This invention relates to catch basin assemblies which employ a gallery at one end to increase the capacity of water removal. The invention is more particularly directed to an improved form of gallery that may be precast and mated with complimentary curb inlet and well casing to provide an uninterrupted line of flow through the gallery into a well casing.
The use of galleries is, of course, well known and are commonly provided in combination with a catch basin or curb inlet. The chief function of the gallery is to receive water from the curbing in advance of the curb inlet to increase its intake capacity without increasing the size of the curb inlet itself. The normal size of a curb inlet is usually too small to handle a large volume of water, especially water that is rushing down a gutter line. Thus, the use of a gallery upstream of the curb inlet prevents overshooting.
In brief, this invention involves providing a precast gallery having a spout connection that fluidly communicates the gallery with a well casing through an opening in a curb inlet. In addition, the invention provides an improved gallery construction for uniting the gallery with curbing gutter and well casing.
One object of the present invention is to provide a gallery that may be precast separate from a curb inlet and later united with a curb inlet at the point of use.
Another object is to provide a precast gallery that may be keyed with a precast curb inlet and a well casing of generally conventional construction.
Another object is to provide a precast gallery having a base portion that projects out to receive and support the edge of a gutter.
A still further object is to provide a precast gallery of the type described and having a gallery passage that inhibits the collection of water within the gallery with improved drainage to a well casing.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent in view of the following detailed description.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like parts are identified by like reference numerals throughout the same:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of curb inlet and gallery assembly connected with a well casing and gutter;
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the curb inlet and gallery assembly shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged section of the gallery taken on lines 33 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is an enlarged section taken on lines 4-4 of FIG. 2; and
FIG. 5 is a perspective view of the precast gallery by itself.
Referring to FIG. 1 in particular, there is shown a preferred form of this invention in a combination of curb inlet and precast gallery 11 installed in a conventional curbing 12 with a gutter connection 13. Curb inlet 10 is of the type normally installed along the curb of a highway or street and is adapted to be set upon a concrete well 14 that communicates with a storm sewer or other means for disposing of surface drainage. Access is pro- 3,393,614 Patented July 23, 1968 vided to the storm sewer through a manhole which is normally closed by a cover 15.
Referring to FIG. 3, gallery 11 generally comprises a base 20, a rear wall 21 and an upper wall 22, each wall being formed integrally around a framework of reinforcing material 23. Base 20, rear wall 21 and upper wall 22 define a water passageway 24 having an essentially continuous and unobstructed opening beneath a nosing assembly 25. The bottom surface 26 of gallery passage 24 is sloped continuously downward in the direction of side wall 21 and also in the direction of the discharge end of the gallery. This insures proper drainage of the gallery.
One of the more important features of the invention resides in providing a spout 27, formed integrally with base 20, that projects from the discharge end of the gallery. Spout 27 extends through an opening 28 formed in the curb inlet. A second opening 28a, or keyway, is provided in well casing 14 to receive spout 27. This construction allows drainage to flow from the gallery directly into the well casing. Spout 27 also serves the purpose of keying the gallery to the curb inlet and well casing.
It is further contemplated that base 20 of gallery 11 should project out from the opening to water passageway 24 as to provide a ledge 29 for receiving the edge of gutter 13. In this way, the precast gallery as well as the catch basin and well casing 14 are keyed to the gutter and curbing.
Although a preferred form of the invention has been illustrated and described, various modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the attached claims, and each of such changes is contemplated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a curb inlet having an opening in one side, a precast gallery for receiving surface drainage and conducting said drainage through said opening, said gallery defining a water passageway and having a spout projecting from one end and extending through the opening of said curb inlet.
2. The precast gallery of claim 1, said gallery comprising integrally formed base, rear and upper walls defining said water passageway, an essentialy continuous opening to said passageway being provided between the upper end of said upper wall and base.
3. The precast gallery of claim 2 and further wherein said base projects out from said gallery on the side of the opening to said passageway for receiving and supportin g the edge of a gutter.
4. The precast gallery of claim 2 and further wherein said base defines the bottom surface of said gallery passageway, said bottom surface being sloped continuously downward in the direction of said side wall and the end from which said spout extends.
5. The precast gallery of claim 2 and further wherein said spout is integrally formed with said base at the low end of said passageway.
6. The curb inlet and gallery assembly of claim 1 and further comprising a well casing having a keyway formed in the upper end of one side to receive said spout.

Claims (1)

1. IN COMBINATION WITH A CURB INLET HAVING AN OPENING IN ONE SIDE, A PRECAST GALLERY FOR RECEIVING SURFACE DRAINAGE AND CONDUCTING SAID DRAINAGE THROUGH SAID OPENING, SAID GALLERY DEFINING A WATER PASSAGEWAY AND HAVING A SPOUT PROJECTING FROM ONE END AND EXTENDING THROUGH THE OPENING OF SAID CURB INLET.
