To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JOHN WM. PAYLER, of Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have-invented a new and useful Improvement in bilde-Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to slide-valves for steam and othercylinders; audit consists ofthenovel combination of dcvicesand appliances, as hereinafter more fully described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is, rst, to afford an improved slide-valve,whereby the admission of steam or other motive forceto the cylinder will be cutoff earlier and sharper, as required, by the exigenciesof the varyingload than has hitherto been accomplished by slidevalves in ordinary use; second, to relieve the steam-pressure upon the back of the Valve, and, third, to reduce to a minimum the wiredrawing ot' the steam. I accomplish these objectsby constructing a slide-valve having its induction-edges movable by means of suitable mechanism connected and arranged so as to be operated automatically by the governor orindependently by the operator, or by both combined.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the slide-valve and the ports of the cylinder in cross-section. Fig. 3 shows how the device is operated automatically by t-he governor. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view in cross-section. Fig. 5 is a plan view ofthe valve. Fig. 6 is aninverted plan.

serial No. 137,559. (M0-'eri d. These edges may be made movable by any suitable mechanism connected therewith, as shown iu the drawings. These edges have extensions d, which run up to the top ol" the main body ofthe valve, each being provided with an arm, d', adapted to be engaged by an operatiuglever, F, which is pivoted upon the back of the valve by a pin passed through a slot in the lever, whereby the lever is also adapted to move lengthwise.

J is the valve-case. To relieve the pressure from the back ofthe valve, the valve-case is provided with plates K, secured thereto, bearing upon the back of the valve. To adjust the position of the tripping-bar G,it may be connected with a hand wheel, alever, or with thegovernor-spindle L, as shown in Fig. 3, in order' to automatically or independently control the travel of the lever F, and consequently the travel of the movable edges d. In this manner said movable edges will be operated to cut off the admission of steam to the cylinder, as required by theeXigencies of the varying load.
The plates K, it will be observed, will effectually relieve the pressure of steam upon the back of the valve. Moreover, the position of the tripping device Ginay be easily and simply regulated,either by hand or automatically, so that the movable edges will be operated to the utmost nicety. This mechanism,
it will also be seen, will reduce to aminimutn the wiredrawing of the steam, and that too at the very inlet to the cylinder.
The bar G may be made adjustable by means IOO ofa holt or pin, g, inserted through an elongated slot, g', ot' said bar and secured in the valve-case below. I also prel'ertoprovidethe lever F with a shoulder or stud, j", to engage against the overlapping end of the bar G.

2. The combination, with a slide-valve, of movable edges provided with arms d', and a lever movablelengthwise, adapted to bel'oreed between said arms and crowd said edges out'-v ward from the body of the valve, substantially 4as described.
3. The combination, with a slide-valve, of movable edges, mechanism to throw said edges Outward from the body of the valve simultaneously, and springs to retract said edges, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with a slide-valve. ot' movable edges and alever movable lengthwise and constructed to force said edges outward from the body of the valve and parallel to each other, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with a slide-valve, of movable edges and a levoroapable of endwise motion and constructed to i'oree said edges out permanently from the body oi' the valve until the pressure of said levei` is removed, substantially as described.
