing the side and open end of a straight pipe constructed according to my in vention, also showing the outside of the grooved rectangular flange on one side of one of the sections, the smooth ends where the tongue-flanges are cut away, and the lips of the grooved flange-section passed within the opposite section. Figs. 2 and 3 are side elevations of the two sections (separated) of a curved pipe or elbow constructed according to my invention.
In the drawings, A B represent two semicylimlrical-shaped halves orscctions, asin Fi g.
j 1, or semicircular (piadrant-shaped halves or sections, as in Figs. 2 and 3, provided with lapping or uniting flanges a a, forming a (lovetail joint for securing the sections A B to gether to form a pipe having a longitudinal parting. These sections are made from suit able configured blanks, and stamped or shaped in dies, so that they may be produced without rupture or break at any point.
The grooved lapping oruniting flanges a aon the section 13 are formed by bending the longitudinal edges thereof to form a rectangular groove, the opening to which shall face inward. (See Fig. 2.) Such bending, however, is not the whole length of the section; but at the extreme end thereof-say for an inch or morea radial cut is madein the section on each of the longitudinal edges thereof, which part of the edge is not bent up, but forms a projecting lip, a, at right angles with the rectangular grooved flange a, so constructed, as aforesaid, from the remaining portion of the longitudinal edge of the section. The other section, A, is formed with a rectangular flange or tongue, a, (see Fi 2,) on each side, formed by bending each longitudinal edge of the section to a right angle therewith, and cutting away entirely a portion of such edge, as seen at a Fig. 2, of the depth of the flange and of longitudinal length to correspond with the length of the lip a on the opposite section B, and the flange or tongue a of section A conforming in length and depth with the grooved rectangular flange a of section B. The iongitudinally-parted sections A and B are united together to form a pipe by insertingthc tongues aa at the forward end thereof of section A into the grooved flanges a a at the rear end thereof of section B, and then pushing the former forward into the latter until the forward end of the rectangular flanges or tongues a a of the section A shall come flush with the groove flanges, the former cut away theure, and the tendency of the coupling-pipe being directly the opposite, the sections are thus more securely locked and the whole held together. It is apparent that with this pipe no rivets are used, nor are they necessary, and, being easily taken apart and put together, thesec tions can be nested for the purpose of economizing space in storing or shipping; and it will also be seen from above description that the locking device is formed upon one end only of the pipe, the other being grooved its full length, as in that end the other coupling-pipe is usually inserted within the pipe and not over it. This end, however, may be constructed in a sin1ilar manner, if desired, to be used with a coupling-pipe, to be inserted within it.
I do not claim, broadly, a pipe or elbow composed of longitudinally-parted halves'or sections joined together at the edges by a tongue and groove or overlapping flanges or curled edges, my invention having relation only to a fastening, supporting, and locking device formed on the edges of the longitudi- 'nally-parted halves or sections of a sheet-metal pipe or elbow.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A sheet-metal pipe composed of two longitudinally-parted halves or sections,0ne of said sections having on each of its longitudinal edges a rectangular flange or tongue cut away at its extreme end, and the other of said sec tions having on each of its longitudinal edges a rectangular grooved flange, except at its cX- treme end, which is flattened down to form a projecting lip at right angles therewith, whereby said sections are held together by means of said rectangular tongues fitting into said rectangular grooved flanges, and locked therein by means of said projecting lips lying within the opposite section and abutting against the ends of the flanges thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofI have hereunto affixed my signature this 12th day of October, A. D. 1885.
