Beit known that "we, EDWIN P. WnLLEsLnY and CHARLES WnLLEsLEY, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Colon,
in the county ol St. Joseph and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and` useful Improvements in W'indmills; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the' invention', such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specilication.
b O ur invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in horizontal wind-wheels; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specilically pointed out in the 2o Claims.
ln the accompanying drawings, which illus` trate our invention, Figure l is a side view ol' a wind-wheel constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional g5 View, and Fig. 3 isa horizontal sectional View taken through the line .fr x el' Fig. 2.

To the under side of the circular l'rame A arel pivotally secured, by means ol` staples b, the levers C, the outer end ol' each otz which is bent upwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to engage with projections on the under edge ol' the ring D, which lits loosely over the outer edge ol the circular l'rame A. The under edge 40 ol the ring D is formed with projections for the reception ot' the upwardly-heut ends of the levers C, which levers are depressed byl the weight ol'the ring upon their outer ends. The inner ends ot' the lever abut against the central portion ot' the frame A when their outer ends are depressed, so as to support said ring below the plane ofthe circular l'ranie A. The

The operation ol' ourimprovement is as l'ollows: The wind when coming from any point will strike against the vane, and will turn the same to a vertical position, in which position it is held by the pin H, which engages with the corresponding projection, lz., on the rim of the frame F. The greater portion ofthe vane being helow the shalt will prevent the same from turning, and while said vane is in a ver- 10o tical position the opposite vane will he horizontal, so as to present a straight edge and but little resistance to the wind. The wind will act continuously upon the different vanes,
and when not acting` upon the saine said vanes will remain inclined with respect tothe frame at opposing angles. Vhen it is desired to throw the windmill out of action, the cords d are tightened, so as to throw the outer ends of the lever upwardly, and thus raise the ring` D, so that it will bear against the under edge of the eirenlar frame F, thus holding eaeh of the vanes in an inclined position, so that the Wind will not act upon the same. The pins H do not come into Contact with the ring D when the saine is lowered, and the motion of the wheel is not retarded by the saine trailing` upon the upper edge of this ring.
l. In a horizontal windmill, the combination, with a vertical shaft carrying` a revolving` frame having` projections upon its periphery, of the vane-carrying shal'ts having` pins arranged to engage the said projections, a vertically-niovinll,r ri ng constructed to engage the revolving,r frame and pins, and the levers pivoted upon theshaftsupporting frame and constructed to raise the ring, as described.
2. The Combination, with the vertical shaft B, and the revolving frame mounted thereon and carrying' the shafts G, ofthe frame A', the vertically-adjustalile ring D, constructed to engage the revolving frame, and the ievers C, pivoted to frame A and arranged to raise the ring D into engagement with the revolving fra-me. as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combina-tion, with the frame A, earrying portion A and shaft B, and the levers C, pivoted to portion A and provided with cords d. ofthe revolving frame F, carrying the vaueshafts and secured to shaft B, and the ring D,arranged to engage with the revol ving` frame, as and for the purposes specified.
