UNITED STATES PATENT mace.
OSWALD S. VAUGHAN, OF GLASGOW, MISSOURI.
FOLDING MUSIC-STAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,391, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed June 30, l885. Serial No. 170,260.
and rapidly, and is strong and durable.
The invention consists in the combination, with a tube, of a rod on the same, a folding music-rack on the same, legs pivoted to the lower end of the tube, and a. tube for surrounding the above-mentioned tube and the parts in and on the same when all are folded. Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures;
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved music-stand erected. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same folded. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of the inner part folded. Fig. A is an enlarged detail view of the middle part of the rack-joint and lock. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the middle part of the rack. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the rack. Fig. 7 is an enlargeddetail sectional view. on the line as m, Fig. 1.
The rack A is formed of six rods, B, hinged by a circular wire, B, in radial notches in the edges of a circular raised part, 0, of a disk, 0.
To combine greater strength with lightness, the rods B are preferably made U-shaped in cross-section.
On the ends of the four diagonal rods B rods D are hinged, the free ends of which are locked to the ends of the rods B, extending up and down. The lower rods, D, haveledges D, to prevent the sheet-music sliding off the rack.
From the under side of the disk 0 a shouldered lug, E, projects, which is pivoted by a screw-pivot,'E, to a shouldered lug, F, on a socket-piece, G, having a binding-screw, G. A winged nut, F, is screwed on the screw E. The socket-piece G serves to receive the upper end of a rod, H, in atube, I, provided at its upper end with a binding-screw, I, and provided at its lower end with a solid block,
(X0 model.)
K, having radial notches L, in which the upper ends of three legs, M, are pivoted, each having an enlargement on the outer edge at the pivoted end. On each enlargement a notch or recess, N, is formed, which, when the leg is about at an angle of fifty degrees, is vertical. A collar, 0, having radial notches is formed on the tube I, near its middle. The tube P has a handle, Q,'and an end cap, It. On the end of the block K adisk, T, is formed. The block K and cap R can be locked in the ends of the tube P by means of a bayonet-lock or other suitable locking devices. The collar 0 keeps the tube I in the center ofv the tube P,
locked in one end of the tube P, and the cap R locked on the other.
The folded stand can easily be carried by means of thehandle Q.
To erect the stand, the cap R is removed,
the block K disengaged, and the tube Ppulled thereby keeping the stand steady and upright.
off the tube I sufficiently to permit the legs M to swing down. The tube P is then moved down, its lower part passing intothe notches N on the upper parts of the legs, thus locking the legs in place. The rod His pulled up as far as desired and locked inplace by the screw I. The socket-piece G is placed on the rod H and locked in place by the screw G. The bars B are swung from each other and held in place by the bars D, as shown in Fig. 6, and the rack turned more or less on the pivot E until it has the desired inclination, and is then locked in place by the screw F.
I am aware that amusic-rack has been supported upon a tube, forming the body of the stand when the rack is in use and a neat and convenient case for the reception of the several parts when the rack is not in use, and I therefore do notclaim such invention.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- ICO vided with the block K, of the pivoted legs IO M, having notches N in the upper ends, and
of the tube P. substantially as herein shown and described.
OSWVALD S. VAUGHAN.
