SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,056, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed October 22, 1885. Serial No. 180,638.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Isaac FORBES GAR- NER and WILLIAM B. HILL, citizens of the United States, residing at Carthage, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Limekilns; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in limekilns; and it consists in the construction hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A indicates the kiln, consisting of the base B and input 0, the latter having the fire-brick lining f. At the front and rear two furnaces, E E, are located in the base B, having the fire-boxes c c, the ash-pit e e, and the fireentrances e c through the kiln-walls. The openings to the furnaces have ways or guides a a for sliding furnace-doors, and the pits have the usual doors, a a. On each side of the furnace-doors, and below them, are made air-fines c 0. These flues pass through the base of the kiln and enter the furnaces above and below the fire-box, as seen in Fig. I. These fines are closed on the outside by suitable sliding doors or dampers. The bottoms of the fire-boxes have a slight flare upward at b b, which narrows the entrances e" 0 and above such flares are located in the top of the furnaces the cross-passages b b. The input 0 of the kiln increases in taper downward to the bottom of the entrances c 6". Just below this point the taper ceases, and an enlarged chamber is formed in the base of the kiln. to each other and a flaring bottom. The four sides of the bottom converge toward the center with a downward flare, forming a chute.
Three of the sides of the bottom are formed 5 of the base of the kiln, and the fourth of metal, there being an opening, 7, where they terminate at the bottom. The side f comes to the middle line of the kiln, (see Fig. II) at which point is placed a metal bar, f and from which the wall f drops vertically. Opposite the side f is the metal side G. Metal plates 9, with strengtheningribs g, are placed with their lower ends, resting on the bar f and their lengths supported on transverse rods h, secured in the kiln. On these plates 9 are placed strips h, of sheet metal, side by side, leaving the opening f at the bottom. To the under side of the plates 9 are secured rabbeted plates or guides k, which hold the comes in contact with the products of combustion from the furnaces, and, being converted into lime, passes still downward and is withdrawn at the openingf into a cart or other receptacle introduced at the opening L.
Air is admitted to the fire, either below 8f) through the fines c, or above through the fiues c, and these can be regulated to throw it at different points, as theflues are independent of one another. The air entering the fines 0' passes up through the fire, in 0 creasing the same. The air entering the lines 0 comes in contact with the flame above the fuel, and passing with the flame into the chambers b induces better combustion. This action is facilitated by the flares b, which are 5 under the chambers 1).
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is 1. A limekiln having the air flues c 0 above and below the fire-box, and the cham- 10o her 6 above such box, as set forth.
