EMORY BOSYVORTH AND JOSEPH SCHMIDT, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
BRANDING IMPLEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,286, dated February 16, 1886.
Application filed July ll, 1885. Serial No. 171,315.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, EMORY BOSW'ORTH and Josnrrr SCHMIDT, both of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Branding Implements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to branding by burning, and has for its object to provide an economical, simple, and efficient device for branding barrels, boxes, or other wooden packages.
Our invention consists of a branding-die adjustably fixed to a lever, and heated by a fixed vapor-burner attached to rear side of the die, said lever arranged in connection with an adjustable barrel, box, or package holder in such a manner that the lever is moved toward the barrel or package to bring the die in contact with the surface to be branded.
Our invention is constructed, combined, and arranged to operate substantially as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation in perspective of our brander, showing the branding-die connected to the supporting and operating lever, the vaporburner, and the barrel resting on its support, all in working order. Fig. 2 is a detached rear view of the lever and branding-die, showing the vapor-burner and the fluid-pipe leading to it for feeding same. Fig. 3 shows a foot-lever for operating the branding-iron.
A is a base for supporting the barrel or package holder, in the top of which is made a longitudinal slot, a, having cross-slots a.
B, is a hollow post or pillar, having a baseplate provided with a rib, which fits and slides in said slot to. It is also provided with a setscrew, 1), to the lower end of which is attached a swiveled cross-bar,which is inserted through one of the cross-slots, by means of which said pillar is clamped or fastened in place.
0 is a forked barrel support, having a shank, c, fitted to slide in said pillar B, and is secured at any desired height therein by means of a set-screw, c, in the side of the pillar. By this means the barrel or package support is made adjustable to any given height or position to accommodate the package to the brander.
(No model.)
D is a bearing-post for the end of the barrel or package to rest against. It is also adjustable, like the pillar B, being provided with a clamping-screw, cl, like b.
To the end of the base A is attached a bracket, E, to which is hinged the lower end of a lever, F. In said lever F, opposite to the end or head of the barrel, is made an oval ring, f.
G is a branding-die attached to a spider, having ears 9, pivoted in the sides of said ring f, so that the (lie may have a tilting or rocking motion.
H is a vapor-burner attached to a shelf, h, at the lower side of the ringf, so as to bring the top of the burner opposite to the center of the back of the die. The burner has a side jet-orifice for the flame to impinge di rectly against the back of thedie. The burner is fed by a stand-pipe, I, leading from a fount, J, located at a suitable height and distance away from the burner for safety. A suitable post, K, for supporting said pipe, is placed adjacent to said lever. In the pipe I is made a swivel-joint, 2', to allow that part of said pipe attached to the burner to turn with the lever when the same is turned in the branding operations. On the said lever F are placed three levers, Z in n, pivoted to lugs thereon. The lower lever, it, works against the upper side of the die G, it being actuated by the lever m, which is operated upon by the lever Z. The object and purpose of said levers are to press the upper side of the die against the sun face to be branded, and thereby make an even impression. In someinstances the surface to be branded is crooked, uneven, or rough, and the lower side of the die coming in contact with the surface first, is liable to burn deeper, while the upper side of the brand is burned shallow, and leaves a faint or uneven impression. By means of these levers a brand may be burned on a rounded surface as well as a flat surface.
From the foregoing the operations of this device will be seen to be as follows: The barrel or package holders being adjusted to the size and proportions of such barrel or package and in position for the branding opera tion, the barrel is placed in the support, as shown in the drawings. Thelever is then moved over and the die brought in contact with the head of the barrel and the brand burned therein. When this is sufificiently burned, the lever is moved back, and the barrel reversed, and the operation is repeated. Thus it will be seen that the branding of both heads of the barrel is very quickly and easily performed.
For boxes or other packages a frame or table may be substituted for the forked barrel- 2. In a branding implement, the combination, with an actuatinglever having a vaporburner secured thereto, and provided with the levers Z m n, of a burning-die pivoted to said actuating-lever in front of and heated by said burner, substantially as described, whereby said branding-die may be'tilted or rocked to press or force the face of the die over the surface of the barrel-head or, package, substantially as set forth.
3. In a branding implement, the base A, having longitudinal slot a, and provided with the horizontally-adjustable post B, having vertically-adjustable barrel or package support 0 and the horizontally-adjustable bearing-post D, and provided with bracket E, in combination with actuating-lever F, pivoted to said bracket E, and provided with branding' die G, heated by burner H, the movements of said lever bringing the die in contact with the head of the barrel, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
