1 Claim.'(Cl. 77-7) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device extending the effective length of a hand drill consisting of a tubular member holding in spaced relation 7 The invention herein relates to an improvement in a rigid extension attachment member to be used in connection with a hand drill to support an extended head or drilling portion of such drill.
It is desirable at times to have means for extending the head of a drill for some distance to elongate the effective length of a drill to permit overhead drilling from a floor standing position. The invention herein represents substantial improvement over extension drills in providing greater rigidity in the tool and more flexibility in drilling.
It is an object of this invention herein therefore to provide rigid readily detachable means arranged and constructed to hold in rigid extended operating position the head or drilling portion of a hand drill.
This and other objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:
FIG. 1 is a top plan view of the device herein;

FIG. 3 is a fragmentary view on an enlarged scale showing a portion of the device in vertical section;
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary view on an enlarged scale showing a detail of construction in vertical section; and
FIG. .5 is a view in vertical section taken on line 5--5 of FIG. 2 as indicated.
With reference to the drawings, a device embodying the invention herein is indicated generally by the character 10.
In connection with the device is a hand drill 11 of a conventional design comprising a housing 12 having a handle 14 equipped with a trigger switch 16. Extending forwardly of said housing 12 is a cylindrical neck portion 18 having a projecting flange 18a of reduced diameter.
Said housing contains therein a conventional motor not here shown from which projects through said neck portion a drive shaft 23.
With reference to FIG. 4, the head portion 20 of said drill 11 is shown in its normal operating position connected to the housing portion 12. Said head portion is here shown formed as a right-angled member and has mounted thereon a chuck 21 which in a conventional manner will be driven by the shaft 42 which has a portion projecting from the angled neck portion 20a of said head portion 20. Said shaft carries at its free end a hexagonal nut 41 which is received within a corresponding pocket 25b of a coupling or connecting member 25 which in turn is tapped at 25a to be threaded onto the free end of the drive shaft 23.
Said housing 12 and said head portion 20 are clamped together in operating position by a clamping member 37 here indicated as being a split cylindrical clamp having spaced pairs of aligned ears 37a and 37b at either end thereof, which ears are drawn together and secured by bolts 39. Said clamp receives therein the adjacent end portions of said housing and head portions. For drilling purposes a drill bit will be secured in the chuck 21 in a customary manner. It will also be understood that the motor within the housing 12 will be connected to -a conventional source of power.
When it is desired to extend the drill head for some distance, the ears 37b of said clamp 37 will be loosened and the head portion 20 will be removed therefrom; and at the same time the hexagonal nut 41 will be Withdrawn from said connecting member 25.
An extension drive member 28 will next be mounted having a hexagonal nut 280 at one end thereof to be disposed within the socket 25b and at its other end has a threaded portion 28b to be threaded into the tapped end 30a of a connecting or coupling member 30. Said connecting member 30 has a socket 30b to receive therein said hexagonal nut 41 to complete a driving connection between said head portion 20 and said housing 12.
Just prior to placing said hexagonal nut 41 into said socket 30b, a rigid elongated member 35 here shown as being tubular in form is disposed over said drive shaft 28 to have its end portion 35b received Within the adjacent end portion of said clamp 37 to be secured thereto by tightening said clamp thereabout.
The other end portion 35a of said tubular member 35 is enlarged to receive therein the adjacent end portion 20a of said head portion 20. A narrow split clamp 43 is placed about said end portion and the spaced ears 43a at the free ends of said clamp are drawn together by the bolt 39 to secure said tubular member and head portions together.
Said tubular member 35 may be of any desirable length permitting overhead drilling to be done very readily from a fioor standing position and placing no more appreciable strain upon the operator than is experienced in operating this hand drill in its normally unlengthened condition. The tubular member 35 is readily installed or removed in a matter of but a few minutes. As is obvious, the invention herein permits the use of normal drill bits secured directly in the chuck.
Thus it is seen that I have provided a simple effective and readily useable means for extending the operative length of a hand drill of a conventional variety.
It will of course be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts, without departing from the scope of applicants invention which, generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the object above set forth, in the parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
1. A device extending the effective length of a hand drill having in combination,
a'dn'll housing containing driving means having an extended threaded end portion,
a drill head and chuck having an end portion detachable from said housing and said driving means, said drill head having operating means extending therefrom having an extended non-round end portion,
a rigid elongated tubular member of substantially uniform diameter holding said drill housing and drill head in spaced relation and having its respective end portions clamped to the respective end portions of said drill housing and said drill head,
a drive shaft within said tubular member extending substantially the full length thereof, said drive shaft having a non-round end portion at one end thereof and having a threaded portion at the other end thereof,
a pair of interchangeable connecting members at either end of said drive shaft, one of said connecting members having a non-round recess at one end thereof to receive said non-round end of said drive shaft and having a tapped recess at its other end to receive the threaded end portion of said driving means, and
the other of said connecting members having a tapped recess to receive the threaded end portion of said drive shaft and having a non-round recess at its other end to receive the adjacent end portion of said operating means of said drill head.
