(Cl. 51347) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A honing device including a support plate with spaced apertures and a threaded bore therein; spaced shafts secured at their one ends to end portions of said support plate, with their free ends adapted for mounting upon and radially adjustable with respect to a honing tool; a channel plate mounted on said support plate with depending bosses nested in said apertures, a fastener retaining said channel plate to said support plate, and an abrasive stone secured upon said channel plate.
This invention is an improvement over the honing device for cylinders shown in my United States Patent No. 3,066,455.
In that patent there was disclosed a honing device for cylinders which included adjustably mounted upon a carrier which was power-rotated a series of right angularly related radially adjustable cylinder bore engaging elements which had mounted thereon either abrasive stones or stabilizing spacers or wipers.
The primary object defined in the earlier patent was to provide a means by which abrasive elements were mounted on a channel construction fixedly secured thereto in such a manner that when the abrasive element was worn it could be easily removed from the supporting plate structure with which it was interlocked and replaced.
The present invention is directed to the slightly dilferent form of support plate construction which also provides a means by which worn stones or spacer elements may be removably interlocked and replaced without complete disassembly and with the discarding of a minimum number of parts.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an improved honing device for cylinders and wherein the improvement lies specifically within a means for removably securing an abrasive or other element to the bracket support by which when worn may be replaced.
This and other objects will be seen from the following specification and claims in conjunction with the appended drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a honing device incorporating the present invention.
FIG. 2 is an end view thereof taken in the direction of arrows 22 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a perspective exploded view illustrating one form of cylinder engaging element namely a wiping element.
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of a removable abrasive stone mounting channel element adapted for assembly within the support portion of FIG. 3.
FIG. 5 is a perspective exploded view of another form of cylinder engaging element.
It will be understood that the above drawing illustrates merely a preferred embodiment of the invention, and that other embodiments are contemplated within the scope of the claims hereafter set' forth.
Referring to the drawing, FIG. 1 generally indicates a honing device for cylinders which includes an elongated carrier 11 having a longitudinal bore 12 and extending from one surface at right angles to its longitudinal axis and displaced from the axis itself a pair of longitudinally "ice spaced transverse bores 13 which communicate with bore 12.
Elongated pinion gear 14 loosely extends through bore 12 and is adapted to mesh 'with the rack gears 15 of a pair of support shafts 16 which form a part of a bracket support generally indicated as 18 mounting abrasive stone 36.
Corresponding to the longitudinally spaced transverse bores 13 there are provided additional sets of longitudinally spaced bores which are arranged so as to extend at right angles or in opposition to bores 13 but are at difierent longitudinal spacing with respect to bores 13 whereby upon and around the carrier 11 may be mounted two pairs of right angularly related opposed cylinder engaging elements. Each of the said elements includes an elongated bracket support which is parallel to the axis of rotation of the carrier and each such cylinder engaging element includes a pair of longitudinally spaced shafts 16 which mount rack gears 15 for cooperative registry with corresponding gear elements or portions of the pinion 14 and thus on rotation of the said pinion adapted for radial adjustments inwardly and outwardly with respect to carrier 11.
One form of cylinder engaging element 18 is shown in FIG. 5 which includes support plate 17' from which depends the pair of longitudinally spaced shafts 16 including the rack gears 15.
The concentrically arranged driving ring 19 is pivotally connected to carrier 11 on diametrically opposite sides thereof as by fasteners 20 and is itself at diametrically opposed sides secured flexibly as at 21 to the stirrup 22 whose reduced shank 23 is fixedly secured as at 25 to the power driven spindle 24 of a machine tool for effecting a rotating driving action to the carrier 11 for the honing tools. Conventional adjusting means are provided such as the gear assembly 27 and the manual control 26 for effecting relative rotary control movements of pinion 14, which in turn effects simultaneous radial adjustment of the respective cylinder engagin g'elements.
