STEPHEN A. D. HARTMAN, OF CHARLES CITY, IOlVA.
HARROW.
. PECIFIJATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339308, dated April 6, 1886.
Application filed July 2, 1885. Serial No. 170,503. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN A. D. HART- MAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Charles City, in the county of Floyd and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accoinpanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invent-ion relates to wheel or sulky harrows; and it consists in the improvements hereinafter described and set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a plan View of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a front view showing each of the sections raised, and Fig. 3 is a side view.
A represents the main or carrying frame, which converges from the rear supportingwheels, A, which are mounted on an axle, a, the side beams of the frame converging toward each other to a point in front of the barrow-section.
At the front of the main frame A islocated a caster-wheel, B.
G represents the central section of the bar row, which consists of longitudinal diverging beams c c c, which are connected to each other by transverse beams (1 cl (2". Beamse are also attached to the front end of this central harrow-section, and converge rearwardly toward each other, thus providing at the front portion of this harrow-section a space in which the caster-wheel B may play.
To the side beams, 00, of the central harrowsection, G, are attached outwardly-projecting bars ff, the ends of which are provided with eyes. By having the beams 0 c diverge rearwardly from the front of the barrow-section, a space is provided for the supporting-wheels A, and the front portions of theside sections or wings, D, swing rearwardly when said side sections are elevated,so as not to interfere with the horses. The side sections, D D, are provided with longitudinal beams, which are parallel with the side beams, c c, of the central section, and said beams are connected to each other by transverse strips, in the usual manner. These side sections are also provided with hooked bars f, which engage with the bars f on the central section.
The carrying-frame A is provided near its rear portion with a drivers seat, E, and in front of said seat, so as to be within easy access of the driver, are located three upright bars, h It, adjacent to which are located rackbars i, which are adapted to engage with camlevers I, which are attached or pivoted to a transverse bar, it. The centrallever is for the purpose of elevating the central barrow-section, and a flexible connection extends from the same and is attached to the transverse bar d. Immediately in the rear of this cross-bar d the barrow-section O is provided with an npwardly-proj ecting bar, L, which is attached to the cross-bar d, and passes through a perforation, Z, in the carrying-frame A. This upright bar serves as a guide for the central barrow-section in raising and elevating the same. Flexible connections on are attached to the side levers, and pass from thence under pulleys m, which are swiveled to the edges of the carrying-frame, after which the cords or chains are carried slightly forward and attached to the side wings, D, as shown. It will be evident that when the levers are depressed the sections will be raised, and when raised will assume the position shown in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings.
To the forward portion of the main frame A, adjacent to the caster-wheel B, are secured two curved bars, 0 0, which are pivotally connected to the end of the main frame and rest upon a transverse pin, 0', which projects on each side of the end of the main frame. These bars, after being curved downwardly, are bent so as to form eyes, which engage with the eye of the king-bolt p, which connects the singletree 0 and the draft-tongue O with each other. The ends of the single-treeor draft-bar are connected to the ends of each of the harrowsections by chains g, which are attached'to the corners of the central harrow-section and to the side sections, as shown. The drafttongue O is rigidly connected to the single-tree by ICO means of bars 7", which are pivot-ally connected ing and lowering said barrow-section, subto to the single-tree and are hooked into projecstzmtially as set forth."
tions 8, attached to the side of the tongue. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in I claim 1 presence of two witnesses. i The combination with a main frame or car- T T riage supported at its front by a caster, of a STEPHEL HARTMAL' barrow section located beneath said main I \Vitnesses: frame or carriage, and provided at its front DANIEL F.
