INVENTOR PETE]? WA TEE/4003A PATENT AGENT United, States Patent 3,406,925 ROLL EJECTOR Peter Waterhouse, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, assignor to Dominion Engineering Works, Limited, Lachine, Quebee, Canada, a corporation of Canada Filed Dec. 12, 1966, Ser. No. 601,043 4 Claims. (Cl. 242-66) This invention is directed to transfer apparatus for use in a winding machine, and more particularly to apparatus for transferring core-shaft in the wound or unwound condition from a paper machine winder or rewinder.
In the paper making industry extensive use is made of winders and rewinders. At the dry end of a paper making machine it is necessary to ensure the efficient winding of paper as it comes from the machine into roll form, for subsequent slitting and rewinding. One important operation in the winding of rewinding process is the rapid positioning of core-shaft on the winding apparatus to receive paper stock, and the rapid and safe removal of the wound roll of stock. Owing to the extended width of the machines involved, sometimes exceeding 300 inches, and the great weight of the finished roll, together with the need for rapid and precise handling many previous attempts have been made to provide effective transfer apparatus both for winding and rewinding machines.
Earlier roll and core shaft transfer means have been somewhat complex, and in the crowded environment of paper making and paper handling machines have added complication to the layout of the machines.
An example of an earlier solution to this problem is shown in United States Patent No. 3,107,873, which issued October 22, 1963, the inventor being R. Greding.
The particular problem which has led to a number of solutions lies in the need to provide capability of transferring either an unloaded core-shaft, a round steel bar of approximately 3 inches diameter extending the full width of the machine, or of transferring a roll of paper weighing up to several thousand pounds from the valley formed between a pair of winding drums extending across the width of the machine.
The present invention provides a simplified transfer arrangement comprising a pair of pendant arms having an ejector roll mounted therebetween for the purpose of removing a fully wound roll from the winder, and a pair of toe portions extending beneath the ejector roll and adapted to engage the ends of a core-shaft either when bare of paper or when the roll of paper is of insuflicient diameter to be engaged by the ejector roll.
In addition to facilitating the ready removal of rolls or core-shafts from the winding position on top of the winder drums, the toe portions of the pendant arms are also adapted to operate in the reverse direction to gently lower on empty core-shaft into the valley formed by the winding drums, by cooperation with a pair of rigid, sloped tracks of a core-shaft loader, thus permitting rapid, precise, and gentle handling of the core-shaft in relation to the winder drums.
Certain embodiments of the present invention are described by way of example, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a schematic side elevation showing the transfer apparatus with reference to the other components of a winder; and
FIGURE 2. is an end view taken in the direction II of FIGURE 1.
Referring to FIGURE 1, the winder 20 includes a pair of main frames or pedestals 21 having a pair of side frames 22 in which a pair of winding drums 23 are rotatably mounted. A fixed sloping core-shaft track 24 having a head 25 operated by an actuator 26 guides the coreshaft therefrom into the valley formed between the winding rolls 23.
The roll transfer apparatus or ejector 28 comprises a synchronizing shaft 29 mounted on the frames 21 by means of bearings 30. A pair of pendant arms 33 suspended from the synchronizing shaft 29 extend downwardly, having an ejector roll 34 extending transversely therebetween, supported in bearings 35, generally of the spherical type, contained in housings 36 in the pendant arms 33.
Ejector toe portions 39 extending downwardly from the pendant arms 33 include replaceable low friction wear plates 40, of brass or other suitable material.
The angular position of the pendant arms 33 is controlled by ejector actuators 43 mounted on trunnions 44, each having a double acting cylinder and piston arrangement 45 with a connecting rod 46 attached to the arms 33 respectively by means of a clevis 47 and a bolt 48.
In operation, the transfer apparatus 28 can be moved from the withdrawn position, by operation of the actuators 43, bringing the ejector roll 34 into roll positioning contact, to move a partial or completed roll from the winding drums 23. In the event that the core-shaft is empty or only partially wound to the extent that the paper roll does not contact the ejector roll 34, the toe portions 39 contact the outside ends of the core-shaft, and continued movement of the actuators 43 then moves the core-shaft upwardly and outwardly from the valley formed between winder drums 23, onto the track 24.
In reverse operation, when a core-shaft is being loaded into the valley between the winder drums 23, by operating the loader cylinder to raise the coreshaft to a level where it is allowed to roll down the fixed sloping track 24, the movement of the core-shaft downwardly into the valley can be carefully controlled to avoid damage to the core-shaft or the winder drums.
It will be understood that the synchronizing shaft 29 can be dispensed with by providing hydraulic synchronizing fluid control valves to the actuators 43 to maintain their stroke synchronized, the pendant arms 33 then being supported from the main frame 21 by means of stub axles or other suitable bearing means.
The particular advantages provided by the present invention are simplified layout and low cost construction, together with simplified maintenance and improved reliability.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
