DANIEL BINGHAM, OF HA\VLEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
CARPET-FASTENER,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,381, dated February 16, 1886.
Application filed November 25, 1885. Serial No. 183,953. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL BINGHAM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Hawley, in the county of \Vayne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a ment applied. Fig. 2 is asectional view.
A represents the wash-board, and A the floor, B referring to the strip which is rigidly secured to the washboard by means of woodscrews b, which pass through the same at suitable intervals. This strip Batits lower front edge is provided witha curved recess, 0, and an angular recess is also provided in the same adjacent to the wash-board, so as to leave an upwardly-projecting portion, 0, which extends Vertically aslight distance beyond the washboard. The strip B is provided at suitable intervals with perforations d, which extend through the portion 0 and extend into the recess 0, and through these perforations d are passed suitable pins or nails, which extend downwardly so as to intersect the grooved recess 0 and enter the floor-boards A.
To secure the carpet to my improved fastening device, the same is stretched upon the floor, the slack being taken up as the carpet is being stretched by any well-known implement, after the carpet has been secured in position by a molding or strip, E,which may be externally of any ornamental configuratiomsaid strip being provided with a recess, 6, which fits over the portion 0 of the strip B, and said molding or covering strip is provided with a downwardly-projecting portion, e,wl1ich enters one of the recesses, while its forward portion has a depending part,E,which lies in front and completely hides the strip B. The strip E is constructed so as to fit snugly over the strip B, and is held in position by frictional contact.
By means of the device herein employed the carpet may be securely attached around a room and the fastening devices will be entirely hid from View, and the strip which covers the fastening devices will prevent the nails or tacks which pass through the carpet becoming displaced, and will form an ornamental margin, which will also serve to keep the furniture away from the wall.
I claim- 1. The fastening device for carpets, consisting of a strip, B, having a horizontal projecting portion provided with vertical perforations, said strip being rigidly attached to the base-board, in combination with a coveringstrip, E, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device for fastening carpets, the strip B, which is rigidly attached to the baseboard, and provided at its lower outer edge with a semicircular recess and at its upper edge with a vertical recess, the lower recess being intersected by the securing'nails, while the upper recess retains in place a coveringstrip, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL BINGHAM.
