ALFRED D. BABCOCK, OF LEON, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND EDGAR A. HUBBELL, OF SAME PLACE.-
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,517, dated April 6, 1886.
Application filed August 18, 1885. Serial No. 174,746. (No model.)
is supported by the bail-rests a so that the end of the loop is on the same horizontal plane as the shaft D, and so that the ends e come below the said horizontal plane. 55
lVhen two cars are brought together, the bail of one slips over the hail of the other, and the lowest bail than raises the one resting on it and strikes against the draw-head of the opposite car. The arms d are turned back- 60 ward until they strike against the stops a thus depressing the ends e of the bail and raising its looped portion, so that it can throw the opposite bail into a nearly vertical position, as shown in Fig. -1, and then slide upward 65 over the end of the opposite draw-head and engage with the shoulder a on the top of it and with the head of the pin which projects above the top of the said draw-head.
In order to uncouple cars, a spring-plate, 70 F, is provided and attached to the top of each draw-head. The pin passes through a slot,
f, in this plate, and the head of the said pin rests upon the draw-head.
G is a ring fastened to the plate F, for rais- 7 ing it, and thereby disengaging the loop of the bail from contact with the shoulder a and the pin 0.
A chain, II, may be attached to ring G, so that the cars may be uncoupled from the roof; 80 or levers maybe pivoted to the ends of the cars, so that the uncoupling may be effected. from the sides.
In Fig. 4 I show the construction for automatically lowering the pin. In this construc- 8 5 tion a rod, I, is passed through the rear wall of the pocket 0, and bears a plate, I, at its forward end within the pocket. The rear end of this rod connects with the lower end of a lever, J, which is pivoted between its ends, 0 and is jointed at its upper end to the pin-sup- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED D. BABCOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leon, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New 5 York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a description.
Figure l is a side view of the ends of two cars to which the coupling is attached, showing 10 them coupledtogether. Fig. Zisasideviewof one of the couplings, with portions of the end of the car shown in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one coupling, looking downward from above; and Fig. 4 is a partial side and sectional View of one of the couplings, showing the trip for the pin.
This invention relates to car-couplings; and it consists in the detailed construction of the parts, hereinafter fully described, by which cars maybe automatically coupled together,
and which may be used as a common. link-andpin coupling when only one ear is provided with the automatic device.
' In the accompanying drawings similar lot ters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A are the draw-heads, which slide back and forth in suitable guides attached to the framework of the cars, and are provided with buffer- 0 springs B, or with other springs of the kind commonly in use for such purposes. Each draw-head is provided with a pocket, 0, in the front part of it, and with a pin, a, passing through holes in the end of the draw-head, so
3 5 that two draw-heads can be united together by alink as commonly employed in car-couplings; or one of the draw-heads A may be coupled to any other kind of draw-head with which a common coupling will engage. The draw- 0 heads A are also each provided with the shout.
der a on top, with the stops a and a upon their sides, and with bail-rests a 1) is a short shaft pivoted in the sides of each draw-head, and provided with an arm, d, se-
5 curely fastened to each end of it, and with a spring, (2, inside the said draw-head. The spring (1 keeps the arms (1 pressing against the stops a on the draw-head.
E is the bail, consisting of a rod bent to form a loop, and provided with ends 6, which are pivoted in the ends of the arms (1!. The bail porting plate F. By this construction the plate F, when raised, will be held elevated by the lever J, and the plate I will be thrown forward in position to be engaged by the link 9 5 in entering the pocket 0. The link engaging this plate will strike the plate I, force the same back, and so operate the lever, which will be moved so as to release the plate F, and the pin will descend into the pocket 0 and rest IOO through the link.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and is desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
l. A car-coupling comprising a draw-bar having a hook andlateral shoulders a, a shaft journaled to said draw-bar and having crankarms d, and the bail supported on the outer ends of said arms and arranged to rest on the shoulders of, substantially as set forth.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination of the draw-head A, provided with shoulder a, the stops a and a and the bail-rests a, the shaft D, having the spring (1 and arms d, and the bail E, provided with ends 0 and pivoted to the said arms, substantially as described and shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In tear-coupling, the combination of the spring-plate F, provided with aring and chain for raising it, the bail E, having ends e, the arms (I, the shaft D, provided with spring (1, and a draw-head, A, having shoulder a, stops a and a", and the bail-rests (1 substantially as described and shown, and for the purpose set forth.
4. Theimproved car-coupling,substantially as herein described and shown, consisting of ALFRED D. BABOOOK.
