Description

" 11 B. ABBEY.
Com-Planter.
Patented Nov. 12, 1861 N.PETERS. pu m.umoemml ER WASHINGTON D C.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE v IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-PLANTERS.
Specificat'ion forming art of Letters Patent N0. 33,688, datcd November 12, 1861.
T0 all whom z't may concem:
Beil; known that I, D. B. ABBEY, of Horse Heads, in the county 0f Ohemung und Sate of New York, have invented a new and Improved Oorn-Planter; and I (10 hereby declare filmt; the following is a full, clear, and exact description of%he Same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part 0f this speeification, in whieh Figure l is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the line ac x, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan 01 topview of the same'; Fig. 3, a, detached plan 01 top view of a portion of thp mechan-' ism whieh drives the seed-slide; Fig. 4, a side view of the furrow-share, seed-tube,and COV- ering-share arrangement; Fig. 5, a detaehed inverted plan 0f the same.
Similar letters of refernce indieate corresponding parts in the several figures.
T0 enable those skillecl in the art t0 fully understand and construcl; my iuvention,I will proceed to describe it A represents a rectsangular t'rame, whicl1 is mounted on two wheels, B B, and has a drivers seat, O, als its back part.
D is the draflz-pole.
The wheels B B are placed 011 separate or independeut axles aa,the axlea of the wheel Bflbeiug longerthan the axle a of wheel B.
'lhe wheel B is the driver, as the seed-distr'ib-- uting devlce is operated fr0m im bythe following means: The axle a has a small wheel, E, up0n it, which wheel is provided with aratchet-face. The wheel E is fitted loosely 011 axle a, bat by means 0f a feather is made t0 turn wil:h the axle.
On the axle a there is also fitted a cam, F, which is formed of a small drum 0r wheelhaving a zigzag 0r serpentine' thread, b, 011 its periphery, which thread works betsween two pins, c, an the under sicle of a lever, G, the back encl of which is pivoted to the back part 0f the frame A, and the front end connected 1:0 a seed-slide, H, 011 the freut part of frame A. The cam F has two pins, d d, passing th'rough it, and these pins, when the machine is in use, are kept in contact with the wheel E by means of a bent lever, I, the lever und of which is forked and is behind the wheel E, and thenpper end directly over a. foot-lever, J, which has a spring, e, bearing against il:s
under surfaee, said spring causing the leverJ t0 press upward against the under' slde of the top of lever I, the lowerend 0f said lever pressing the wheel E against the pins d d ot the cam. A small spiral spring, a", 0n the axle a has a tendency t0 force the wheel E from the plus d d.
The seed-slide H works beneath two seedboxes, K K, and t0 the under side 0f frameA there are seeured, by kluges 0r joints f, tvvo seed-tubes, L L, one underneath eaclr seedbox K. The seed-tubes L L are conneeted by a cross-bar, Mwhich has a hand-lever, N, couneeted t0 it, said handlever passing up through frame A within reach or' the driver. On each seed-tube L there is fitted loosely a collar, g, and to these collars furro.w-shares O are attaehed, one to eacl1 collar. 'llre collars g are each conneeted 110 the under side offrame A by rods h h, which are allowed t0 swing uncovering-shares Q are attaehed, and the back encl of each stock or bar P is connected t0 the eollar q above in by a rod, z.
From tl1is descript-ion lt. will be seen tl1al: by actuating the lever N the seed-tubes L may swing forwarrl and the sl1ares O Q elevated above the surface of the ground; aud it will also be seen that the r1river ab any time, by pressing dowu the lever J with bis f0ot-, so that the spiral spring a" may disengage the wheel E fr0m the pius d d 0f the cam F, may render the machine operative and imperative, and the corn therefore may be dropped in check rows, and 110 attend-ant; required.
Having thus described my invention, what I 'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'lhe swingiug seed-tubes L, with the collars g fitted on-them and provided wibh the furrow-shares Oin connection with stocks or bars P, attached to the lower ends 0f the tubes L. and provided with the covering-shares Q, all being arranged to operate as and for the purpose specified.
