AUTOMA U WEIGHT MOTOR. No. 337,428. figyd. Patented Mar. 9, 1886.
NiTE STATES PATENT rrrca.
ADOLPH OSTERLOH, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
AUTOMATIC WEIGHT-MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,428, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed July 28, 1885. Serial No. 172,912. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH OSTERLOH, a resident of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented a new and useful Automatic Weight-Power; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to means for providing power automatically by the application of the pendulum-clock movement to a pump or other mechanical devices.
The following description fully explains the nature of my said invention, and the manner in which I proceed to construct, apply, and operate the same, the accompanying drawings being referred to by figures and letters.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation, showing pumps and the weight-power or pendulum-clock movement attached. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the knife-bearing for the pendulum-rod. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the pendulum-rod, showing the slot of the adjustable arm. Fig. 4. is a plan view of the adjustable arm.
Referring to Fig. 1, my automatic weightpower or pendulum-clock movement is attached to the crank-shaft of a pump. The movement is attached to a frame, a, constructed of metal or wood, and inside of the frame is a standard, 0, in which and the outer side of the frame the pinions i i", holding the gearingjj have their bearings. The Winding-arbor Z, holding the reel k, and the ratchet 9, attached to the gearing, have their bearings also in the standard and the frame. The reel holds the chain or cord m, to which the weight n is attached. The axis b has its bearings in the upper end of the frame. The pallets of a lever or other escapement, I)", set on this axis, and are held by a screw, and the scape-wheel sets on the spindle 2'. Near the inner end of the axis 7) there is attached by a screw an L- shaped arm, c,-the short limb of which enters the pendulum-rod e. The pendulum is suspended from a knife-bearing, d, which is bolted to the upper inner side of the frame, and below the arm 0 it has a long slot, f, Fig. 3, for an adjustable arm, e", the shoulder of which is attached by a set-screw to a connecting-rod,
p, which is keyed to the pump-crank shaft. Attached to the pendulum-rod is a weight, k, which is adjusted by a set-screw, h
In the application of my automatic weightpower to obtain a vibrating or oscillating movement, Fig. 1, the operation is similar to that of a pendulum-clock. The chain or cord is wound on the arbor Z by a crank, and is held by the ratchet g, and as the chain expends the gearing j j acts, and the pinion t, on which the scape-wheel is set, receives the pallets of the escapement b set on the axis 1), and imparts to the pendulum through the L-shaped arm 0 the impulse by which it oscillates on the arc to which it has been adjusted. The vibration of the pendulum acts on the arm 6", which is adjusted on the connecting-rod, the head of which is keyed to the pump-crank shaft and causes the piston-rods to oscillate.
The stroke and power required are regulated by adjusting the arm 6 ,-WhlCl1 acts in the slot fin the pendulum-rod, and the weight n on the pendulum-rod by the set-screw 72 I do not of course claim thependulum-clock movement, but I do claim the application of the pendulum-clock movement in the manner shown and to other mechanical devices as a cheap and efficient means of providing power.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the swinging arm of a pump or other device, of an oscillating pend ulum and drum, cord, and weight mechanically connected therewith in the ordinary way so that the force of the weight shallcause the pendulum to vibrate and the movement of the pendulum shall work the pump or other handle.
2. The combination, with the weight and connected mechanism,of the pendulum e, having the longitudinal slot f, and the pumphandle or analogous part 19, provided with the adjustable arm 6*, working in slot f, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ADOLPH OSTERLOH. [L. 8.]
