UNITED STATES FFICEQ ATENT- MEANS FOR UTILIZING WATER-POWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,727, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed July 20, 1885. Serial No. 172,151. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARCLAY MILTON AR- MITAGE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Minnetlosa, in the Province 5 of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Utilizing \Vater-Power, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of Inyinvention is toso construct IO and arrange the operating parts of a mill in connection with the dam or reservoir that the operating stream or head of water is conducted and discharged at such a distance from the surface as to insure its freedom from the cf- 15 fects of ice and frost, and to utilize the greatest amount of head.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, in the different figures of which corresponding parts are designated by similar plan view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
a designates the dam or reservoir, which may be ofany ordinaryconstruction. A feedpipe, b, is connected with the reservoir or 2 dam as near to its bottom as practicable, and in such a manner that it will be water-tight at the joint. This pipe may be laid horizontally or at an incline, to suit the nature ofthe ground or the fall in the stream, and in such manner 0 as to allow the water, after passing through the wheel, to flow through the discharge-pipe f without the interference of backwater. This feed-pipe b connects with the flume or penstock 0, which is provided nearits bottom with One or more openings are made in the bottom (1, in which are located the water-wheels d. A discharge-pipe, f, leads from the chamber 0 at the lower end of the flume or penstoclr, and preferably emp- 4o ties into the river or stream near its bottom,
and at such a depth that the water will not freeze around the Opening thereof. A filling, e, of earth or other material covers and surrounds the pipe b, flume or penstock c, and
5 dischargepipe f,which will effectually prevent the freezing of water in those parts.
If the water-wheels d be of the construction ordinarily seen in turbines, they will be provided with vertical shafts Z, having suitable gear or belt wheels for transmitting the power, as desired.
The feed-pipe b may be provided with a grating, is, placed at an angle or incline thereto. This grating will prevent the entrance of such foreign matter as would interfere with the flow of water or the proper operation of the wheels. Being placed at an incline, the tendency of the flowing water will be to force any accumulation therefrom.
By locating the pipe b at the bottom of the dam or reservoir it will be seen that the flow of water is never impeded or prevented by the freezing of water. The same result is effected by locating the opening of the discharge-pipe f at the bottom of the river or stream. The mill can thus be kept in constant operation through the entire winter. By locating the opening of the pipe (I at the bottom of the reservoir, I am also enabled to utilize the greatest possible head of water.
A suitable wasteway, h, is provided at the top of the dam or reservoir.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with a reservoir or dam, of a pipe connected therewith nearits bottom and provided with a grating set at an incline with the opening in said pipe, said pipe leading to a flume or penstock containing water-wheels and a discharge-pipe connected with the bottom of another body of water at a lower level than the level of the reservoir or dam, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the dam and the pcnstock c, of the pipe connecting the penstock and dam, said pipe being provided with a grating set at an incline with the opening in the pipe, the water-wheel located in the opening of the penstock, the chamber below the water-wheel, and the discharge-pipe, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BARCLAY MILTON ARMITAGE.
