MACHINE FOR SE'AMING SHEET METAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,427, dated March 9, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HORATIO J. NoYEs, of Ashtabula, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seam Closing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the machine. Fig. 3 is a front View. Figs. at and 5 are side and front views, detached and enlarged, of the traversing head. Fig. 6 is a side view, detached and enlarged, of the guiding-roller. Fig. 7 is a side view of the adj usting seam-stop. Fig. 8 is a detail view of the parts comprising the adjustable frame of the traversing head. Fig. 9 is a detached view of the box comprising the main body ofthe traversing head. Fig. 10 is a detached view of the guide-bar and the connecting-rod and thumb-lever for operating it.
This invention relates to machines for rolling and pressing down the seams in sheet metal; and it consists of a traversing head carrying impression-rolls across a table or bed,over which the sheets are conveyed.
The machine contains the following elements constructed, combined, and operating as hereinafter described and claimed: First, a table or bed upon which the sheets are laid, adjusted to place, and their adjoining edges locked; second, a transverse frame or arms provided with a traveling head, having adjustable impression-rolls which press down and close the seam; third, an automatic stop or guide for adjusting the locked edges of the sheets in place for receiving said impression and, fourth, a movable drum for winding the united sheets upon, and a guide-roll for directing the said sheets thereon.
A is a bed or table, which may be of wood or iron, as desired, having side bars or rails, a a, secured by bolts or other suitable means. In the bed is made a cross groove or slot, or, through which the shank of an adj usting guidebar, a", passes, which shank is connected to a draw-rod, a attached to a thumb-lever, a, at the side of thebed.
B is a frame attached to the right-hand end of the table or bed,and crosswise thereto. The rear end of said frame has a projection, B, by means of which it is secured to a work-bench.
Said frame consists of an upper and lower rail, 12 b, the lower one'having its upper surface on a line with the bed. The upper rail supports and-forms the track for the traversing head to travel upon, and has in the front side a rack, 12*.

Each of said halves of this frame carries one of the two impression-rolls E F. This frameDis fitted onto the box 0,and is held thereon by bolts 6 6, through the top cross-piece, screwed into the top of the box 0, thesides of the frame bearing against the flanges c of the box. The halfdd of the frame may be made to bearwith less force on the seam by loosening up the bolt 6, which willallow that half to yield or slide upward. By means of the bolts e e the impression-rollers may be made to bear with more or less force on the seams. A wrench, G, is made the required length to lie between the heads of the said screws 6 e, and thereby lock them to prevent their turning and disarranging the rollers. 'On one side of the head is attached a handle, H, for operating the head. On the opposite side of the head is arranged a vertical shaft, 1, standing in a step, j, on the box 0, and turninginalug, j, at the upper side. Said shaft is provided with a pinion, t, which works in the aforesaid rack b*. This shaft and pinion are designed to be used when greater power is required than for ordinary work by applying a crank on the upper end.
Extension supporting-arms K K are secured to the table or bed for carrying the other mechanism. Two cross rods, is It, serve to brace and stiffen said arms. In the outer ends of the arms are sockets for supporting the journals of a drum, M.
On the rods If) is adjustably fixed a guideroller, 1', set in aself-adj usting bearing in the form of a yoke, 31, the shank of which plays in a hole in the bar 00, secured to the rods It by a set-screw, 5, while the arms of the yoke set loosely on the rods, and have springs 16 i on said rods interposed between them and the bar 00, giving elasticity to the said roller. To the upper rod, It, is also attached a stop inechanism, consisting of a jointed arm, N, secured to the rod by a set'screw, and having its forward end crooked downward and resting on the arm I) of the frame 13. On each side of the arm N are attached springs a 11., for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
I is a brake attached to the arm K and hearing against the periphery of the flange of the drum M, and is designed to prevent the drum from rotating backward. The drum M is provided for rolling the united sheets upon as fast as they are done. In one side of the drum is made a slot or groove, m, for attaching the edge of the first sheet to commence winding.
The operation of this machine is as follows: First, the. sheets, having their edges properly bent for locking, are placed one after another in succession upon the machine to be operated upon. The first sheet is placed between the rods 7s is, beneath the stop N, and resting on the roller 0. Then the second sheet is laid on the bed, with its edgelocked into the edge ofthe first sheet. Then the operatorbears 011 thelever a, drawing forward the guide-bar a", which forces the sheets against the side rail, a, to bring them square with the frame B. They are then carried forward until said locked edges come in contact with the aforesaid stop N. Now they are ready and in position to have the seam pressed down. The operator then grasps the handle H with his left hand and draws the head 0 across the table, pressing down the seam. As the head moves across, it strikes the stop N, which is turned on itsjoint to one side, letting the head pass. The head is carried back again, and the stop also moved, or is turned aside again to let the head pass, which immediately straightens out again by the action of the springs n n on its sides. The hooked edge of the first sheet is caught into the groove m in the drum M, with its side edge resting in the guideroller 1'. Then by turning the drum-crank the sheets are wound upon the drum to nearly bring the bent edge of the last sheet to the stop N, when another sheet is attached and the operations repeated. When a sufficient number of sheets have been thus joined to any required length, a cord or wire band may be wound around the roll of sheets on the drum and fastened, and then the drum lifted out from the sockets and stood on end on the floor and the drum withdrawn from the roll and replaced in the sockets for repeated use.
Having described my invention, I claim as follows:
1. The combination, in the traversing head of a seam-closing machine, with the box 0 thereof, provided with the friction-rolls c, and a handle, H, and pinioned shalt I, of the divided frame D, carrying the two impressionrolls, E F, and the bolts 0 e, and wrench G, constructed and operating as described, and for the purpose setforth.
2. The combination, with the bed or table A of a machine for closing the seams of sheet metal, having extension-anus K, and a receiving-drum, M, supported thereon, of the guideroll r, fixed in yoke y, that is supported on the cross rods 70 It, by bar 00 and having springs t t and adapted to guide the sheets to the drum, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the bed or table A of a machine for closing the seams in sheet metal, the transverse frame B, carrying the traversing head 0, and the receiving-dru n1 M, of the stop N, consisting of the jointed bar supported on cross-rod 1:, and having springs an on each side and adapted to adjust the seam of the united sheets to place upon the track of the impression-rolls, and to be turned to either side as said head 0 passes back and forth, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
