(Cl. 401--207) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLGSURE A replaceable paste wax transfer cloth with a loop for receiving a bulk strip of wood to act as an anchor between a paste wax applier lid and frame.
This invention relates to improvements in applying means, such as applicator tips, which when supplied with materials in paste or wax form, can coat these materials onto surfaces over which a flexible foraminous element, forming part of such a device, is moved with friction and light pressure.
More specifically, this invention relates to improvements in the securing means for the flexible foraminous components used as the restraining or applying means in such devices.
The lack of an easy means of replacing the flexible foraminous component may seriously hamper the utility of such a device, especially in the case of an applier for ordinary paste type floor wax.
This is because the flexible foraminous element itself may require changing more frequently than the wax, or other material, needs replenishing.
Such a situation may occur for various reasons. If a cloth be used as the actual element, the cloth may quickly become dirtied in use on floors which have not been perfectly cleaned before the wax or other material is applied. Or, the mesh of the cloth may be altered to suit alternating conditions pertaining at different times, requiring a thicker or thinner coating of wax to be applied at each application.
Flexible foraminous components for such devices have usually consisted of a cloth, which has usually been held by a clamp or band.
The installation or removal of such cloths has generally been an inconvenient procedure, especially in the case, such as occurs in the home, where the cloths have to be put on and taken olf with just the bare hands, without special equipment.
It is thus an object of the present invention to provide means whereby the flexible foraminous element may easily be installed, removed, or changed.
The applicant has found that by providing a positive anchoring means as part of the foraminous component itself, a flexible foraminous element may be put onto, and removed from paste wax appliers, without the use of any mechanical accessories whatever, and that the flexible foraminous component is securely held in the proper position on the applier.
The novel flexible foraminous component of the invention accordingly provides a unique positive anchoring means as part of the foraminous component itself, whereby it may be secured in position about the applying end of an applying means for paste type wax materials and the like.
A simple positive anchoring means may be provided by utilizing an anchoring loop or tab, into which anchoring pieces of solid material may be fitted. The bulk of such anchoring pieces then acts as a restraining means to prevent the removal of the anchor tab or loop, whenever the anchoring pieces are constrained by portions of an applying means preventing the removal of the anchoring pieces from the applying means.
Additional objects and advantages, if not specifically set out, will become apparent during the course of the following disclosure.
The invention accordingly comprises the novel means, exemplified in the following detailed disclosure and fairly coming within the scope of the accompanying claim, by which a positive anchoring means may be provided as part of the foraminous component itself, as well as devices or components of devices possessing the novel features or constructions or combination or relation of components or elements also exemplified in the following detailed disclosure and also fairly coming within the scope of the accompanying claim.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention, reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanynig non-limiting examples of embodiments of the invention, which have been chosen for illustrative purposes only, and which are shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a sectional view illustrating a preferred type of embodiment of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a partial sectional view illustrating another method of utilizing the same preferred type of embodiment of the invention.
Referring now to FIG. 1, there is shown a sectional view illustrating a preferred type of embodiment of the invention.
The numeral 102 designates a threaded tension post, which is secured in position in cross-brace 104 by fastening nut component 106. Cross-brace 104 is shown attached to peripheral support component 108 by means of rivets 109. The numeral 110 designates a peripheral flange which is preferably suitably flexible and resilient. The numeral 112 designates a flexible foraminous element having anchor tabs or loops 115, into which anchor pieces 111 may be fitted. The numeral 113 designates a second flexible foraminous component, similar to flexible foraminous component 112, but without any anchor tabs or loops. The numeral 119 designates a relief or chamfer along the bottom edges of backing component 120, to accommodate or provide clearance for anchor pieces 111 in the anchor loops 115. The numeral 122 designates a lid component, which is preferably glued to or otherwise suitably attached to backing component 120. The numeral 123 designates a clearance aperture, in components and 122, to allow the unhindered passage of fixed tension post 102. The numeral 125 designates openings in the top surface of lid component 122, to match and accommodate flange prongs 133, of bent handle end 132. The numeral 135 designates a clearance opening in bent handle end 132, to allow the unhindered passage of fixed tension post 102. The numeral 126 designates a wing nut having a circular washer-like base 128. The numeral 130 designates the bottom end of a relatively long handle component which is preferably 3 suitably attached to handle end 132, by rivets, or bent flanges, or otherwise.
The numeral 150 designates the space for the paste type or similar material to be dispensed or applied.
All of the components herein described may be fabricated out of any suitable material; however, in the present disclosure, post 102, nut 106, wing nut 126, handle end 132, peripheral support component 108, rivets 109, and cross-brace 104 have been intended to be shown fabricated out of any suitable metal or combination of metals, such as iron or steel or aluminum. Backing component 120, lid component 122, and handle end 130, and anchor pieces 111, have been intended to be shown fabricated out of a suitable wood or plywood. In quantity produc tion the use of suitable plastics for certain of the above components may be desirable or advantageous. Flexible flange component 110 is intended to be shown fabricated out of a suitable rubber or neoprene material. Flexible foraminous elements 112 and 113 are intended to be shown fabricated out of a suitable cotton, linen, rayon, or nylon material, of a mesh or count appropriate to the consistency of the material to be dispensed or applied. For looser paste type materials, a cotton or linen foraminous element may be desirable; for harder consistency wax materials a tricot weave type in rayon or nylon, of a looser mesh with larger openings, may be preferable.
