EDWAPD 4.. PA??? BY United States Patent 3,358,312 POST PAINTER Edward L. Parr, 301 N. Cuyamaca, El Cajon, Calif. 92020 Filed Dec. 6, 1965, Ser. No. 512,580 6 Claims. (Cl. 230.11)
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Paint applicator of the roller type for painting posts, which applicator includes a rectangularly shaped frame for supporting four paint applying rollers, the frame including four sections which are movable at right angles toward and away from one another for adjusting the Spacing of the rollers with respect to one another.
The present invention relates to a roller type paint applicator and more specifically to a roller type paint applicator for painting a post.
The applicator essentially comprises a frame that includes two portions extending along opposite sides of the post and a hollow member extending from one portion toward the second. A shaft extends from the second portion toward the first portion and is adapted to telescope into the hollow member. Two cylindrical members are disposed on opposite sides of the post and one is rotatably supported on each of the above-mentioned portions of the frame. A hand holding means extends from the frame to facilitate manipulation of the applicator.
Other features and the advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the paint applicator of this invention; and
FIG. 2 is a top view of the applicator shown in FIG. 1, but adjusted to another position.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the applicator 11 preferably includes a frame 13 that extends around the post 15. The frame 13 includes a hollow member 17 that extends along one side of the post 15 and a shaft 19 is adapted to telescope thereinto. A second hollow member 21 is preferably attached perpendicularly to the extending end of the shaft 19. A second shaft 23 telescopes into the hollow member 21 and is afiixed perpendicularly, on its extending end, to a third hollow member 25. A third shaft 27 fits slidably into the hollow member and is attached perpendicularly to a fourth hollow member 29. A fourth shaft 31 telescopes into the hollow member 29 and is attached perpendicularly to the hollow member 17.
In the preferred embodiment, each of the hollow members 17, 21, 25 and 29 includes threaded holes in their walls and set screws 33 are screwed thereinto and are adapted to be urged against the respective shafts 19, 23, 27 and 31. Thus, the frame 11 may be adjusted and the set screws 33 screwed against the shafts 19, 23, 27 and 31 to prevent said shafts from sliding in the respective hollow members 17, 21, 25 and 29 and the frame from coming out of adjustment. Rods 35 preferably angle out from opposite corners of the frame 13 and handle grips 37 are adapted to be fitted thereover to provide a hand holding means to facilitate manipulation of the paint applicator.
Four cylindrically shaped members in the form of rollers 39 are disposed on opposite sides of the post 15. Each of these cylinders is supported such that a portion 41 is spaced inwardly of the frame. Each of said cylin- 3,358,312 Patented Dec. 19, 1967 length and shaped so as to form a shaft 47 extending parallel of the respective hollow members 17, 21, 25 and 29.
The rods 45 are affixed along the hollow members 17, 21, 25 and 29 at a point 50 near the shafts 31, 19, 23 and 27, respectively, but spaced sufficiently inwardly with respect to the inward most surface of the cylindrical member 39 that extends parallel to the respective shafts 31, 19, 27 and 29 to permit said cylindrical member 39 to extend thereby when the applicator 11 is adjusted to paint a relatively small post. This feature is most clearly shown in FIG. 2 where the applicator 11 is depicted as adjusted to paint a relatively small post.
Each of the shafts 47 is of such size that the holes 43 in the rollers 39 receive the same whereby the rollers will be freely rotatable thereon, i.e., the shafts 47 form bearings for the paint applying rollers. The shafts 47 are spaced from the hollow members 17, 21, 25 and 29 such that there is sufficient room for the radius of the cylindrical members 39 to extend therebetween. The extending ends of the shafts are threaded at 49 to permit nuts 51 to be screwed thereon and these nuts serve to retain the cylindrical members 39 on the shafts 43. The other ends of the shafts 43 include ears 53 protruding therefrom to restrain movement of the cylindrical member away from the nuts 51.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the paint applicator 11 of this invention is adapted to fit over a longitudinal post 15 and can be moved longitudinally therealong. By adjusting the frame 13 such that the cylinders 39 are urged against the post 15, four sides of the post can be painted with one pass.
While the form of embodiment herein shown and described, constitutes preferred form, it is to be understood that other forms may be adopted falling within the scope of the claims that follow.