The present invention is primarily directed to the construction of the cylinder engaging elements such as element 18 of FIG. 5 or the element 40 shown in FIG. 3. With respect to cylinder engaging element 18 shown in FIG. 5 said element includes support plate 17 which has formed therethrough a pair of longitudinally spaced apertures 28 and intermediate said apertures and adjacent one side edge of plate 17 the threaded bore 29.
Elongated channel plate 30 has a fiat bottom surface 31 from which depends a pair of longitudinally spaced bosses 32 adapted to cooperatively nest and interlock within apertures 28 in plate 17. The edge portion of the channel plate 30 has an outwardly opening groove 33 and communicating therewith a secondary laterally opening enlarged recess 34 adapted to cooperatively receive holddoWn screw 35 which extends through openings 33 and 34 for retainingly engaging channel plate 30 and securing the same upon support plate 17, FIG. 1.
The cylinder engaging element 18 includes an elongated abrasive stone 36 of Carborundum or the like, which is mounted upon the top surface 37, being slightly inclined, bears against elongated ledge 38 and is suitably cemented or otherwise fixedly secured in position at 39.
The assembled plates, namely channel plate 30 and support plate 17, interlocked by bosses 32 and apertures 28, are effectively secured together by the single fastener 35; and the entire assembly is then projected, for example, into the pair of transverse bores 13.
Normally in honing tools of this type there will be provided an additional abrasive element 18 diametrically opposed from the first abrasive element as shown in FIG. 1. A second diametrically opposed pair of cylinder engaging elements 40-50 are provided in the nature of stabilizing wipers and'which include a non-abrasive surface engaging element such as element 50, which may be of a die cast construction or could be non-metallic consisting of rubber, neoprene, felt, mohair, or the like.
A slightly different form of cylinder engaging element is shown in FIG. 3 and providing a mount for the wiping assembly 50. In this construction the bracket support again includes'a support plate 17 similar to support plate 17 of FIG. whose ends are reversed turned as at 41 defining a pair of opposed channels. One edge of the plate 17' has a pair of cutaway notches 42 which cooperatively receive the depending bosses 45 adjacent opposite ends of the elongated formed leafspring 43 which is centrally anchored as by rivet 44 upon the support plate 17. End portions of the leafspring 43 are spaced closely adjacent to or within the channels 41 and intermediate portions of the leafspring are bowed outwardly as at 46 to provide a yielding support for the wiper assembly.
The wiper assembly includes an elongated flat channel plate 47 which has at its opposite ends outwardly extending projections 48 of reduced dimension adapted for sliding interlock within the opposed channels 41. Said plate is retained in assembled relation by a pair of longitudinally spaced stops 53 which depend from one side of plate 47 and are adapted to nest within notches 42, FIG. 3. Then plate 47 is slidably nested into registry within channels 41 with spring 43 in compression. Thus, a wiper assembly can be easily replaced by slidably disengaging channel plate 47 from support plate 17'41. The assembly is so arranged that the stops 53 oppose relative movement of channel plate 47 with respect to support plate 17 in one direction. Relative movement in the opposite direction is opposed by the direction of rotation of the carrier 11.
Instead of the assembly shown in FIG. 5 a slightly different form of mount is provided for the abrasive stone 55 of FIG. 4, but incorporating the spring yieldable support plate 17'-43. Here the abrasive cylinder engaging element includes a channel 51, which has at its opposite ends the outwardly extending undercut projections 52 which are adapted to cooperatively nest within the channels 41 of FIG. 3. A pair of longitudinally spaced stops 53 extending from the adjacent end portions of the plate 51 cooperatively register within the notches 42 to limit relative movement upon assembly. The top surface of the channel 51 as at 54 mounts the abrasive stone 55 which bears against the elongated retaining ledge 56, said stone being fixedly secured as by a suitable cement as at 57 along its undersurface engaging portions with respect to the channel plate '51.
With the cylinder engaging element including the abrasive stone 55 of FIG. 4 assembled with respect to support plate 17 and leafspring 43 it would seem that the said spring 43 is under compression and thus yieldably mounts abrasive stone 55. At the same time upon wearing out of the stone 55 the channel assembly 54 is easily removable from the channels 41 and a new channel assembly with abrasive stone or wiper replaced.
