' usefullmprovement in Fire-Escapes, of which the following is a description.

My invention is an improvement in fire-es capes; and it has for an object to provide a fire-escape which, when not in use, may be adjusted entirely within the house out of sight from the street and may be quickly adjusted for use.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter explained.

In the drawings, Figure 1 .is a perspective view of my invention as in use. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section looking down on the fireescape, and Fig. 3is a detail perspective-view of the device, all of which will be described.

The device consists of a main or supporting plate, A, a swinging arm or plate, B, and a pulley, O. I form the plate A so it can be conveniently secured to the framing ofahouse, usually by providing it with holes a for the reception of screws. In use this plate A is secured to the check of a window-frame with one or its outer edge extended to or slightly past the edge of the window-opening. To the said outer edge of plate A is hinged the inner edge of the arm or plate B, usually by means of the pivotbolt D, as shown. This arm B is extended at b a sufficient distance for its outer end to project beyond the outer edge of .a window-sill, as will be understood from Fig. 1. In the outer end of the arm B, I form an opening, E, into which catches the book a of the pulley O. This pulley C may be an ordinary snatch or pulley block, and may be provided with one,two, or more pulleys, as desired.

The operation is simple and will be readily understood on inspection of the drawings.

lVhen not in use,the arm or plate B is folded flat against plate A within the room, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 2. \Vhen desired for use,itis only necessary to raise the window and turn the arm B thereont, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the pulley-block being connected therewith. 1

The rope F-is preferably coated with asbestus to render it fireproof.

It is preferred to use two pulleys and to dispose the ends of the ropes thereover, as shown, to form a seat, f,for the escaping person.who, by grasping the ascending portions of the rope, may regulate his descent.

It will be noticed that the adjustment of the device into or out of operative position ma be effected in a moment.

The device being small and entirelyhidden from view from the outside when not in use in nowise injures the appearance of a building. It can also be furnished at small cost, coming within the reach of all classes.

It is preferred to use a fastening by which to hold the arm B in its outer or operative position. This fastening is shown consisting of an L-shaped button, G, pivoted at g to the window-frame or other support, and having a wing, G, adapted to be turned down over the arm B and secure same, as will be clearly un derstood from Fig. 1. This fastening prevents any movement of the arm B and secures the same rigidly and firmly in place.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A fire-escape consisting of a plate, A, an arm, B, hinged at its inner edge to the plate A,and provided near its outer end with a pulley, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, in a fire-escape, of a plate, A, a plate, B, hinged to plate A, and having an extension, Z), provided near its outer end with an opening, E, and the-pulley-block having a hook engaged in opening E, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with a support, of the arm B, pivotally supported, and a button, G, pivoted to the support and movable into and out of engagement with the arm B, substantiallyas and for the purposes specified.
