CLOTHES-LINE REEL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,799, dated March 9, 1886.

Application filed May 12, 1884. Serial No. 131,160. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DAVID W. TRAVIS, a citizen of the United Statesresiding at Athens, in the county of Greene and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Reels, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of the metal spider for the support of the reel-arms, constructed with roller-brackets and fitted with rollers, in combination with a circular rim or way attached to the pivot-socket of the spider-pivot, by which the weight of the reel and its load Inay-be carried 011 the rollers, for the relief of the pivot from wear in the step, and to enable the reel to turn more easily by the wind, which facilitates the drying of the clothes and renders the reel much more lasting, the essential feature of the invention being the arrangement of the roller-pivots and the rail so that rain and snow will be effectually shed off, for their protection from freezing together and breaking, as hereinafter fully described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is partly a side elevation of my improved clotlies-line reel, and Fig. 2 is a plan View.

I construct the spider-arms a of the vertical spindle b, on which the wood or other reelarms a are mounted, with brackets (1, projecting downward from the outer ends, and pivotrollers e in said brackets, and construct the pivot-socket], which is fitted on the top of post 9, for the pivot 12 to turn in, with a circular way or rail, h, of the requisite size, for the rollers e to run on for the support of the reel, for relieving the spindle-step of said weight; also for enabling the reel to turn more freely by the wind, and also for more substantial support of the reel-arms on a broader base than when carried solely by the spindle, making a much more durable reel.

By the contrivance of the reel to turn more freely by the wind the clothes are less liable to be damaged in a strong wind, and they dry much faster.

The rail h is cast together with arms 2', connecting it with the socketf. These arms support the rail at some distance from the socketplate, with spaces between, so that the rain and snow will not lodge, which, together with the rollers pivoted under the spider-arms, effectually protect the device from collecting snow and ice and freezing up.

\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a clothes-line reel, the metal spider for the support of the reel-arms, constructed with roller-brackets in which the rollers are suspended under the arms,in combination with the pivot-socket having a railway for the rollers of the reel-spider supported on arms, whereby both the rail and the roller-pivots shed the snow and the rain and are protected from ice, substantially as described.
