BUCK SAW FRAME. No. 337,399. Patented Mar. '9, 1886.
Wiivzeddefl UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM HANKIN, SR, OF WILLIAMSBURG, NEW YORK.
BUCK-SAW FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337.399. dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed December 5, 1885. Serial No. 184,806. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HANKIN, Sr., a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Williamsburg, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buck- Saw Frames, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to buck-saw frames of arch-shaped stretchers; and the objects of my invention are, first, to give to the brace a solid bearing upon the stretcher or cross-bar, and to endow thereby with flexible strain the saw-frame, preventing thus loosening in the joints, yielding cornerwise, sagging sidewise, or breaking, when worked, on account of the dead rigidity of the parts; and, second, so to place the brace in the frame as to permit the sawyer to conveniently use his hand either above or below the brace without disturbing thereby the even balance of the frame, and thus to perform more Work with greater ease. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of my improved saw; Fig. 2, a modified detail view of the central part of the brace and arch-bar. Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 are modified forms of fasteners for securing the brace and arch-bar together.
Similarletters refer to similarparts through out the several views.
The blade A, side pieces, 13 and B, the latter with extension or handle I), the tie-rod O, with right and left hand screw-threads, and screw-shackle c, are all parts of ordinary form or construction. The cross-bar D is archshaped, with tenoned ends passing into the mortises b b of the respective sides B B,and its crown d being either leveled ofi,or,preferably, made concave, to receive in solid bearing the diagonal double brace E, made in one piece, and its under side, 6, being either leveled off to firmly rest upon the top, or, preferably, made convex, to strongly sit in the concave crown of the arch-bar. This braceE is,more-' over, so shaped that its two ends enter the recesses of the respective side pieces, B B, at the points f f of the latter, which points are about midway between the looped ends of the tie rod 0 and the mortisesff, thus allowing the operator to change his hand from above to under, or vice versa, but still always near to the brace, without thereby throwing the saw out of its balance.
The arch-bar and its diagonal brace can be made to keep still more securely together by holders made of different form or cast of different construction, to wit: Fig. 3, by adjustable plates with ears or lappets having four points of bearing; Fig. 4, by casting with six spurs or points pressed into the brace and arch-bar; Fig. 5, by riveted pins and diagonal straps; Fig. 6, by washers with points forced into the wood; Fig. 7, by wire staple having barbed points; Fig. 8, by diagonal straps secured by rivets; Fig. 9, by double-H studs.
I am aware that prior to my invention bucksaws with arched stretchers and braced diagonally have been constructed. I therefore do not claim such a combination, broadly; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- In a handsaw frame, the arched tensionbrace E, made in one piece, constructed to have its convex side sit firmly in the corresponding central cavity of arched cross-bar D, to which it is, moreover, secured by studs, spurs, or straps, and being so shaped or curved that its two ends must enter the recesses of the frame-sides at fixed points f f, for the special purpose of allowing thereby the saw to be operated in even balance with the hand either above or below the brace end, all as described and shown. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
l/VILLIAM HANKIN, SR.
