APPARATUS FOR THE HYDROPROPULSION F VESSELS.

To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, AUGUST CHRISTIAN N'AGEL, REINHOLD HERMANN KAEMP, and ADOLF ZLINNENBRUGGE, engineers, all residents of Hambur ,in the German Empire, and subjects of the Emperor of Germany,- have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for the Hydropropulsion and Steering of Vessels, 01' which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Thisinvention relates to the propulsion of vessels by the reaction of a jet of water propelled by a turbine through a dischargetubc v at the stern of the vessel.

According to the present improvements the discharge-tube A, which extends rearward outside the vessel at the lower part thereof, is provided with appliances whereby the action of the water-jet can be so modified as to cause the vessel to be steered, stopped, or moved backward. For these purposes the discharge-tube A is provided near its orifice, and in the portion which is exposed beyond the vessel, with two opposite lateral openings 'r and r, in which are fitted llaps,'valvcs, or doors a and a, mounted at or near their centers on vertical'pivots or shafts .av 01:, so that they can either be made to lie ilush (see Figs. 1 and 2) with the sides of the tube when clos ing the openings, or to assume any angular position (see Figs. 3 and 4) relatively to the tube A, at the same time leaving the apertures r or 1- more or less open. Thus, when the flaps are in the first-named position (see Figs. land-2) and in line with the sides of the tube, the whole body of the water will be propelled through the exit-orifices c at the end of the tube, for effecting the forward propulsion. of the vessel in the direction of its longitudinal axis. Vhen, on the other hand, one of the flaps-for instance, n'-is turned into an angular position, so as to project partly across (No moth-Ll the tube A, while the other flap, n, remains closed, a portion of the body of water will be deflected by the first-named flap and made to issue at a corresponding angle through the side opening, r, thereby causing the bows of the vessel to be steered or moved laterally in the same direction. Again, if both flaps be inclined inward, as shown in Fig. 4, so as entirely or partially to obstruct the issue of the body of water-through the end discharge-opening 6 and cause it to pass out on each side thrbugh the two lateral openings 'r and r, the forward motion of the vessel will either be retarded or stopped, or, by reaction, it will be made to move backwa rd. A third ilap-valve, 0, arranged behind the flaps n and n, where it is pivoted centrally to the tube A, and likewise turnable by a steering apparatus, may be employed to fully close or block the exit-opening c, to prevent any escape ol' water through c while'ilaps a are partly or wholly closed.
Although we have spoken of vessels with a single discharge-tube, yet the invention is equally applicable where two or more discharge-tubes, A, are employed, in which case it may either be applied to only one of the tubes or to all of them.
lVe are aware that in apparatus for the h ydropropulsion of v'cssclsthenmin pipes, which extend to the stern of the vessel, are often pro vided with side or lateral branches, and valves controlling the passage of water through the main pipes and also through the lateral branches,and hence we do not desire to cover, broadly, an arrangement of such nmin pipes and branches with valves, but limit our invention to the particular COHStruclion herein shown and described.
In our apparatus the main discharge-pipe A is prolonged somewhat outside the vessel, and its portion which is exposed beyond the Vessel is provided with lateral openings formed directly in the sides of the pipe or tube and destitute of any branches extending from the main pipe or tube. The laps or valves n n, which control these openings, are so titted that they may be swung into line with the sides of the tube for closing the openings,and so that they may be swung at an angle to the tube, to permit and direct the flow of water from the tube laterally through these openlugs.
What we claim as ourinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with avessel, of a tube extending rearward outside the vessel at the lower part thereof, and having in its portion which is exposed beyond the vessel lateral openings 1* 'r, and the swinging valves or flaps n n, vertically pivoted in said openings, so that they may swing into line with the sides of the tube to close said openings or at angles to the tube to permit and direct the flow of water laterally from the tube through said openings, substantially as herein described.
2. The co1nbination,with a vessel, of a tube extending rearward outside the vessel at the lower part thereof, and having lateral openings r r in its portion which is exposed beyond the vessel, the flap or "alve 0, pivoted centrally in the tube in rear of said lateral openings, and the swinging flaps or valves n a, vertically pivoted in said openings, so that they may be swung into line with the sides of the tubes to close said openings or at angles to the tube to permit and direct the flow of water laterally from the tube through said openings, substantially as herein described.
