5 Pho Partnr @reina BENTOX H. VELLNES, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINl A.
sEPARATlnG-Tnete SPECIFICATION forming part Application [iled October i7, 1885. Serial No. 130,159.
Be it known that I, BnN'ro-.v H. Veterans, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county ofNorlolk and State oil Virginia, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Separatinglables; and i do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcn tains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or ligures of reference marked thereon, which t'orin a part oi' this specification.
Figure l oi' the drawings is a representation of atop or plan 4view ot' my improved device. Fig.2isaside elevation ol the saine. Fig. 3 is an end elevation ol the same. el is a transverse section taken on the lines :r a' ol' Fig. l; and Fig. is a detail view of the main i'ranie, showing the belt-adjusting device.
rlhis invention has relation to picking-tables for peanuts, beans, die.; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement oi' parts, as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
in the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a frame having the longitudinal bearing-lmards il, near the ends oi which are the rollers C l'or the endless beltsl), which pass along said bearing-boards. The edges ol" the belts are covered by moldings in the middle longitudinal portion oi' the table are provided deep measuring boxes or rev ceptaeles F, which extend below the level of the table, and stopfboards or guards G eX- tend upward ironi the tops ol' said receptacles, higher than the general level oi" the table. The said guards may be formed on the boxes, or the supportiiig-frame. ln the present in stance these guards are shown on three sides of the nieasuring-boXes-viz., the backs, which are on a line coincident with the longitudinal center ot' the table, and the sides, which are transverse to the said table. The peanuts or beans, being fed to the belts, pass along with the saine as they are carried by the rollers, and the picking-hands stationed along the edge or edges of the table select those oi' higher or lower grade, and throw them into the meas uring boxes or receptacles F. vThose nuts which pass to the end of the table are discharged downward through a chute, H, or the of Letters Patent No. 339,605, dated April 6, 1886.

like, into a suitable receiver. The guards G enable the hands to work quickly in throwing the nuts into the receptacles, as they prevent the nuts from liying past the mouths of the l boxes. The attention ofthe hands therefore l can be better directed to the selecting wor-lr on the traveling table.
In order to provide means for tightening the belts of the table, thejournals ofthe rollers at one end ol the table are provided with adjustable boxes I, which work in slideways or elongated bearings K, and are provided with screwstenis L, which are operated by means of nuts N, which bear against the faces i ol' the plates P, through openings in which the screw-stems pass.
The measuring boxes or receptacles F may be made removable, so that the same may be italien out, when desired, for repairs or the like, and to provide said boxes with hinged bottoms S, which may beheld closed by chains or rods R, extending upward, and being attached to hooks or other catches at the mout-hs oil the boxes. Then a -box is full, it can be discharged by lowering the rod and allowing the bottoni to fall, the contents ot' the bonr passing downward into a suitable chute or receptacle.
rlhe measuringboxes are removably supported in the main frame, and hence may be removed when desired. I have shown these boxes with one of their walls having an outer flange at their upper end, so as to engage the main frame i'orsupport; but I do not wish to coniine niyseli' to such devices, as it is obvious that the same may be changed without departing from my invention. By means of these devices the work of each of the pickingl hands can be measured and inspected, and an accurate account kept ol it, so that the work will not be slighted by any of them, and they can be graded according to their ability.
Having described this invention, what I i claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l. The combination, with the picking-table,
of the measuring boxes or receptacles extending below the level of the table, and having the raised guard-boards extending above said level, substantially as specified.
2. rThe combination, with a picking or sepa- IOO rating table, ol` measuring boxes having hinged bottoms and Catches, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with a picking or separating table, of removable measuring-boxes and guards extending above the level of the table, substantially as specified.
4. A picking-table for peanuts, consisting of a main frame, alongitudinal series of measuring boxes arranged therein, and endless ro belts arranged at opposite longitudinal sides of the said boxes, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
