COMBINED HANDLE AND HOLDER FOR BRUSHES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,476, dated March 23, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN BUCK, of Fleming, in the county of Centre and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Handles and Holders for Brushes; and I do here by declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap-- pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,which form part of this specification.

My invention has for its object to provide an improved and combined handle and holder for brushes, and for receiving and holding straw, or other similar or fibrous material, to form a brush or broom and my improvements consist, essentially, of a pair of tongs of peculiar construction, the two semi-cylindrical jaws of which are adapted to be closed upon each other by the handles of said tongs, to secure between the same one end of the bunch of feathers or other material of which the brush or broom is to be composed, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of my device; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section thereof, and Figs. 3 and 4 detail views.

Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate like parts.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the upper, and B the lower, jaw of my improved device, which are adapted to be opened and closed by the handles 0 D. The twojaws A B are of a semi-cylindrical shape in crosssection, and the side edges are preferably beveled at a, so that one jaw laps over the opposite jaw when the two are closed together, as fully shown in Fig. 4;

The jaws A B are each provided with inwardly-projecting collars or tighteners I), which, when the clamps are closed together, bind the feathers or other fibrous material somewhat like a band, which binding causes the feathers, broom-sage, or the like to form a head within the cylindrical chamber, which head, being much larger than the gripped portion, prevents the bundle or stems thereof from coming out. As indicated, when the jaws A B are closed together, they form a cylindrical receptacle, E, for receiving or holding the end of a bunch of feathers, broom-sage, straw, or other fibrous material of which the brush or broom is composed.

The rear ends of the handles 0 D are provided with screw threads, upon which is adapted to be secured a screw-nut, ring, or collar, F, to close and hold the jaws A B upon the material which is to form the brush or broom.

G is a bunch of feathers or broom-sage.

I do not wish to confine myself to the specific construction herein shown and described, as it is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and such changes and modifications arehereby contemplated by me.

The advantages of my invention will be readily apparent without a more minute description, inasmuch as loose feathers, straw, 850., may be bunched together and secured within the clamping-jaws to form avery handy and efficient brush or broom at a mere nominal cost, the worn or broken particles being readily replaced at any time.

When it is desired to replace the bunch of feathers, broom-sage, or the like, the nut on the end of the handle is simply unscrewed, when the jaws open and the new bunch replaced. The handles are then brought together, which closes the jaws, thus clamping the brush material when the instrument is again ready for use.

It will be observed that the handles form the levers for closing the jaws on the brush material with great force.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- The combination of the semi-cylindrical jaws A B, provided with lever-handles C D, having screw-threads upon their rear ends to receive a nut to hold the handles or jaws together in a closed position, said jaws also having inner projecting tighteners or collar, wherebythefibrousmaterialissecurelybound, substantially as described.