One advantage of the present design is that for a particular honing tool it may employ two stones, such as stones 36 or stone 55, and a pair of oppositely arranged wipers, such as the wiper 50. Alternately, four stones may be arranged upon the honing tool, which may be a rigid mount, such as provided for at 36, FIG. 5, or a yieldable mount such as provided for in FIG. 4, as combined with the channel plate holder 17 of FIG. 3. Another variation is that 4 able support of FIG. 3, or the stone assembly 55 of FIG. 4 may be applied with the yieldable support of FIG. 3.

In the honing of long tubing of uneven inside diameter where finish alone is desired, four stones spring-loaded, such as stone 55, may be employed, which stones will thus flex or yield with varying bore sizes.

In dry honing two stones and two wipers may be desirable since with portable power sources, such as a one-half inch portable drill motor, would not have the power needed to drive four abrasive stones.

In wet honing or where power is fully adequate four abrasive stones may be employed with the advantage of faster cutting action.
All four stones may be fixedly mounted, or all four stones could be yieldably mounted, or there could be a combination as, for example, with two stones unyieldably mounted, such as stone 36 of FIG. 5, there will be generated geometric bore accuracy, and when used with two stones which are spring-loaded, such as the stones 55, with the FIG. 3 mounting all hone chatter is prevented.
These features above described in the foregoing examples formerly required the use of more than one honing tool, one for each specific purpose and by the present construction all of such stone mountings may be incorporated into a single hone, including the variations in design and use of rigid and yieldable mountings above set forth.
Having described our invention reference should now be had to the following claims.
We claim: 1. In a honing device for cylindrical bores, including a power-rotated carrier, and a plurality of opposed pairs of cylinder engaging elements on said carrier, each element including an elongated bracket support parallel to the axis of rotation of the said carrier and a pair of spaced shafts secured at their one ends to said bracket support and at their opposite ends adjustably mounted upon and through and radially adjustable outwardly of said carrier;
the improvement comprising a means for removably securing an abrasive element to said bracket support;
said bracket support including a flat elongated support plate having a pair of longitudinally spaced apertures therein and a threaded bore; a channel plate having a flat bottom surface cooperatively registering with said support plate;
longitudinally spaced bosses depending from said channel plate nested and interlocked within said support plate apertures;
a fastener retainingly engaging said channel plate and threaded into said support plate bore;
and an elongated abrasive stone fixedly secured to the outer surface of said channel plate.
2. In the honing device of claim 1;
said channel plate including an elongated top ledge along one of its edges;
there being a laterally opening slotted portion formed in said ledge cooperatively receiving said fastener.
3. In a honing device for cylindrical bores an elongated bracket support including a flat elongated support plate having a pair of longitudinally spaced apertures therein and a threaded bore;
a pair of spaced shafts secured at their one ends to said support plate and at their opposite ends adapted for mounting upon and through and radially adjustable with respect to a honing tool;
a channel plate having a flat bottom surface cooperatively registering with said support plate;
longitudinally spaced bosses depending from said channel plate nested and interlocked within said support plate apertures;
a fastener retainingly engaging said channel plate and threaded into said support plate bore;
and an elongated abrasive stone fixedly secured to the outer surface of said channel plate.
4. In the honing device of claim 1;
at least one of said bracket supports including a flat,
elongated support plate;
opposite ends of said plate being reversed turned defining a pair of opposed channels;
a formed leafspring mounted upon and along said support plate extending between said channels and secured to said support plate;
intermediate portions of said spring being yieldably spaced above said support plate;
a channel plate having a flat bottom surface with undercut projections extending from its opposite ends;
said plate bearing upon said support plate with said projections retainingly extending into said channels and with said spring in compression yieldably mounting said channel plate;
and a bore engaging element fixedly secured to the outer surface of said latter channel plate.
