Be it known that I, EDWIN WV. AYER, of Cumberland Mills, county of Cu mberland, and State "of Maine, have invented an Improvement in 'Apparatns for Winding and Rewinding Paper,
of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification. like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to construct a simple and durable machine for wind ing a web of paper, cloth, or other material upon a core or reel as it is delivered from usual calender or finishing rolls, and to afterward rewind the web back upon the reel from which it was taken prior to entering the calender or finishing machine, such winding and rewinding being done without necessitating the removal or change of location of the winding mechanism, as has previously been re quired.
Theinvention consists, essentially, ofmechanism, substantially as will be described, for alternately rotating the said cores or reels to wind paper or other material in the form of a web from one to the other core or reel, as may be desired.
My improved machine contains two parallel shafts, each provided with clutches to engage and rotate either of two cores or reels placed parallel each to the other, and with their shafts in line with the axis of the said shafts. Each core or reel shaft has upon it a toothed gear, and between the shafts is located a tipping driving-shaft having upon it a toothed gear, so that the said gear, by the movement of the tipping shaft, may be made to engage the gear of either shaft to positively turn it and the core or reel clutched to it, according to which core or reel is to receive the material. The driving-shafthas on it a belt-pulley. Each core orreel shaft has on it a drum which is embraced by a clamp, (shown as a pair of jaws,) each drum and clamp'combined constituting a friction device by which to retard the rotation of the core or reel from which the web is being taken, as will be described.
Figure 1 represents in side elevation an apparatus for winding and rewinding paper, cloth, or other material,constructed in accordance with this invention, the reel upon which the paper is wound and its bearings being shown in dotted lines; Fig. 2, atop view of the apparatus with the cores or reels omitted; and Fig. 3, an end view of Fig. 2, showing a series of calender-rolls in dotted lines.
The apparatus to be described is to rotate either of two cores or reels like that marked a, the one shown receiving a web of cloth, paper, or other material which is coming to it from between the rolls of a calender, B, of usual construction. The other core or reel, 1), supplies the web.
The cores or reels a b are mounted to be freely rotated in open bearings a a b b in the frame-work A A. Parallel shafts c c are also lnOunted to be rotated in suitable bearings in the framework A, the axis of rotation of the said shafts c 0' being respectively in line with the axis of rotation of the reels a b.
The shafts c 0 each have mounted upon them at or near the same point in the direction of their length toothed gears c c, which are alternately engaged by a toothed gear, at, carried upon a tipping drive-shaft, d, the latter 'havingfa swivel or pivotal bearing at one end, as at (P, and a sliding or movable hearing at its opposite end, as at d.
The tipping drive-shaft d is continuously rotated by a band-pulley, D, and is moved on its pivotal bearing d by the hand-lever d, at tached to the sliding bearing d thereby causing its toothed gear d to mesh either with the toothed gear 0 or 0 at the will of the opcrator. The hand-lever d, by means of which the tipping drive-shaft is moved, is locked in position by the notches 'i, engaging the projection 3. Thus it will be seen that the shafts 'c 0 may be alternately rotated, butin the same direction.
The shafts c c are each provided with a clutch mechanism, by means of which they are made to engage one or the other reel, a b, as desired. Said clutch mechanisms being of similar design, only one need be described.
Socketed upon the shaft 0 is a clutch-box, 6, having projecting faces, which, as it is moved upon the said shaft by the lever e, pivoted to a bracket, 6, and having engaging ends 6 e, clutches a counterpart box, f, splined to the reel a, said box f having indentations corresponding with the projections upon the clutchbox 6. Should the reel b be filled and the reel a empty, the lever e will be operated to clutch the shaft 0 to the reel a. The handlever 61 is then operated, bringing the toothed gear d into mesh with the toothed gear 0 thereby rotating the shaft 0 and the reel a, winding the paper or cloth upon the reel a as it is delivered from a series of calender-rolls, B, the clutch mechanism co-operating with the shaft 0 and reel b, from which the paper is taken,at such time being released, permitting said reel 1) to rotate freely. Should the reel 1) under this arrangement rotate too freely for any cause,suitable tension devices maybe employed, which, while under the control of the operator, may be employedto any suitable extent to restrain its rotation. The tension devices in this instance consist of two semicircularjaws, on m, pivoted together and to the framework A at m by a pin, said jaws m m having lugs m m" at their adjacent free ends, through which pass an adjusting-screw, 122 the said jaws m m surrounding a drum, n, mounted fast upon the shaft 0, against the circumference of which they bear frictionally, regulated by the adjusting-screw m Each shaft 0 c is supplied with a tension device of this kind, to be employed while the clutch mechanism of its own shaft is released. 7
It is obvious that any other suitable tension device may be employed without departing from this invention.
It will be seen that by the employment of two reels operated as described the paper may be operated upon by the calender or finishing rolls B upon each side by permitting the paper to be taken from one reel and passed through the machine, and then taken from the other roll and passed through the machine in the same direction-21 e., always entering between the same two feed-rollsthereby reversing the sides or turning the paper or material each time it is run through the finishingrolls.
I claim 7 1. The reels a b, one containing paper to be passed between calender or other rolls, and the other to take the paper as it is delivered from the said rolls, combined with shafts c c, and clutch mechanism, substantially as described, for engaging the said shafts with their corresponding reels and a movable drive shaft, and mechanism, substantially as described, operated by the drive-shaft for rotating the shafts cc alternately, all as set forth.
2. The reels a b, one containing paper to be passed between calender or other rolls, and the other to take the paper as it is delivered from the said rolls, combined with shafts c c, and clutch mechanism, substantially as described, for engaging the said shafts with their corresponding reels and a movable driveshaft, and mechanism, substantially as described, operated by the drive-shaft, for rotating the shafts c 0 alternately, and tension devices co-operating with the shafts c c to restrain their rotation, all as set forth.
3. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of parallel shafts c c',toothed gears c c thereon, a movable drive-shaft interposed between the shafts c c, a toothed gear, d, carried thereby, means, substantially as described, for engaging the toothed gear d alternately with .the toothed gears c a, the parallel reels a b, have their axis of rotation corresponding with the axis of rotation of the parallel shafts c c,and clutch mechanism, substantially as described, for clutching the reels a b to the shafts c a when desired.
4. The tipping drive-shaft d and toothed gear (I thereon, combined with the shafts c 0, their toothed gears 0 0 to be engaged alternately by the toothed gear d, clutch mechanism, substantially as described, for engaging the shafts c 0 with the reels a b,and the reels, all as set forth.
5. The reels a b, shaftscc and toothed gears c 0 thereon, and clutch mechanism, substan tially as described, combined with the drive shaft d and toothed gear d thereon, said shaft having a swivel or pivotal bearing at one end and a movable or sliding hearing at its opposite end, and means,substantially as described, for moving it on its pivotal bearing to alternately engage its toothed gear with the gears 0 0 carried by the shafts c c, all as set forth.

The reels a bfshafts c c and toothed gears c c thereon, and clutch mechanism, substantially as described, combined with the drive-shaft d and toothed gear d thereon, said shaft having a swivel or pivotal bearing at one end and a movable or sliding bearing at its opposite end, the hand-lever connected with the drive-shaft for moving it on its pivotal bearing, and means,substantially as described, for locking the said lever in its different positions, all as set forth.
