No. 600,839 1 Claim. (Cl. 30-201) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The adjustable auxiliary comb has the two sides of its open frame slideable on angular shelves formed on either side of the body of the clipper. The cover portion of the clipper forms a channel with each shelf when it engages the body of the clipper. The back of the frame has an upright member which engages with a control member on the outside of the cover for lateral sliding and raising or lowering by threading.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION This invention relates to the class of hair clippers with adjustable auxiliary combs as exemplified by U.S. Patent 3,237,304.
In this prior patent a generally conventional electric hair clipper is combined with an auxiliary comb positioned exteriorly to the combs of the hair clipper and supported by an elongated frame.
The frame includes a pair of rods slideably mounted in a pair of tubular members pivotally mounted on each side of the clipper body and a cross piece between the rods. In another form, the open auxiliary comb frame is pivotally mounted on a U-shaped fixed frame and has a threadable member extending between the backs of the two frames so that rotation of the threadable member causes lateral displacement of the comb frame while movement of the member raises or lowers the comb frame with respect to the main frame.
Although the two embodiments described in the prior patent are operative and effective, they are not adaptable to certain types of conventional hair clippers where the space provided is differently arranged Within the body shell.
One object of the present invention is to provide an auxiliary comb which can be attached to a conventional electric clipper with less modification of the original than shown in the prior patent.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION This invention comprises the combination of a conventional electric hair clipper and an adjustable auxiliary comb supported by a frame member. The frame member comprises a pair of lateral rods terminating at one end in means for attaching to the auxiliary comb and at the other end in a cross piece. The body of the clipper has on each side another shelf or ledge which is flat but angular upon which the side rods of the frame rest. The cover fits onto the body to form the outer shelves into channels. The middle portion of the back cross piece of the frame member is connected to a finger-manipulable control means located on the exterior side of the cover which permits the user to both slide the frame along the ledges and to tilt it by threadable means. In this manner, a minimum of space or modification is required to use the auxiliary comb in its frame with the conventional electric hair clipper.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is an exploded elevation view of one embodiment of this invention.
FIG. 2 is an exploded plan view of the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a side elevation of the assembled embodiments illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2 showing the auxiliary comb extended outward and above the top edge of the main or original combs 32.
FIG. 4 is a similar view as in FIG. 3 but showing the auxiliary comb in contact with the main comb and of the same height.
FIG. 5 is a partial plan view of the assembly of a variation of the first embodiment.
FIG. 6 is a partial sectional elevation of still another embodiment of this invention.
SPECIFIC DESCRIPTION OF SEVERAL EXAMPLES The various illustrated embodiments differ primarily at the control end, the frame, body, and combs being substantially the same.
Referring now to FIGS. l-4, the completely assembled device 11 comprises a conventional electric hair clipper 31 having a body 34 (which supports and contains the mechanism for the clipper, not illustrated for purposes of clarity) and a cover 22 which seats on the body portion. Clipper 31 has conventional combs 32 but is provided on either side of its body 34 with a ledge comprising two angular flat sections 35 (38) and 36 (39) meeting at point 37 (40). Point 37 need not be sharp and can be rounded. These side ledges or shelves 35-37-36 thus provide means for sliding support and also tilting as desired on auxiliary comb frame 12. Frame 12 comprises side rods 14 and 15 with a front cross portion 16a supporting auxiliary combs 13 and a rear cross portion 16. Engagement of cover 22 and body 31 forms channels from the shelves.
As shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, if the user loosens threadable member 20, he may readily slide the frame member 12 outward so that its side rods 14, 15 rest on ledges 38 and 35. In FIG. 4 the frame member is pulled back and held in position by threading of member 20 and rests on ledges 39 and 36. The spring 21 serves to normally pull the back of the frame down and thus raise the comb 12.
In the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 5, the control element is a block 51 with a hole 52 for accommodating a vertical adjusting screw 53 similar to 20 and a hole 54 for accommodating a lateral connecting screw 55 similar to 18. In other respects the device is the same as in FIG. 4.
The embodiment illustrated in FIG. 6 differs, however, in that the frame member no longer has a solid projection upward but rather has rear means for engaging a vertical threadable member 120. Mounted on shaft a is a member 119. Member 119 has engaging projection 11% which goes into positioning slots on the face of the clipper and on either side of slot 129. Shaft 120a threadably engages a registering opening 115a in the middle of the rear cross portion 16 of the frame holding the auxiliary comb. A spring 121 is provided as in the other embodiments so that there would be a. normal tendency to push the back of the frame downward.
