B. CODDINGTON, OF LEONIDAS TOVNSHIP, ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, AND D. MCCALL, OF KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MICH.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,573, dated October Q9, 186i.
To a/ZZ w/bom/ t may con/cern:
Be it known that we, RICHARDSON Con- DINGTON, of Leonidas township, in the county of St. Joseph, and DoUGAL MGCALL, of the township and county of Kalamazoo, both in the State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plows; and we do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a landside view, and Fig. 3 a reversible share.
The letters of reference are: A, beams with handles attached; B, standard-bolt; C C, cutters; D D, mold-boards, EE, shares. F is the lever that moves the fastener. F2 is the fastener; G, frame-work, and H H false landsides.
The beam and handles are made of wood, and swing each time the plow is adjusted to turn a reverse furrow. The frame-work G is in one piece, is cast-iron, and has a right and a left mold-board, cutter, share, and false landside attached to it by means of bolts. The lettered parts that attach to the frame-work G, except the beam A, may be made of either steel or iron. The standard-bolt B passes through the beam and through the frame-work G, crossing at right angles a line that should extend from one point of the plow to the other.
The reversible shares E are alike. A description of either is a description of the other. Each has two face sides, and each consists of one piece only. One face side is adapted to the right-hand part and the other to the lefthand part ofthe plow-that is, one face side corresponds with the face of the right-hand moldboard 4and the other to the face of the lefthand mold-board; hence when the shares beright-hand portion of the plow, and the share that was on the right-h and portion of the plow is turned over and attached to the left-hand portion of the plow. By thus changing every time the shares become worn, the rounded side is placed above and the least-worn side below, which will make the share perform good work until it is too short for use.
- The fastener consists of a notched slide-plate and spring, and the slide is moved by a lever. It is placed in the back end of the beam, its use being to secure the same as desired at each adjustment of the plow to turn a reverse furrow. The obj ect of this plow is to turn right and left furrows alternately, so that no ridges or ldead furrows need be made.
Ve do not claim, broadly, the combined right and left plow, but
Ve do claim the combination of the parts as follows:
A, beam and handles, B, standard-bolt, C C, cutters; D D, right and left mold-boards; E E, reversible shares; F, fastener; G, framework, and H H false landsides, when arranged and constructed substantially as and for the purpose described.
RICHARDSON CODDINGTON. DOUGAL MGCALL.
