UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM B. DORWARD, OF MARION, OHIO.
OIL-CUP FOR SKATE AND OTHER JOURNALS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,822, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed July '25, 1885. Serial No. 172,639. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. DORWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cups for Skate and other Journals, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
The invention relates to oil-cups for skates, 820.; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction and arrangement of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of the heel of a roller-skate with my oiler in place, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the oiling attachment.
(1 represents the foot-piece of a roller-skate, and a the truck-frame, of any of the usual or The axle b extends through the truck-frame in the usual manner, and the latteris provided with an oilhole, b, by which oil is applied to the axle and from this to the wheels.
In this device, which is in common use, so little oil can be applied at one time that the skater has frequently to apply more, and if using the skates any length of time must carry an oil can in the pocket at the risk of its leaking upon the clothes. I avoid this as follows:
0 represents a small oil cup or receptacle closed by a screw-cap, c, and formed with a hollow shank or stem, 0 of proper size to enter the oil-hole in the truck-frame. To the shank c" is secured one end of a curved spring-clip, d, which encircles the lower side of the truckframe, and has on its free end a small nib, d, which engages a similar depression, (1", in the truck, as in Fig. 1.
This cup, though quite small, holds sufficient oil to supply what is required for several hours use ofthe skates, and is readily attached to any skate with no preparation, except the formation of the depression d".
The attachment is quickly sprung off when cleaning the skate, and is small and light, not interfering in any way with the use of the article. One is of course applied to each truck.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the skate box or frame a, formed with the oil-hole b and depression d on opposite sides, of the cup 0 and its hollow shank c and the spring 01, secured thereto at one end and formed with a nib, d, at the other, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereofI afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM B. DORVVARD.
