CAR-BRAKE.
PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,905, dated April 13, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LANG, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Car-Brake, of which the following specification is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved carbrake, which is also applicable to other vehicles, and by means of which the motion of the vehicle may be rapidly and readily checked.
The invention consists in the elements of improvement hereinafter more fully pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view, partly in perspective, of the lower part of a car provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail sectional and front views of lever (Z,- and Fig. 5 is a side view of the elastic band.
The letters a represent the two axles of a car or other vehicle, to which the wheels are rigidly keyed. As the brakes for the front and rear axle are substantially alike, the description of one will apply to both.
Upon axle a is rigidly secured a disk, I), grooved around its circumference to form a seat for a sheet-metal flexible band, 0, which constitutes the brake-shoe. The two ends of this band are attached to a lever, d, that is pivoted between the two ends of the band to a support or bar, f. This bar connects the axles a a, as shown.
The lower end of-th'e lever d is connected to the front brake-lever, e, and also to the rear brake-lever, c, if two brakes are used, in the following manner: To the supportf there is pivoted a cross-bar, 9, connected at one end to the front brake-lever, e, by chain 71, and at the other end to the rear brake-lever, e, by chain h. The two ends of bar g are also connected to the front and rear levers d by the chains l i. The levers e e are free to be oscillated backward and forward and to be locked in any position. To this effect they are provided with a projection adapted to engage a rack, Z, attached to the frame of thevehicle. In place of this construction, the levers c 0 may be of other suitable form. Now, when the forward lever e is oscillated backward, it will throw the lower ends of both the levers (Z away from their axles. This oscillation of levers (1 will cause them to draw the upper end of each band 0 downward and the lower end outward, thus stretching the band and causing it to close firmly upon disk 1). Thus the disk will be effectually held and prevented from revolving. On release of the brake-lever a spring, m, will throw levers (I back into their normal position.
I prefer to attach the band a to the lever d in such a manner that the band may be lengthened and shortened. The upper end of the band is formed into an eye, which encircles a bolt, a, stretched across a slot of lever (1. The lower end of the band is rigidly connected to a screw-threaded pin, 0, which passes through a second perforated bolt, a, of lever d. A nut is placed against either side of bolt it upon pin 0, and by loosening or tightening these nuts the length of the band 0 may be increased or diminished. The advantages of this construction are, among others, that, owing to the large contact-surface between band 0 and disk I), the brake will cause a large amount of friction even with little power. Moreover, the brake bears uniformly, or nearly so, around all sides of the axle, and is protected from snow and ice to a greater extent than the ordinary wheelbrakes.
If desired, the levers g of a train of cars maybe connected at their ends, so that all the brakes may be operated by one man or from the engine. Instead of attaching the wheel b to the axle, as here described, this wheel may be attached directly to the wheels.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of axles a a, having disks 1), with bands 0, levers (Z, and bar 9, connected to the brake-levers, the levers d and bars 9 being pivoted to bar j, that connects axles a a, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of axle a with disk 1), band 0, attached to threaded pin 0, and with lever (I, having perforated bolt a adapted to receive pin 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
The combination of axles a with disk b, bands 0, levers d, bar 1 pivoted to fixed support f, and with chains h h t z", the two ends of bands 0 being attached to levers d, substantially as specified.
