TABLE LEAF SUPPORT.
Patnted Feb. 23
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WENDELIN SENG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AUGUST HEUER AND HENRY BROCKSOHMID'I, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
TAB LE-LEA F SUPPO RT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,757. dated February 23. 1886,
Application filed August 31,1885. Serial No. 175,732. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WENDELIN SENG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table Leaf Supports, of which the followingisaspecification, to wit:
Thisinvention relates to table-leaf supports; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enableothers skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a section of a portion of a table top and leaf with my device in use. Fig. 2 is a side view of the device'folded; and Fig. 3 a similar view, partly in section, extended.
a represents the top, and a a leaf, of a table of any ordinary or preferred construction. To the leaf, and also to the table-frame, are secured at proper points small brackets b b, in each of which is hinged a metal rod, b. Ore of these rods has secured upon its end a metal slide or sleeve, b through which the other rod slides, as in the drawings. On one side of the slide or sleeve b is cast a small frame, 0, and a headed pin, 0, passes through this frame andthesleeve, as shown, which pin is formed with a shoulder, 0 between which and the frame is a spring, 0 which holds the pin in place. The other rod has near its outer end a notch, d. \Vhen this leaf is folded, the spring-pin is pulled out to disengage it from the notched rod, and when the leaf is allowed to fall the slide passes down to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. When the leaf is drawn out, the rods are extendedtill the springpin engages the notch 03 and the whole is firm and substantial. I
It will be seen that the ends of the rodseotions are turned at right angles to their main portion and entered in the brackets to form the hinges, and this, together with the cast slide or sleeve, renders the device strong and cheap. The casting or sleeve is formed with a socket to be firmly secured on one rod, and it will be seen that a thin web of metal is left between this socket and the passage through which the other rod slides, thus separating the rods and preventing any friction between them as they are operated.
I am aware that supports have been. heretofore made in which a single arm is hinged on one part of the table and slides at the other end on a stationary guide on the other side of the table, and I do not desire to claim such as my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a table-leaf support, the combination of a pair of supporting-rods, each hinged in a suitable bracket, and one provided on its inner end with a sleeve and spring latch-pin, and the other formed with a notch, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a tableleat' support, the combination oft'the rods b, having their outer ends turned or bent at right angles and hinged in the brackets b, the sleeve b cast with a frame, 0, the shouldered and headed pin a, the spring 0 arid the notch d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A casting for table-leaf supports, consistof a main body, 2), formed with a socket to receive one part of the support, separated by a web of metal from a passage for the other part of thesupport, and having aguide-frame for the spring-latch cast or formed with it on one side, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
W'ENDELIN SENG.
