Be it known that I, HENRY PATTISON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at St. John, in the county of St. John, Province of New Brunswick, Dominion of Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Presses, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figurel is anisometrical perspective view of my mproved press, represented as mounted on the bench and in position for use; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same, detached from the bench; Fig. 3, a vertical transverse section of thedisk or bed-die shown in Fig.2, detached from its supporting-shalt,showing,also, the blank resting thereon and the retaining ring or binder in place over said blank; Fig. 4, a vertical longitudinal section of the formers or rotary dies, a portion of the shaft on which they are mounted being shown in side elevation; Fig. 5, sectional views of covers made or formed on the press, the covers being represented as inverted; and Fig. 6 enlarged views of the ring or binder used on the disk.

My invention relates to that class of presses or machines which are employed by tinners in the manufacture of tin or sheet-metal covers for pots, pails, &c.; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the 'parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and daimed, the object being to provide a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement Will be readily understood by all conversant With such matters from the following explanation:
In the drawings, A represents the body or bed of the machine, which is adapted to be fastened to the bench B by the screws Mounted atone end of the bed A there is a vertical standard, 0, secured thereto by the nut and bolt m, and journaled in said standard there is a crank -shaft, D, mounted in suitable boxes, fb, and provided With a spring, o, adapted to elevate the inner end of said shalt when the pressure on the same is removed. A vertical standard, E, rendered adjustable by the slot (1 and nut and bolt :12, is also mounted on said bed, and journaled vertically therein is a shaft, H, carrying at its upper end the horizontally-arranged disk or beddie K. This disk is dish-shaped or hasacavity on its upper side, being provided therein witha series of rabbets or shoulders, h, corresponding nearly in contour, but obversely,with the cover to be formed. In Fig. 2 this disk is shown as provided With a shoulder or rabbet.j, which may be omitted, if dcsired. A series of rotary dies or formers, 15 Z9 2, are fixed on the shaft D, being adapted to work in connection With the disk or die K. A lever, J, provided With a projection, z, has one of its ends jointed to the top of the standard 0, and its other provided with a rod, L,which passes downwardly through the bench B, and is connected with the treadle M, the projection z being adapted to engage the box f and force the dies il y z down onto the disk K when said treadle is depressed, the spring v raising said box and dies when the treadle is released. v
Attached to the standard C there is a bracket, k, and mounted on ahorizontally-arranged stub-shaft, 72, in said bracket there is a small wheel or roller, w, disposed beneath the edge of the disk K, and slightly in front of the die .2, the object of said wheel or roller being to support the side or edge of said disk and prevent it from being broken by the pressure of the rotary dies or formers t Z y z.
A ring or binder, N, of tin, provided with adownwardly-projecting annular flange, a, is employed to keep the blank G,from which the cover is made, in proper position on the disk K, and also to enable said blank to be drawn in from the outer edges toward the center of said disk when pressure is applied and the dies are revolved t0 forcethe blank down into the cavity of the bed-die, the lubricous nature of the tin permitting the blank to slip readily under the ring. The ring N also serves as a cushion to prevent the die or dies on the shaft D from injuring the blank or cover as it lies between the face of said die or dies and the metal from whieh tho cover is made when pressure is brought to boar upon the latter in rolling it into shape.
In the use of my improvemont, tho treadlo M being olovatod, tho circular tin b1ank G, from which the cover is to be made, is p1acod on the disk or bed-die K, the binder or ringN being plaeed over its edges to keep it in position and prevent it from injury, as describod. (Seo Fig. 3.) The treadlo is then depressed and the shaft D turned, oausing tho dies on said shaft to press on the biank Gand force it into the disk'or bed-die K, thereby forming tho cover in a mannor which Will be readily obvions withont a more explicit description.
The odges of the shoulders or rabbots h in the face of the disk K are angular, but the edgos or peripherios of the dies 25 Z 9 on the shaft D are slightly roundod, so that said lastnamed dies do not press the sheet metal blank Ginto tho bed-dio to make it conform prooisoly With said rabbets, but bond it in curvos over them, as shown at 3 thereby preventing tho shoot from cracking or breaking under the pressure to which it is subjeoted and making a more desirable cover. By not bringing all parts of the shoot into contact With the beddio tho cover is also prevonted fro1n being as badly soarrod or scratohedas it would be if pressed into the angles of the rabbets h.
A shoulder or rabbet, j, is formod near the outer edge or periphory of the disk K, tho die z being adapted to press the edge of the blank, or oiroular shoot of metal G, from wh-ieh tho cover is formed, into the same, and thereby produce a cover having a downwardly-projecting annular fiange, r, and rim 1), the fiange being adaptod to pass clown inside the top of the pot or othor vessel on whioh tho cover is used, and thus keep tho cover in position on the vossol, this feature of the invention being deemed of especial value in machines of this charaoter.
It will be obvious that one or more dies may be employed on the shaft D, and that the beddio and also the dies or formors on said shaft are designod to be changed to correspond with tho work to be performed or style of cover to be made, several of the difi'erent styles for which the machine is adapted being shown in Fig. 5.
Having chus expiained my invention, what I daim is 1. In a press for making oovers substantially such as described, the bed A, provided With tho standards C E, tho shaft H, provided with tho disk K, tho shaft D, provided with the dies Hg 2, the vortically-movablo boxes f and 6, for supporting said shaft D, tho lever.
J, provided With the rod L and troadle N, and the spring v, oombined and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
2. The disk K, provided with the rabbet or die or disk K, for proventing tho die or dies on tho shaft D from injuring tho blank or cover and to permit it to be drawn towardthe center of tho die K as it is formod, substantially as desoribod. 4
