STEAM-ACCUMULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,237, dated March 16, 1886 Application filed April S, i895.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK TWOHIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Accumulators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a description of the same, and of the manner of constructing and'using the invention, in such full, clear, concise, and exact terms as to enable any person skilled in the art to which it appertains to construct and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw,- ings, forming a part of this specification, the principle of the invention being herein eX- plained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other` inventions.

A is the accumulator.
B is a pipe leading from a power-transmitting engine and emptying exhaust-steam into the accumulator. Said pipe is provided with stop-cock b.
C is apipe leading from a pumping-engine, and also empties exhaust-steam into the accumulator. Said pipe is provided with stopcoek' c.
In the top of the accumulator are inserted the two steam-heat pipes D, connected with the steam-radiators, and respectively provided with stop-cocks d. Said pipes D eX- tend downward a considerable distance into the accumulator, the object of which is hereinafter explained. A pipe, E, passes into the accumulator at any convenient point in the top and extends downward to a point, e, below the horizontal line of the dischargemouths of the pipes B G, and is designed for the escape of surplus steam. Said pipe E is provided at a point external to the accumulator with the back-pressure valve e', by which surplus steam escapes into the open air. Said valve, being loaded, acts asasafetyvalve.
F is an aperture through the bottom of the accumulator, through which the water condensed from the steam discharges into the basin G. Said basin is connected by a pipe, H, with the surface-trap I.
Serial No. 161,563. (No model J is a conical cover placed over aperture F and raised slightly from the bottom of the ac cumulator on the lugs f, thus providing a space, f, between the bottom ot' said cover and the aperture.
K is a steanrgage by which the pressure of steam in the accumulator is shown.
To obviate pulsations of steam in the accumulator is the design of the extension of the heatpipes D, whereby steam packs about the depending ends d of said pipes, said packed steam acting as an elastic cushion to break said pulsations, thereby securing constancy of pressure through pipes D.
Pipe E is made to depend so far as is described toward the bottom of the accumulator in order that the pressure needed to force the steam through pipes D may not be too soon interfered with by the operation of the said surplus-steam escape-pipe.
Although, as stated, the primary object of my invention is to use exhaust-steam for heating purposes, yet it may be also used as a convenient and successful water-catcher; also,
if no accumulation of steam for heating purposes is desired, the accumulator, in conne@ tion with the dischargepipe E, affords a convenient medium of conveying exhaust-steam into the open air, in which case the backpressure valveis unloaded. The cover J acts as a breaker to the pulsations of the ingushing steam, so that the water in basin Gis kept from splashing.
What, therefore, I claim is#-y l.l The combination, with a steam-accumulator provided with one or more inlet-pipes and one or more outlet-pipes, the latter depending within the accumulator, of a surplussteam discharge-pipe depending within the accumulator and having its receiving-mouth on a horizontal plane below the horizontal plane of the mouth or mouths 0f said inlet pipe or pipes, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a steam-accumulator provided with one or more steam-inlet pipes and also provided with one or more steam-discharge pipes located at the top of the accumulator, of an independent surplussteam escape-pipe depending within the acculocated below the mouths of said steam-discharge pipesiand also below the discharging end of said steam inlet pipe or pipes, substantially1 as set forth.
3. The combination, with steam-accumulator A, provided with one or more supplypipes and one or more discharge-pipes, the latter having their receiving-mouths depending below the accumulator-top and above the horizontal plane of the discharge-mouths of the supply-pipes, ofthe surplus-steam escapepipe E,depending within the accumulator and having its open end elocated below the mouth of said supply-pipes and nearer the bottom of the accumulator, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with a steam-accun1u lator, ofa water-basin located at the bottom of the accumulator, and a cover located over the basin and forming horizontal water-pas- PATRICK TWOHIG.
