AIR HEATING AND DRYING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,760, dated April 2'7, 1886.

Be it known that I, SOLOMON N. CAEvALno, a citizen of the United States, and a resident-oi' New York city, in the county ot' New- York and State of New Yorlghave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air ,Heating and Drying Apparatus, of which the contained in the products of combustion or in the heated and dried air derived from the operation of the apparatus or furnace.
It often happens that a greater or less quantity or quality of heat is developed than' is required. In such case it often happens that the spare heat of one apparatus could be made good use of by its combination with another, so that the passage of the products of combustion could be directed fromits original source or occupation through the fines or passagesof a second apparatus, and thence back to the original apparatus or directly up the chimney or tine ofthe second. It also often happens that the heated or dried air as produced is of too high a temperature. In such case the difiiculty may be easily overcome by locating a reservoir or pipe for the heated or dried air and connecting the sameby an intercommunieating pipe or duct and valve with a cold or moist air duct'or pipe, through which the airV to be heated or dried enters either under atmospheric orextra pressure by ordinary draft or by blower. It is in the accomplishment of these objects that my main improvements consist.
In the. accompanying drawings, A designates aboiler of the ordinary steam-generating type. Any heat-developing device may ofcourse be used in place of this. In the boiler, a designates the iiues or tubes leading from furnace to back connection or rear of boiler represented, b, the returntubesleading from back connection or rear to the front of boiler. In the ordinary operation ot such boilers the products of combustion are conveyed fromthe furnace through iilues c to back connection, c, and thence through return-fines b to front connection and to chimney or uptake.
In the drawings, B designates an air drying or heating apparatus or furnace in which, when (No model.)
used alone, the products of combustion are carried up through tlues 0r tubes d to chimney or uptake; also in the drawing, C represents a blower of any style or make,located in any convenient position for supplying a pressure of air to be conveyed through air ducts or pipes, represented by D. A branch pipe or passage, E, is located to connect with D for admitting air under ordinary pressure without the use ot' blower.
F designates one or more out1et-pipes or airpassages, through which the supply of heated or dried air is conveyed to destination. One or more of these may be used.
G designates achamber or reservoir from which the supply of heated air may be taken by one or more ofthe conveyors or air-ducts F.
H designates a valve or means for opening or closing communication between thesnpplypipe D, through -which the air to be heated is admitted, whether under pressure or not,either from blower C or` inlet-pipe E and the rese-rvoir or chamber G, admitting directly to the reservoir G a supply of cold or moist air for commingling with the heated or dried air derived from the heating apparatus. Such valves H may form a direct connection between the supply-pipe D and one or more of the conveyer-pipes F in case variable temperature may be required in each.

The boiler and heating apparatus need not necessarily be set close together, but may be Set apart, leaving the connectionsfand g longer than represented.
In the operation of this furnace or apparatus air to be heated or dried is admitted through D, thence passing, as shown by arrows, past and outside of the array ot' upright iiues or tubes d, to opposite side of furnace,
thence through opening formed between diaphragm-plate n and furnace-wall to upper portion of heating-chamber, through array of iiues d, a second time to reservoir or chamber G, from which it is taken as required. In the construction of this furnace there may be one or more of the diaphraginplates n, so as to force the air to be heated to pass by and between flues d one or more times, as may be desired.

In the joint operation of this apparatus with the boiler or like heat-developing appliance, a lower gate or damper, m, is closed, and upper gate or damper, h, is opened, as shown in full lines. Under such conditions the products of combustion from heat developing furnace pass through flues or tubes a, beneath gate or damper m, through passage g to airheating furnace or apparatus B, thence through ues d to upper connection or passage e, through passagef,to gate or damper h,which being open, permits the gases of combustion passing through to back connection of boiler, and thence through tubes or flues b to uptake or chimney. In case the gate or damper h be shut, the gases of combustion pass directly through c to uptake or chimney o. To cut off communication between the two altogether, gates or dampers It and m are closed or put in position as represented by dotted lines. Sliding plates or other equivalent means may take the place of ZL and m, it only being necessary to close communication. Any heat-dispensing apparatus may take the place of the boiler. Any plain style of air-valve may be used for opening and closing air communication.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In an air heating and drying apparatus,
Athe combination of a heating furnace or charnber having upright lines, through which the products of combustion are passed and about which the air to be heated circulates, a connecting chamber or reservoir from which the supply of heated air is delivered, and valve or gate connecting the cold-air supply-duct with hot air delivery.reservoir,substantially as and for the purposes specied.
2. In an air heating and drying apparatus, gates or diaphragms h and m, connecting the furnace of a boiler or heat-producing apparatus with the furnace or chamber of an air heating and drying appartus, whereby communication is opened or closed between the same, substantially as and for purposes specified.
3. In an air heating and drying apparatus, the combination of the cold-air-inlet pipes D or E, upright fines or tubes d. and one or more diaphragm-plates, n, located within the air heating and drying chamber-,the hot-air reservoir, duct, or chamber G, and one or more hot-air outlets or ducts,F, substantially as and for purposes specified.
4. In an air heating and drying apparatus, the combination of the heating furnace or chamber B ,connecting hot-air receiver or reservoir G, inlet pipes er ducts D or E, through which the air to be heated is admitted, one or more hot-air delivery-pipes,F, branching from the reservoir G, and one or more gates or valves, H, connecting the cold-air admission pipes or ducts with the hotairdelivery-reservoir G or branch pipes F,substantially as and for purposes speeied.
5. In an air heating and drying apparatus,
Vthe combination of a boiler or heat-producing apparatus, gates or dampers h and m, and au air heating and drying chamber or connection, whereby products of combustion from the heatproducing apparatus are admitted, drawn, or forced through the air heating and drying chamber, substantially as specified.
6. In an air heating and drying apparatus, the combination of an air-heating furnace or connection,B, hotair reservoir or chamber G, inlet pipes or ducts D and E,andan intercommunicating connection or valve, H, whereby the heated and dried air is tempered to the degree required, substantially as set forth.
7. In an air heating and drying apparatus, the combination of an air-heating furnace or connection, B, hot-air reservoir or chamber G, delivery pipes or ducts F, and one or more intercommunicating valves, H, whereby the heated or dried air may be delivered at required variety of temperature, substantially as set forth.
