HAND FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,658, dated February 23, 1886.
Application filed October-I, 1885.
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID M. MONROE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Syringes for FireExtinguishing Chemicals, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in chemical fire-extinguishers, wherein the solution is confined ready for use, and, when desired, ejected therefrom by mechanical means, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure -1 is a vertical section through the syringe, showing the solution confined; Fig. 2, a view with a portion of the cylinder broken away, showing the ejection of the solution; Fig. 3, a top ,view of the pistonhead, with a portion broken away; Fig. 4, an inside view of the lower cylinder-head; Fig. 5, an end view of the cylinder, and Fig. 6 a modified view of the sealing device.

The letter A designates the cylinder of the syringe, which I construct of plated sheet metal, in any desiredshape and of a size to be conveniently handled, that it may be quickly used in an emergency. To the ejecting end of the said cylinder I arrange a short nozzle, (1, which may be of any desired length, but preferably short, by which it is not liable to be damaged in handling, 8:0. To the end of the cylinder opposite the nozzle is arranged the stuifing-box 7), consisting of a rubber washer, I), surrounded by a cylindrical sheet-metal ring, I), which is soldered to the head of the cylinder and crimped over the rubber washer, thereby confining the latter in its place and pressing it firmly against the piston-rod; and I also arrange on the inside of this head a relief-valve, c, which is held shut and to its place by the spring a. The object of the said valve is to relieve the vacuum, which is formed when ejecting the solution, by the forward stroke of the piston. In extinguishers of this class, owing to their smallness, it is desirable to utilize all available space with the solution. Therefore I construct the piston-head in such a manner that it forms a valve by which the head is permitted to pass through the solution on its backward stroke and eject the same when moving forward; and it also forms a joint by which the cylinder is sealed, and the solution thereby prevented from escaping until desired.
- The head B is secured to the piston-rodd in any suitable manner, and consists of two plates, e and e, which are constructed of suitable metal that is not chemically acted on by the solution, and in which I arrange a series of holes, f, the positions of which coincide with each other. Between the said plates is placed the flexible packing c, which bears against the interior surface of the cylinder, and which is also provided with holes like thosefin the plates, and their position arranged to coincide therewith, thereby forming the ports for the solution to pass through from one side of the piston-head to the other, as it is drawn backward. On the upper surface of plate 6 is seon red a flexible washer, k, which forms a valve for the ports or holesf, by being secured at its center to the piston-rod d by the nut g, threaded thereon, and free to operateat its periphery, thereby permitting the solution to pass through the holes f in the piston-head when it is drawn backward, but not permitting the same when the head is moved forward, by which the said head is permitted to be drawn back in position to eject the solution, and the same accomplished on the forward movement. The piston-rod (1 extends beyond the nut g sufficiently far to project over the nozzle a when the piston-head is at its full forward stroke, and provided with a thread on which is screwed the thumb-nut h, thereby drawing the piston forward and clamping the washer is firmly between the head B and the end of the cylinder, which seals the same, and efiectually preventing any of the solution from escaping.
The operation is as follows: The cylinder is filled with the desired chemical solution through the relief-valve c, with the pistonhead placed in the position shown in Fig. 1, after which it is ready for shipment and use, the latter being accomplished by unscrewing the nut h and drawing the piston-head back ward by means of the rod (1, which places the solution on the opposite side of the said head to that which it formerly occupied in the position to be ejected, which is accomplished by forcing the piston-head forward, the reliefvalve 0 preventing any formation of a vacuum back of the head, thereby permitting the solution to be quickly and easily ejected at one stroke of the piston. Otherwise, if a vacuum were formed, there would be considerable resistance for the operator to overcome, and some of the solution would be drawn back between the cylinder and piston-packing, which would have to be discharged by an additional stroke of the piston, which would necessarily cause delay, 85c.
As shown in Fig. 6, the sealing device is modified, inasmuch as the nut g is dispensed with, and that portion of the rod that contains the thread is tapered and fitted into the nozzle which forms the seal at that point.
Having described my invention, what I claim and wish to secure by United States Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the cylinder A, the piston-rod d, the plates e and e, the intervening elastic ring 5, the ports or holesf, the flexible washer 7c, and the nuts 9 and h, the former to secure and bind the plates together and the latter to draw the head against the end of the cylinder, as set forth.
2. The combination of the cylinder A, the piston-head B, the piston-rod d, the nut h, arranged to draw the piston-head against the cylinder-head, and the relief-valve c, as hereby set forth.
3. The combination of the cylinder A, the piston-head B, the piston-rod (Z, and the nut h, arranged to draw the piston-head against the head of the cylinder, as and for the purpose specified.
