Description

To all whom it may concern.-
UNITED STATES PATENT trice.
CYRUS IV, STROUT, OF CALAIS, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR DOVETAILING WINDOIMSASHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,667, dated November 5, 1861.
Be it known that I, CYRUs W. STROUT, of Calais, in the county of Vashington and State of Maine, have invented anew and Improved Machine for Dovetailing Window-Sashes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents my improved machine by a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an end View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This machine is designed for dovetailing sashes, the object of the invention being to obtain a machine adapted for cutting the dovetail mortise in the stile and also the tenon on the meeting-rail to correspond therewith, and both so accurately as not to require after leaving the cutters other iitting to form a perfect joint.
To enable others to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a rectangular frame mounted upon fourlegsB B and supporting near one end a revolving cutter-head C, which is secured upon a mandrel D, placed transversely of the frame and journaled at each end in boxes E E.
a a are a series of right and left hand cutters attached to one side of the head, so as to project beyond its periphery, and provided each with slots, so that by loosening` the screws b b, by which they are attached to the head, they can be adjusted so as to project a greater or less distance from the periphery thereof and are partially covered by a hood or cover P, which is hinged to the back of the frame, so that it can be turned over to afford access to the cutters.
G is a pulley secured upon the mandrel and is the Vmedium through which motion is imparted to the cutters.
Il is a rocking or tilting table upon which the stuit' to be mortised is placed. This table is provided 011 its under side with two transverse bars, one near each end, through which a shaft s, supported at its ends in the upper part of standards c c, passes, and upon which thetable has a rocking motion.
I is a carriage, which has a forked head at its front end and laterally-projecting arms at its back. A screw d, journaled at each end in boxes e e and furnished with a crank, passes through nuts formed in the forked head of the carriage, by means of which a lateral movement is imparted to the carriage and table. The back end of the carriage rests upon the pointof the screwf, which passes up through the end rail of the frame and is provided on its lower en d with a crank, by meansl of which the back end of the table can be elevated, so as to always cut both sides of the mortise of the same length in all thicknesses of stuff.
The table is elevated and retained in a level or inclined position by means of adjustable stops n n, which are attached to the laterally projecting arms of the carriage by thumbscrews h 7L.
J is a gage-rest attached at its front end by a link t' to a slide j, and is provided at its back end with a longitudinal slot which admits of the gage being adjusted to and from the revolving cutters'. The gage is also provided on its back side and midway of its length with an arm M, which, in connection with the pin K and catch L, governs the lateralmovement of the gage. The pin K is adjusted by changing it from one hole in the table to another.
The catch L is provided with a slot and thumb-screw, by means ofV which it can be adjusted to suit the` desired movement of the gage-rest. v
Projecting from the rear of the table are two slotted ears 7o Zr, upon which the ext-remities of the slotted segment-plates Z l are supported and adjusted by the thumb-screws m m. A bolt o, passing up through the slot in the segment-plates and through the longitudiv nal slot in the back end of the gage-rest, secures it relatively to the cutters and the adjustment of the segment-plates.
In the front end of the gage-rest a stop qis fitted in a slot, and is moved to'and from the cutters by the screw-rod o', which has a thumbhead on its back end.
The operation is as follows: The front of the gage-rest is adjusted by the slide relatively to the size of sash to be dovetailed. The bar is then placed against the pin K, which is also adj usted to suitthc size of sash. Motion being now imparted to the revolving cutters, the stile is placed on the table and against the gage-rest and moved up to the stop q,
which is set according to the depth of the mortise desired to be cut. The gage-rest is nour moved laterally, guided by the slotted plates at one end and its connection by a link With the slide at the other until the mortise is cut to the desired width, when the catch is adj usted to prevent the gage-rest from moving any farther in that direction, and also to set the machine so that the mortises in the sides will be all of the same size. rlhe gage-rest is now moved to its former position and the stile Withdrawn from the cutters finished, when the machine is ready for another. After the stiles are finished the machine is adjusted for cutting the meeting-rails, as follows: The tableis moved laterally7 by means of the screw cl until the shaft upon which it is pivotcd is opposite or in a line with the cutters. The gage-rest is then placed against the pin K and the catch L adjusted so as to hold the gage firmly against the pin. One of the stops is then adjusted so as to allow the table to tilt, to give the proper angle to the tenon. The
meeting-radis now placed against the gage and moved up to the cutters, they cutting their Way clear as the table is tilted.
After one side ot' the tcnon is cut on the meetingrail the gage is moved laterally by the screw t7., to give the desired Width to the tenon, and the table is tilted in the opposite direction to give it the proper angle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new herein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The rocking table H, carriage I, screw (l, adjustable stops n n, and screw f, when combined, arranged, and operating in the manner and for the purpose described.
2. The arrangement of the gage-rest J, provided with an arm N, with the slide j and connecting-link c' at one end and the slotted segment-plate Z l at the other, in connection with the pin K and adjustable catch L, combined and operating in the manner described.
3. The revolving cutters a a, with table H and gage-rest .Lwhen combined, arranged, and operating in the manner and for the purpose described.
