' IMPROVEMENT IN BINDING ATTACHMENTS FOR HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,605 dated October 29, 1861.

Be it known that we, CHARLES P'o'wnas and P. LANCASTER, both of Bronson, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Grain- Binding Attachment for Harvester-s; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a vertical sect-ion of our invention, taken in the line a: :n of Fig. f5; Fig` 2, an endview of the saine, and Fig. 3 a plan or top view of the saine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several ligures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a simple and efficient mechanism for binding grain, the saine being designed for an attachment to harvesters, and to admit, by an easy manipulation, of the grain being cast from the machine in abound state-that isto say, bound properly into sheaves.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and -construct our invention7 we will proceed to describe it.
A represents a platform of a harvester, and a o, a are three uprights attached thereto, for the purpose of supporting the frame-work b of the device. B B represent two toothed wheels of equal size, the shafts c c of which are fitted in the frame-work l). The shaft c of the wheel B has a pinion, d, on it, into which the wheel B gears, and the outer end of the shaft c is provided with a crank or han-V dle, C; and the wheel B gears into a pinion, e, on a shaft, D, which is fitted in t-he framework b, and has a head, E, on its inner end. This head is formed of a' series of plates, f, which are slotted vertically, as shown at g.
E represents an arin, which has a horizontal position, with its inner end bent at right angles to its horizontal part, said inner end being connected by a pivot or joint, h, to an upright, G, on the platform. The arm F has a series of plates, 2, attached to it near its outer end, said plates 'i bein g so disposed or arranged as to fit or pass down between the plates f of head E, when the arm F is raised and drawn over backward in close proximity to the framework b, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2.
At t-he end of the frame-work I), by the side of the shaft D, there is attached a forked plate, H, which receives the end of the arm F when the latter is drawn back, and serves as a guide for it. A spring, Lis attached to the saine end of the frame-work, and is s o bent or curved that the end of arm F, when in the plate or guide I'Lwill rest on said spring, the latter serving to facilitate the removal of the arm from the guide.
J represents a shield, which is formed of a metal plate, having its lower end hinged or connected by jointsj to the platform A. This shield is at the back part of the spot or place on the platform where the grain is received, and it is retained by a link, K, in proper position, said link passing through the inner side plate of the frame-work b, and bent at its end so as to be retained therein, o" prevented from being drawn out therefrom.
To the inner side of the frame-work I) there is attached a horizontal slide, L, which has a cutter, M, at one end, said cutter Working over the face of the head E. The opposite end of the slide L has a spring, N, connected to it, which spring has a tendency to keep the cutter M off or free from the face of the head E. The shank 7c of the cutter M is encompassed by a fork, Z, at the upper end of an upright, m, the lower end of which is connected to a shaft, n, on the platform, which has an upright hand-lever, o, attached to it.
At the inner end of the shaft c of Wheel B there is attached at right angles an arrn,p.
The operation of the machineis as follows: The grain, as it is cut,falls in the platform A, just in front of the shield J, and parallel with it, and upon a string, O, one end of which is attached to a forked plate, i', and the other end fitted in the head E of the shaft D. When a sufficient quantity of grain has fallen onthe platform to forni a gavel,the operator draws up the arm F by means of a cord, a', and the string O is thereby wound around the gavel, the plates t' forcing the end of the string down into the slot g of the head E. The two ends of the string are thus brought in contact, and the arm F being slightly raised, the crank C is turned one-half a revolution, and the ends of the string` thereby twisted, the knife M advancing as the twist progresses, and cutting off the string as the twist is iinished, the knife M being actuated in consequence of the armp acting against the slide L. The bound gavel or sheaf is then cast from the machine, the arm F thrown back with another string, O, oonneeted to it, and the operation is repeated.
Thelever 0 admits of an independent forward movement of the knife M, if at any time required.
Having thus described our iuvention,what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The rotating head E, provided with the slotted plates g, in connection with the swinging or adjustable arm F, provided with the plates z', and the sliding Cutter M, all being arranged and operated in connection with the string O, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In connection with the head E and plates of the arm F, the guide or forked plate H and spring I, as and for the purpose set forth.
