JULES MAGNETTE, OF LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK.
RATCH ET-DRI LL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 337,599, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed November 25, 1885. Serial No. 183,942.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULES MAGNET'IE, of Long Island City, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ratchet Drills, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of myimproved ratchet-drill, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the extension part of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same, part being broken away.
The object of this invention is to provide ratchetdrills constructed in such manner that the drill can be readily fed forward, and the feed arrangement can be extended. or contracted, as circumstances may require.
Theinvention consists in the combination, with the screw-socket of the ratchet-wheel and the feed-screw having point and polygonal head, of the intermediate telescoping screws and their stop-pins, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents the handle; B, the ratchetwheel which carries the drill O. The ratchetwheel B is pivoted in the handle A, and with it engages the pawl D,also pivoted to the said handle A.
Upon the ratchet-wheel B is formed, or to it is rigidly attached, a socket, E, having in its upper end an interiorly-projecting screwthread, into which fits the out-er screw-thread of the tubular screw F. In the upper end'of the screw F is formed a projecting interior screw-thread,into which fits the exterior screwthread of the tubular screw G. In the upper end of the tubular screw G is formed an interior projecting screw-thread, into which fits the thread of the feed-screw H. The screw H is made solid, has a tapered point, I, and a polygonal head, J, on its upper end, so that it can be readily turned with a Wrench to feed the drill 0 forward.
In one side of the screw-socket E and of the tubular screws F G are formed openings K,
(No model.)
through which pins L can be passed into holes in the inner ends of the tubular screws F G and the solid screw H. The pins L are made of such a length that their ends will project at the outer sides of the screws in which they are placed, and rest against the smooth inner surfaces of the screws within which the said pin-carrying screws are placed, as shown in Fig. 2. With this construction, when the drill-ratchet is to be used, the drill is adjusted in the place where the hole is to be drilled, and the extension feed-screws are so adjusted that the point I will rest against the knee or other support arranged to resist the backward pressure of the feed-screws. The handle is then operated to turn the drill, and the feed-screws are turned out as the drill works its way forward to maintain the necessary pressure upon the drill. As the wrench is applied to the head J ofthe screw H, the first effect is to turn the said screw out until its pin L strikes the interior screw-thread of the tubular screw G, when the screws H G will move out together until the pin L of the tubular screw G strikes the interior screwthread of the tubular screw F, when the three screws H G F will move'out together, and so on until the hole has been drilled to the desired depth or the limit of extension has been reached.
Any desired number of the intermediate telescoping screws, F G, can be used, as circumstances may require.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a ratchet-drill, the combination, with the screw-socket E of the ratchet-wheel B and the feed-screw H, having point I and polygonal head J, of the intermediate telescoping screws. F G, and their stop-pins L, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the feed-screws can be extended or contracted, as may be required.
J ULES MAGNE'ITE.