The advantage of having an inner and an outer foraminous element in use on each applier at the same time, is that whenever it is desirable to change the mesh or weave of the outer foraminous element, or merely to replace a dirty outer foraminous element with a clean outer foraminous element, the wax or other paste type contents of the applier may be retained or held in the inner foraminous element, while the outer foraminous element is being changed, without the necessity of having to completely empty out the wax or paste type contents of the applier, in the process.
The inner flexible foraminous component should preferably always be of a very loose mesh with relatively large openings, in order to serve merely as a convenience to retain the contents in place while the outer flexible element is being replaced, without providing any unnecessary hindrance to the easy passage of material to the outer flexible foraminous element.
The method of utilization is further described in that part of this description following FIG. 2.
Referring now to FIG. 2, there is shown a partial sectional view illustrating another method of utilizing the same preferred type of embodiment of the invention illustrated in FIG. 1.
The numeral 202 designates a threaded post, which is secured in position on the top surface of backing component 220 by means of attaching plate 240 and attaching nails 242. The numeral 241 designates a relief or dimple in attaching plate 240 to provide suitable clearance for the end base 205 of threaded post 202. The numeral 208 designates a rigid peripheral flange, which extends above and all about the top surface of backing component 220 as shown. The numeral 210 designates a peripheral flange which is preferably suitably flexible and resilient. The numeral 212 designates a flexible foraminous element having anchor tabs or loops 215, into which anchor pieces 211 may be fitted. The numeral 213 designates a second flexible foraminous component similar to flexible foraminous component 212, but without any anchor tabs or loops. The numeral 222 designates a separate top component, which is primarily intended to provide a securing means for the anchor pieces and anchor tabs, in a manner similar to that provided by the lid component 122 of FIG. 1. The numeral 223 designates a clearance aperture, in component 222, to allow the unhindered passage of fixed post 202. The numeral 225 designates openings through the top component 222, to match and accommodate flange prongs 233, of bent handle end 232. The numeral 235 designates a clearance opening in bent handle end 232, to allow the unhindered passage of fixed post 202. The numeral 226 designates a wing nut having a circular washer-like base 228. The numeral 230 designates the bottom end of a relatively long handle component which is preferbaly suitably attached to handle end 232, by rivets or bent flanges or otherwise. The numeral 237 designates a relief or dimple in rigid peripheral projecting flange 208, to provide clearance as a sort of countersink for the head of the attaching nail 233.
The components shown in and described in connection with FIG. 2 may be fabricated out of materials similar to the materials utilized for the fabrication of the embodiments and devices shown in and described in connection with FIG. 1.
In order to use a foraminous component or element of the type shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the anchor pieces previously referred to, and previously described and illustrated, are inserted in the anchor loops, and the loops are then folded over into place, and the lid or top component, reference 122 of FIG. 1 and 222 of FIG. 2, is then fastened into place.
The anchor loops then hold the foraminous component or element securely in position, since with the anchor pieces in place, the anchor loops cannot be pulled out from under the lid or top component.
In order to fill an applier of the type shown in FIG. 1 with paste or wax type materials, the lid is removed, and chunks of paste or wax materials are dropped into the space bounded by the components 110, 112 (and 113), and by component 120.
In order to change the outer flexible foraminous component 112, it is only necessary to remove lid components and 122,. and to hold the inner component 113 in position by holding diagonally opposite corners of the inner component113, and thus the entire component 113, in position as shown in FIG. 1, and to then lift the entire frame, including the inner flexible foraminous component, out of the existing component 112, and to set it down in position inside a new or different component 113; and this may be done without removing the paste or Wax contents from the inner component 113. Of course, an inner component, 113, need not be employed, except that in changing from one component 112 to another component 112, it is then necessary to transfer the paste or wax contents from one component 112, to the other component 112, each time.
In order to fill an applier of the type shown in FIG. 2 with paste or wax materials, it is necessary to remove the flexible foraminous components, to then put a quantity of paste or wax material directly onto (or into) the flexible foraminous components, and to then set the remainder of the applier into position with respect to the flexible foraminous components or elements, and to then secure the flexible components or elements in place.
While certain changes may be necessary or desirable for commercial production and marketing, such changes are believed to be beyond the scope necessary to a complete disclosure of the present invention.
Since certain changes may be made without departing from the scope of the invention herein involved, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
1. In an applying means for paste type wax materials and the like, having an elongated hollow supporting structure means open at one end with a flexible flange means mounted on the periphery of said supporting structure and extending beyond the open end, and having a constraining means adapted to mate with a portion of said structure means, and having a flexible foraminous means overlying and enclosing the said open end of the said structure means having the said peripheral flange means, the improvement for securing the flexible foraminous means, said improvement comprising, anchor tab means attached to the aforesaid flexible foraminous means, and anchor piece means adapted to operate with the said anchor tab means, whereby, upon the tab means being trapped between the aforesaid supporting structure means and the aforesaid constraining means, pressure of the anchor piece means exerted against the aforesaid constraining means and the aforesaid supporting structure means, prevents the removal of the said anchor tab means from a position between the aforesaid supporting structure means and the aforesaid constraining means, and prevents the removal of the aforesaid flexible foraminous means from the aforesaid supporting structure means.
