To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that l, HALEY S. RAMsEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Comanche, in the county of Comanche andState of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Balanced Pumps; and l do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in balanced pumps having two vertical receiving-cylinders provided with'vertically-reciprocating plungers, and two vertical deliverycylinders provided with plunging-barrels, all being provided with suitable valves operating automatically in conjunction therewith; and the objects of my improvements are, first, 'to provide a pump by means of which water or other fluids may be conducted or raised with but little propelling power, and, second, to afford facilities for readily attaching it to be driven by any steam-engine or motive power. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical elevation of the machine, partly in section; Fig. 2, a top View of the same.

The -vertical cylinders A A are bolted to bed-plate B, which plate forms a bottom head for them. Through this plate are openings C, which are closed by valves D, which are on the upper side of said plate, on the inside of the cylinders A A. E, Fig. 1, is a yoked plunger provided with a central opening. On the upper side of this plunger is a valve, a.
F F are two lieXible conductors or tubes. These tubes respectively connect with the top of the plunger-barrel G and the cylinder A. They are attached to said barrel and cylinder near their tops. ff are expansion-joints on the conductors F F. The ends of said conductors are connected to the plunger-barrels G and cylinders A by rocking water-tight joints, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1,which joints allow the conductors to freely accommo` date themselves to the rectilinear movements `0f the straight plungenbarrels, which barrels are adapted to reciprocate in vertical lines, as shown. These watertight and expansion joints admit of the barrels being moved up and down. G G are plunger-barrels, which have a vertical movement in the stationary vertical cylinders H H. The plungerbarrels G are provided with openings e and valves I) on their under sides. I [are pipes leading from the under sides of the cylinders H H, respectively, to the reservoir J, said pipes communicating with the cylinders H andl reservoir.
K is a shaft, (which may be mounted on suitable bearings,) provided with two opposite crank-arms, The outer ends of these arms are connected to the upper ends of rods M M. The lower ends of said rods are centrally connected to crossarms N N. On one end of each of said cross-arms is connected the top of the piston-rod g, and the other end of the arm is connected to the top of the plunger-barrel G.
L is a band on the shalt K, by means of which power may be communicated to the operative parts.
It should be borne in mind that all the part hereinbefore specified, whether designated in the singular or plural, are in duplicate, eX- cepting theplate B, shaft K, band-wheel L, and reservoir J.
The operation of the device is as follows: When the shaft K is rotated, the armsi t' turn with it. This movement imparts a reciprocating movement to the cross-arms N N, plunger-barrels G G, rods g g, and yoked plungers E. On the upward stroke of ythe plungers E the valve D is opened (the opening under said valve communicating with a suitable supplypipe) and water admitted to the cylinder A. On the downward stroke of said plunger the valve a thereon is opened, and thewater passes upward and out through the liexible tube F, and thence into the plunger-barrel G. On the upward stroke of the barrel G the valve b thereon is opened, and the water passes through the opening e into the cylinder H, from which cylinder it is forced into the pipe l, and thence into the reservoirJ on the downst-roke of said barrel.
