Jose Ernesto Muzauriefa United States Patent 3,376,585 MUSICAL MATTRESS APPARATUS Jose Ernesto Muzaurieta, San Juan, Puerto Rico (Box 9172, Santurce, Puerto Rico 00908) Filed Dec. 27, 1965, Ser. No. 516,531 1 Claim. (Cl. -345) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Mattresses having music boxes with winding keys, On- Oif switches and sliding loudness knobs are described herein.
Summary of invention This invention concerns bedding having musical sound producing devices. Disclosed herein is a mattress having a music box mounted therein.
The problems of soothing children before sleep and creating habits of accepting it not enjoying bedtime are historic and universal. Often bedtime is associated with isolation from parents and from reassuring sounds. In order that desirable bedtime habits may be instilled in children at an early age, the present invention provides a mattress equipped with a music box to encourage the development of pleasant associations of .a child for his bed. Music producing devices, including music boxes, have been played at childrens bedtime, but simple music making devices do not offer the facility of control, closeness, overall sound and vibration comfort of the present invention.
One objective of this invention is the provision of a musical device disposed within a mattress and having a winding key, an Oif-On switch and a loudness control knob extending from the mattress.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a novel mattress-music box combination.
Further objectives of this invention will be apparent from the specification and from the drawing, in which:
Breij description of the drawing FIGURE 1 is a perspective of the combined mattress and music box, illustrating suggested physical interrelationship.
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged elevation of the mattress and music box combination, showing the latters control panel.
Detailed description A childs mattress is generally indicated by numeral 1 in FIGURE 1. A central recess in one end of the mattress receives a music box 2 in close fitting relationship. The control panel of the music box 2 is flush with mattress 1, and Off-On and volume controls 3 and 4 extend outward from the face of the panel.
For purposes of safety, the music box is spring operated, and the spring is wound by key 5, which projects from the panel. The winding key is positioned near a lower extremity of the control panel to facilitate winding When the mattress is covered by a sheet, and to prevent engagement of the key with fixed objects. Electrical power is preferably avoided to obviate possibilities of short circuiting or overheating.
Off-On and volume controls are operated with sliding konbs so that they may be moved without disturbing overlying sheets and blankets.
In operation the music box 2 is wound with key 5, and the bed is made, or key may be reached under the sheets after the bed is made. When a child is put to bed, the On-Ofi lever is moved to the on position, and the volume is adjusted 'to a desired level. The apparatus produces pleasing vibrations and sound which may be enjoyed fully only when a child lies down, so that his head is close to the mattress. Thus, developing habits of rest and sleep is facilitated by providing pleasing stimulus for lying down.
Although this invention has been described by specific example, other embodiments will be obvious to one skilled in the art. The scope of the invention is defined therefore only in the appended claim.
I claim:
1. Bedding apparatus comprising:
a mattress having upper, lower lateral and end surfaces,
a music box mounted in said mattress and partially extending from an end surface thereof, said music box having:
a spring operated motor, -a control panel mounted exterior-1y on said end surface of said mattress, at least one sliding lever control having a knob extending exteriorly from said control panel, and a spring winding key extending from said control panel near a lowermost periphery thereof; whereby said music box transmits through said mattress musical vibrations which may be enjoyed by a person lying on the mattress with his head adjacent an end of the mattress which supports the music box, and whereby the at least one sliding knob may be operated through a covering on said mattress and the winding key may be reached beneath the covering.
