(Ci. 292-465) This invention relates to locks in general, but more specifically to a heavy duty door lock preferably used on fire doors, panic doors, schools and used on public buildings.
Broadly the invention comprises a lock particularly constructed for panic or fire doors formed with a pair of bevel-s, one positioned on the opening handle and the second on the lock bar. It will be noticed that the bevel on the lock bar is formed with a vertical portion at the lower extremity of the bevel. This is to permit the device to remain positively opened when the operating handle is in the down position. The flat portion on the bevel renders the device readily usable as a panic lock since, when in the open position, the spring on the lock bar becomes compressed and urges a stronger engagement between the flat portion and the bevel on the operating arm to retain the lock in the open position.
The main object of the invention is therefore the provision of a lock as set forth which can be used on fire doors, schools, or as a panic lock.
Another important object is the provision of a lock as set forth which is not encased so that all moving parts are readily accessible and if used in an extremely dusty room, it can easily be kept clean.
Another important object is that the device provides a position, on the locking mechanism where the device cannot accidently fall in the lock position.
Other apparent objects are the provision of a lock as set forth which is strong and durable, easy to operate and of comparatively low manufacturing cost.
With these and other objects in view that may appear as the description proceeds the invention consists in the novel arrangement of cooperating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming part of this application and in which:
FIGURE 1, is a front elevational view of a lock constructed in accordance with the present invention.
FIGURE 2, shows the device attached to a door and frame in the locked position, and
FIGURE 3, is a top plan view of the locking arm.
Referring more in detail to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, it will be seen the invention consists of a lock formed with an operating handle pivotally secured at one of its extremities 5 by conventional means and an operating handle 6 at the opposite extremity. The travel distance of the locking arm is limited by means of an elongated bracket 7, the extremities of which straddle said arm and are secured in position as illustrated. A wedge or bevel 8 is positioned on the bottom side of said arm.
3,385,621 Patented May 28, 1968 The locking arm comprises a bar 9 formed with a wedge or bend 10 positioned so that the apex of the first mentioned bevel engages the slope thereof to cause said arm to travel from a fixed position to the left side to disengage the lock. One extremity of the bar or bolt travels through a U-shaped bracket 11 while the opposite extremity engages into a box 12 having an open end and a closed end 13. Within said box is a compression spring 14.
A stud 15 engages the inner extremity of said bar 9 and protrudes through the closed end of the box and is provided with retaining nuts 16 to retain said bar in position.
In operation the operating handle is depressed so that the bevel 8 engages the bevel 10 to cause the locking bar to retract. When the apex of the wedge 8 engages the flat portion 17 it retains the locking bar in the open position until they are disengaged, at which time the compression spring 14 urges the locking bar forward to set the device in the locked position.
It is believed that the construction and advantages have been fully set forth and that further detailed description is not required.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been set forth, it is to be understood that minor modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows.
I claim:
1. A lock as set forth comprising an operating handle pivotally secured at one of its extremities, an operating handle at the opposite extremity, an elongated bracket to limit the scope of travel of said arm, a projection on the underside of said arm having a surface thereon normal to said arm, a locking bar having one of its extremities slidably mounted in a bracket and its opposite extremity encased in a box having an open end and a closed end, a stud secured to the inner end of said bar and extending through the closed end of said box, nuts to prevent said stud from being drawn through said box a compression spring mounted over said stud to urge said bar in a forward position when the operating lever is released and a bevel on said bar to cooperate with said projection to cam said locking bar to retracted position and bevel formed with a vertical section to positively engage said surface and retain said lock in retracted position when the operating lever is drawn against said locking bar.

Claims (1)

1. A LOCK AS SET FORTH COMPRISING AN OPERATING HANDLE PIVOTALLY SECURED AT ONE OF ITS EXTREMITIES, AN OPERATING HANDLE AT THE OPPOSITE EXTREMITY, AN ELONGATED BRACKET TO LIMIT THE SCOPE OF TRAVEL OF SAID ARM, A PROJECTION ON THE UNDERSIDE OF SAID ARM HAVING A SURFACE THEREON NORMAL TO SAID ARM, A LOCKING BAR HAVING ONE OF ITS EXTREMITIES SLIDABLY MOUNTED IN A BRACKET AND ITS OPPOSITE EXTREMITY ENCASED IN A BOX HAVING AN OPEN END AND A CLOSED END, A STUD SECURED TO THE INNER END OF SAID BAR AND EXTENDING THROUGH THE CLOSED END OF SAID BOX, NUTS TO PREVENT SAID STUD FROM BEING DRAWN THROUGH SAID BOX A COMPRESSION SPRING MOUNTED OVER SAID STUD TO URGE SAID BAR IN A FORWARD POSITION WHEN THE OPERATING LEVER IS RELEASED AND A BEVEL ON SAID BAR TO COOPERATE WITH SAID PROJECTION TO CAM SAID LOCKING BAR TO RETRACTED POSITION AND BEVEL FORMED WITH A VERTICAL SECTION TO POSITIVELY ENGAGE SAID SURFACE AND RETAIN SAID LOCK IN RETRACTED POSITION WHEN THE OPERATING LEVER IS DRAWN AGAINST SAID LOCKING BAR.
