UNITED STATES VVARBE R. VAN VLIET, OF EAST PATENT GEEICE.
STROUDSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
WIRE-BENDING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,361, dated February 16, 1886.
Application filed September 28, 1885.
T0 all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that l, WARREN R. VAN VLTET, a citizen of the United States, andaresident of East Stroudsburg, in the county of Monroe and State of Pennsylvania, have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in XVire- Bending Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use t-he same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view o'f a portion of a bench provided with my improved Inachine for bending wi're bails or loops. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the same; and Fig. Sis a similar View taken onli1iexx,Fig.2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.
My invention has relation to machines for bending Wires to form bails used for holding yoke upon fruit-jars, the said yokes confining the lids or covers; and it consists in the improved construction and combination ci' parts of a machine which will bend a U -shaped bail, and for bending` the ends of the said bail into hooks pointing in opposite directions, making awire bail which may be passed under the bottom of a fruit-jar and have the ends of the yoke securing the cover retained by the bent ends of the bail, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a portion of a bench, which has two parallel upright posts, B B, between the upper ends of which a block, C, slides in a rectangular aperture, D, in the top of the table. This aperture is surrounded at its edges by a metallic lining, E, and a rod, F, is removably attached to the under side of the block, and at its lower end the rod is pivoted to a treadle, G, pivoted between the lower ends of the upright posts. A spiral spring, H, is wrapped around this rod, bearing with its upper end against the under side of the block, while its lower end bears against transverse bars I, secured at. their ends between the uprightposts. The upper face of the block, which is slightly Serial No, 179,413, (No model.)
above the face ofthe table when in its raised position, is formed with a groove, J, or recess having one side, K, which is nearest to the operator, or that side to which the treadle v points, beveled, and a U-shaped frame, L, is secured upon the face ofthe block, with its lower side overhanging the groove and covering its upperside. The upper ends of the arms of the U-shaped framehavelongitudinal slots M, in which slide nutted bolts O, having their outer headed ends passing through perforations N in the lower ends of arms l?, the upper portions, Q, of which are twisted at right angles tO their lower perforated portions.
The inner ends of the nutted boltsare passed through the perforated upper arms, R, of a U-shaped bar, S,w hich connects the two nutted bolts and through them the twisted arms,
so Vas to cause them to slide together when adjusted in the slots at the upper ends of the arms of the U-shaped frame.
The wire T is placed with its middle under the horizontal portion of the U-shaped frame in the groove, and as the treadle is depressed the ends of the wire will be bent upward by being forced between the arms of the U- shaped frame and the aperture in the table, and the ends of the wire, as they are bent upward, may be bent in oppositc'directions over the twisted upper ends of the sliding arms upon the upper ends of the U-shaped frame, forming hooks U. In this manner the bails may be formed, which may be placed under the bottom of a fruit-jar with their wide ends; while the hooked ends may be secured to the ends of yokes for holding the covers of the jars in place.
rIhe twisted arms may be adjusted to different heights upon the upper slotted ends of the U-shaped frame by adjusting the nutted bolts in the slots in the said ends, the U -shaped bar serving to raise both twisted arms to the same height in the slots, for the purpose of bending bails of different lengths but of the same width.
Vhere it is desired to make bails of only one length, the twisted arms maybe dispensed with, and bails or staples for other purposes may be made upon this machine by simply placing a straight piece of wire in the groove roo , of the block over the groove, and means for depressing and raising the block, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a machine for making wire bails, the combination of a table having a rectangular aperture and two uprights under the table, a block sliding through the aperture between the uprghts and having a groovein its upper face beveled to one side, and havinga treadle for depressing it and a spring for raising it, a U-shaped frame secured upon the face of the block overhanging the groove and having the upper ends of its arms slotted longitudinally, arms having their upper ends twisted at right angles to their lower portions and having nutted bolts at their lower ends sliding in the slots, and a Ushaped bar having the bolts passing through its ends and connecting the bolts, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IARREN R. VAN VLIET.
