To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, GUSTAV H. W. Stnnon, of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Barrel Leveling and Trussing Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved machine for leveling and trussing barrels, kegs, &c., in a single oper- 1o ation, which machine is simple in construction, strong and durable, and operates rapidly.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter,

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

The plate F is connected by connecting-bars J, pivoted to the under side of the same, with a crank-shaft, J, journaled in the base of the machine, and provided with a worm-wheel, K, engaging with a worm, K, on a shaft, K provided with the belt-pulley L, over which a belt, L, passes, which also passes over the beltpulley L on the shaft M, journaled in the frame N, pivoted to the top plate of the machine, and connected by the rod 0 with the foot-lever P or treadle, which is mounted rigidly on the shaft in, journaled in lugs on the standards in which the shaft K is journaled, which shaft is provided with an arm, n, on the end of which a roller, 0, is mounted, which runs on a camring. 1), projecting from the face of the worm wheel K. A belt-pulley, M, is mounted on the shaft M. In the centers of the plates F and F a shaft, Q, is mounted to slidevertically, and on the upper end of the same the leveling-disk R is formed or secured, which has a bevel edge to fit the ends of the staves, and a laterally projecting ledge, R. The shaft Q is connected by links S with the lever S, pivoted on a connecting-piece, E, and having its outer end connected with a screw-rod,T, passedthrough the end of said lever S, and having its upper end connected with an anglelevcr, U, pivoted on the plate F, and having an arm, V, carrying the weight \V. A leveli11g-disk, R, is mounted in the same manner in the upper plates, D D, with the exception that the connecting-levers, &c., are slightly different, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8.
The weights W can easily be adjusted so as Sc to have more or less power, as circumstances may require. The platforms or plates D F have the four slots to extending from the center to the four corners, and through each slot a bolt, d, is passed, which is also passed through a segmental hoop'driver, g, which hoop-drivers have the upwardly-projecting flanges h,which act on those edges of the hoops nearest the ends of the barrel.
The operation is as follows: The drivers 9 are adj usted according to the size of the barrel to be leveled and trussed, and the barrel is then placed between the disks It, the end hoops being on the barrel. If the barrel also has bilge-hoops, the same are driven up tight enough to keep the staves from springing before operating on the barrel. hen all parts are in place, the treadle P is pressed down, and thereby the frame N is swung up, and the belt L is tightened, thus causing the worm- Ioo shaft K to revolve, whereby the worm-wheel K and the shaft J are revolved, and by means of the bars J the plate F is pressed upward, and the disks R are forced against the ends of the staves, which are thus leveled. The disks, being subjected to the pressure on the ends of the barrels, are moved relatively from each other, and the weights are swung up more or less, and by their action the ends of the staves are held level. The plates F continue to move upward, and the drivers then act on the truss-hoops and drive them home. During this part of the operation the treadle is pressed down by the foot, and the belt is thus tightened, and when the treadle is pressed down the roller 0 is clear of the cam-ring p, and does not act on it. As soon as the treadle is released, the roller on the arm a swings against the cam, which presses said arm outward, and thereby the rod 0 is pressed up, and the belt is kept tightened by the cam, thus permitting the operator to leave the ma chine and prepare a fresh barrel, or to put the same in position for placing it on the machine. Half of the revolution is thus made under the control of the operator, and the other half of the revolution is controlled automatically by the cam on the crank-shaft. When the barrel has been completed, it is re moved and replaced by another.
In some barrels the diameters of the heads are not alike, and in such cases the end hoops of the barrel will not be trussed the same dis tance, but the slack or smaller end will have the hoops driven on farther than the full or larger end; but when the ends of the barrel are of like diameter the end hoops should be driven on or trussed the same distance.
Before the machine is in operation, and when there is no barrel between the leveling-disks, both disks stand out ahead of the drivers.
The weights WV, acting on the levelers, are made adjustable, so as to adjust the machine to barrels of different sizes.
Having thus fully described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a barrel leveling and trussing machine, the combination, with a frame, of a stationary platform, a movable platform, a movable leveling-disk held 011 each platform, and a lever pivoted on each platform and carrying a weight, and pivoted arms and rods connected with the weighted lever and with the movable leveling-disks, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a barrel leveling and trussing machine, the combination, with a frame, of a stationary platform and a movable platform,-a movable leveling-disk held on each platform, a weighted lever pivoted on each platform, and pivoted arms and rods, said rods connecting adj ustably with said arms, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. In a barrel leveling and trussing machine, the combination, with a frame,of a stationary platform and a movable platform, a barrelleveling disk in each platform, a lever, S, pivoted on each platform, links connecting said levers S with the leveling-disks, the anglelevers U, pivoted on the platforms,the rods T, connecting the same with the levers S, weights W on arms V of the levers U, and of hoopdrivers on the platforms, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. In abarrel leveling and trussing machine, the combination, with a vertical frame, of a stationary platform on the same and a movable platform mounted to move toward and from the stationary platform, a crank-shaft connected with the movable platform by connecting-bars, gearing for revolving the crankshaft, a driving-belt for operating said gearing, a swinging frame on the top of the upright mainframe of the machine, a drivingpulley in said swinging frame, over which driving-pulley the drivingbelt that operates the gearing of the movable platform passes, and a rod connecting the swinging frame with a treadle at the base of the machine, substantially as herein shown and described.
6. In abarrel leveling and trussing machine, the combination, with a stationary plate or platform and a movable plate or platform which can be moved toward the stationary platform, of a crank-shaft and connectingrods for moving the adjustable platform, and a worm-wheel on the end of the crankshaft, a worm engaging with said worm-wheel, abeltpulley on the shaft carrying the worm, a camring on the end of the crank-shaft, a rocking lever on which the cam acts, a foot -lever mounted on the rocking lever,a rod connected with the foot-lever, a swinging frame on the top of the machine, which swinging frame is connected with a rod connected to the foot- 1ever,a belt-pulley in the swinging frame,and a belt passed over the pulley in the swinging frame and over the pulley on the shaft carrying the worm, substantially as herein shown and described.
7. In a barrel leveling and trussing machine, the combination, with a vertical frame, of a stationary platform on the same and a movable platform mounted to move toward and from the stationary platform, a crank-shaft for reciprocating the movable platform, a cam on the crank-shaft, and a belt-tightening device operated from said cam, substantially as herein shown and described.
