Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
HENRY DAVIES, OF PORTSMOUTH, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SWINGS.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY DAvIEs, of the city of Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invent-ed a new and Improved Apparatus or Swing for the Purposes of Amusement and Recreation; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of said apparatus or swing, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 a front elevation, and Fig. 3 a plan View.
The same letters of reference refer to the same parts in the different views.
A A A, Figs.Y 1, 2, and 3, is the seat; B B B, Figs. 1 and 2, suspending-rods connected vto the seat Securely in any approved manner and within about eighteen inches of the lower end. These suspending-rods are connected to the roof ot aroom or porch, or to the top of a frame or any suitable place, by means of two brackets, as shown at C O O, Figs. 1 and 2.
D D D, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, is a foot-board or treadle, and is supported by two pieces ot wood E E E E E, which are connected to the bottom end ot' the suspending-rods B B B by a hinge-joint, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 at F F F.
G G G G G, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, are two other vsuspending-rods connected with the treadle or foot-board at the bottom ends and with the roof at the top end at H H H, Figs. 1 and 2, in the same manner as the suspending-rods B B B before referred to, but at a point about six inches back of the point C C C before referred to.
Having described my invention, I will now proceed to describe the operation. It will be seen, in consequence of the rods G G being .l suspended back of the rods B, that when the swing is in the position as shown by the dotted Fig. itbe foot-board or treadle will be up above a right angle with the rods B, and when backyas shown in Fig. 5, the foot-board will be down. rlhe distance the foot-board travels relative to the seat will be the distance from I to J, Figs. 4 and 5. Consequently a person sitting in the seat with the feet pressing on the foot-board the swing will move backward.' Then by holding up the feet the swing will come forward by gravity, and by again pressing on the foot-board the swing will go backward farther than before, and by repeating the operation will swing to any height that may be desired.
It will be seen that the swing may be made ofV any suitable material, and the distances of the suspending-rods from each other may be varied to suit circumstances.
IVhat I claim, therefore, as my invention 1s- The application of a foot-board connected in such a manner to rods or cords suspended either back or in front ot the points C, so as to enable a person to operate the swing while in it.
HENRY DAVIES.
