BOOK AND PAPER FOLDING MACHINE.
EFECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,868, dated April 13, 1886.
Application filed April 25,1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADONIRAM J UDSON DAVI- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Book and Paper Folding Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in book and paper folding machines; and the objects of my improvements are to construct an improved machine that may be used either as a book or paper folding machine. I attain my objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the machine as it appears looking at it from the front, the front of the frame having been removed. Fig. 2 is a side view of the machine, looking atit' from right to left.

a is the table ortop of the machine,on which the paper is placed, the first page of the folio sheet being downward and on the left-hand table, or the table to the right hand of Fig. 1, which is really the left side of the machine.

G G are the rods down which the paper slides at an angleof forty-five degrees and rests on stop D.
E is the bar or support to which is attached blade F,which doubles the paper and starts it between the rollers G G, making the second fold, and landing the paper on guide-rods over rollers m m.
H is a blade attached to an upright bar, d, and is used to force the paper down between the rollers m m, whence it slides down guiderods I I in Fig. 2, and rests on stop b.
J J are rollers between which the paper is started by blade K, attached to bar L, making the fourth fold and dropping the paper into the box M.
U represents the folded papers in box M.
O is an upright bar to which are attached two leather straps.
P is the top strap,and is attached to the top of the bar 0, and extends upward and attaches to blade B.

to bar 0 near the bottom of said bar, and extends upward and over pulley 6, running by the ends of rollers G G and attaching to the end of rod or bar E, Fig. 1.
r in Fig. 1 is a spiral spring, to pull the bar E and blade F back from between the rollers G G, so as to allow the paper to pass down the guide-rods C C.
t, Fig. 2, is a spiral spring, which swings blade B on the pivot Q, which throws blade B up at an angle with rollers A A, and admits of the paper being delivered from the fly of the press. Blades B and F, Fig. 1, are raised at the same instant by the springs r and t, Figs. 1 and 2, thus raising bar 0.
a shows a combined belt and beveled cogwheel, to which is bolted lug Y. When the combined belt and cog wheel is in motion, one-half of the machine is propelled by a belt, S, and when bar 0 is in a raised position it is forced down by lug Y,and by aid oft-he straps P and N blades B and F are brought between the two pairs of rollers A A and G G, thus making the first and second folds at the same time.
h, Fig. 1, is a small wheel set in a slot in bar 0, which, when bar 0 is in a raised position, is struck by lug Y and pulled down to the position shown in Fig. 1, where the lug Y leaves the wheel is in bar O,allowing bar 0, with its small wheel k, to rise by means of springs r and t, Figs. 1 and 2, ready to be struck again by lug Y at the next revolution of the belt and cog wheel 0, to which is attached the lug Y. The third and fourth folds are made substantially the same as the first and second folds, but at alternate time-that is, when the blades B and F, Fig. 1, are forced between the rollers, the blades H and K, Fig. 2, are raised ready to strike the paper for the third and fourth folds at the same time the blades for the first and second folds are drawn from the rollers A A and G G. Blade H is made fast to and at right angles with bar (I, as are also blades F and K with bars E and L in Figs. 1 and 2.
The entire machine is propelled by a belt or chain attached to wheel a, whose shaft extends through the frame of the machine and carries the combined belt and beveled cog wheel W, which wheel is connected by means of the beveled cogs to the combined belt and cog wheel a. By these cog-wheels the. connection between the first and second and third and fourth folding mechanism is secured. By connecting the cogs at the point where the lugs Y, Fig. 1, and the one on wheel W (not shown) are at opposite points, the opposition of motion is secured.
h represents bolts holding the lug on wheel W, which lug acts on small wheel X, Fig. 2, similar to the way lug Y operates on the small wheel k in Fig. 1.
s is a spiral spring, that assists spring 7 in pulling up bar d,- o, a diagonal brace from bar a to blade H.
R is a spiral spring to check the force of the blow of blade B.
9 is a pulley for belt T to pass around in order to cause belt T to carry the lower roller, J. Belts S and T pass around and between the ends of the several rollers which serve or act as pulleys.
Z, Fig. 1, dotted line, shows where an extra roller may be placed in order to feed the papers so as to run between rollers A A without folding and pass in position to be folded the first time by rollers G G.
The right is reserved to extend bar O upward, so as to attach blade B directly on bar 0, substantially the same as blade H to bar cl, and dispense with the hinge movement at Q ind then have the papers delivered in position by sliding on fingers from the cylinderpress.
The machine will deliver the sheets after it receives either one, two, three, or four 'folds, as follows: First, by removing stop D, the sheet will slide from the machine after receiving one fold by rollers A A; second, by using rollers A A as feeders, so that thesheet may pass between said rollers A Aand rest on stop D without being folded, and by removing stop 11, the sheet will slide from the machine after receiving two folds by rollers G G and m m; third, by using rollers A A as feeders, so that the sheet may pass between rollers A A and rest on stop D without being folded, the sheet will receive three folds by rollers G G, m m, and J J; fourth, by removing stop I), the sheet will slide from the machine after receiving three folds by rollers A A, G G, m m,- fifth, the sheet receives four folds by passing through rollers AA, G G, m m, and J J.
The paper may be placed on the table a a by hand when taken from the hand press; or, it connected with a cylinder-press, the papers may be delivered on table a a from the fly of the press,or carried from the cylinder on tapes; but in either of the three ways for getting the paper from the press to the folder the paper is placed on the tables a a with the center directly over rollers A A and m m, and by the descentof blade B, by the mechanism provided, the sheet is caused to pass folded once 'through rollers A A, and slide down inclined rods 0 0, whose mechanism is such as to convspective bar.
vey the'sheet over rollers G G until the folded edge of the sheet rests on adjustable stock D, and its center is directly between blade F and the middle of rollers G G, so that,
by the pressure of blade F the sheet passes folded the second time through rollers G G, and by the force of rollers G G and the stiffness of the twice-folded sheet the paper is caused to slide,without the aid of tapes, from rollers G G, and rest on a horizontal set of guide-rods, M M, with the middleof the paper directly over rollers m m and under blade H. At the same time that the paper is passing through rollers G G, receiving the second fold,
the next sheet coming from the press receives its first fold by passing through rollers A A, for by the mechanism provided blades B and F descend at the same instant, and are thrown back to their former places by the pulling of springs t, Fig. 2, and r, Fig. l, and rest there while the third and fourth folds are being made. The paper having been thus foldedtwice, the operation with similar mechanism has only to be repeated to receive the third and fourth folds. The paper starting from its horizontal position over rollers mm by the descent of blade H. (corresponding with the operation of blade B and rollers A A,) the pabetween rollers m m, sliding down a second set of'inclined rods, I I, Fig. 2, until it lodges with its thrice-folded edge on adjustable stop b, with its middle between rollers J J and blade K, and by the force of blade K is doubled the fourth time and made to pass through rollers J J and fall into box M. -At the same time that the fourth foldis being made byrollers J J the third fold of the sheet following is being made by rollers m m. Exactly the same mechanism is used to accomplish the first and second folds that is used in making the third and fourth folds, except that blade H is made fast to bar a,instead of swinging on by a strap running from the blade to its fre- The main driving-power is received at driving-wheel n, whose shaft extends through combined belt and beveled cog wheel W. Around the part provided on wheel W there passes a belt,T, which goes around and between the ends of rollers m m and J J in such a manner as to bear upon and revolve rollers m m and J J. At each revolution of wheel W a lug attached thereto forces bar d downward, carrying with it blades H and K, I
which cause the papers to pass through rollers m m and J J at the same time. The on wheel W areconnected with the cogs of wheel rollers A A and G G. Wheel 0 also carries lug Y, and at each revolution of wheel 0 lug Y forces bar 0 downward, carrying with it blades B and F by their strapconnections P and N, thus doubling and folding the two papers between rollers A A and G G at the same instant.
The same number of cogs are made i in both wheelsWand c, and are connected, so 5 pen is made to double the third time and pass 7 1 25 c, which wheel W, by the use of belt S, revolves as to cause the lugs with which they are provided to move the folding-blades B F alternately with folding-blades H K, and thus prevent the papers from coming in contact with each other over rollers m m.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of folding knives or blades B F H K, bars 0 and r.Z,'carrying wheels is and X, respectively, straps P, N, and y, lugs or wipers Y, wheels 0 and \V, belts S and T, and rollers A A, G G, m m, J J, with proper mechanism for their operation, substantially as described and specified.
